SEASON 33 GOLDEN REEL AWARDS

Welcome to the 33rd Golden Reel Awards ceremony! Tonight we will be celebrating the best Last Resort Films released in Season 33. A full two-thirds of this season's films - 20 of 30 - are nominated tonight for the 14 awards on the line. This season's nominees are led by the Hollywood mystery Splendour, western adaptation The Lone Ranger, and the true crime Night Stalker.

AND NOW FOR THE AWARDS....

Starship Troopers win in its only nominated category, going home one-for-one. The night is also over for the Marvel Universe's The Hammer of Thor: The Frost War, losing in its only chance. Both The Lone Ranger and Lucifer still have more chances at gold later in the ceremony. This is the 6th Best Production Design GRA victory for a film written by John Malone.

We Still Know Where You Live wins a surprise GRA trophy here. The film is just the third Horror film to win this award, following Black Hole in Season 22 and Cat People in Season 4. This is also the second Best Soundtrack GRA trophy for a film written by Jack Brown, following The Crow: Midnight Garden in Season 29.

Like Starship Troopers, Power Rangers will come away with a GRA trophy in its only nominated category. This is the first Most Wanted Sequel GRA win for writer Diane Esposito. While The Lone Ranger and Bashenga: The Black Panther have more chances to win some awards tonight, The Legend of Zelda is now going home empty-handed.

Splendour came into tonight's ceremony with a hefty nine nominations and has managed to win a trophy in its first chance. The film is nominated in every category the rest of the night other than Best Adaptation, Best Villain, and Best Supporting Actress. The Lone Ranger has struck out in three chances so far tonight - but still has five more shots. Broadway Joe is similarly struggling to find gold, missing out in its two chances so far. Supergirl: Power failed to bring in any gold in its only chance. This is surprisingly the first Best Ensemble Cast GRA trophy for a film written by Lon Charles.

Despite many nominations, this is actually Jacob Elordi's first GRA trophy. He's been nominated in the Best Starring Couple category three previous times alone. This is also the first GRA trophy for Amber Midthunder - she was previously nominated in this same category for Pocahontas back in Season 24. While Splendour still has plenty of chances to bring home trophies, Before Love Came to Kill Us and Punch Buggy are down to one each - Best Villain and Best Actress, respectively.

Toby Kebbell wins the Best Villain GRA trophy for his role as Abraham Browning after previously being nominated for the same character back in Season 25. It is his first GRA victory - he has not been nominated for any other performances. Before Love Came to Kill Us is now going home without any hardware. The night is far from over for The Lone Ranger and Night Stalker though.

The Lone Ranger has become the first film tonight to win more than one award, having also won just a few minutes ago in the Best Starring Couple category. Sniper misses out in its one nominated category, while Lucifer will go home after losing out in all three of its nominated categories. This is just the second Best Adaptation trophy for writer Dwight Gallo - out of 17 total nominations.

Splendour now joins The Lone Ranger as a multi-GRA winner this season. Despite several nominations, Broadway Joe and Night Stalker are still without any trophies. This is the 5th Best Original Story GRA for writer Lon Charles - out of 14 total nominations in the category.

Mawar De Jongh wins the Best Supporting Actress GRA trophy for her first role with the studio, beating out veterans. Rise Again will officially go home empty-handed, losing in its only category. After Yumi Kato's Best Actress GRA victory in Season 30, writer/director Meirad Tako has shown he has a knack for pulling Asian actresses out of relative obscurity and bringing them to LRF audiences.

Splendour wins its third award tonight, taking the ceremony lead with three. Wyatt Russell managed to beat out his own co-star Michael Pitt in the category. Wyatt Russell has two previous wins in the Best Ensemble Cast category, but this is his first individual acting GRA victory. Night Stalker is still without a win, although it still has multiple chances left - with nominations in three of the last four categories. Love Is... meanwhile, will officially go home without a win tonight, missing out in all three of its nominated categories.

Splendour wins again - taking home its 4th trophy in the ceremony so far. This is the second GRA trophy for Rebecca Hall after previously winning the Best Supporting Actress GRA in Season 22 for her role in Open Hearts - that season's Best Picture winner. Punch Buggy and Falling on the Cross will be going home without any trophies tonight.

Night Stalker and Danny Ramirez finally win one in the 12th category of the night. Ramirez found himself with two nominations - Best Villain and Best Actor - for his first LRF performance, and goes home winning in one of the categories. Cedar Ridge goes home without a trophy, losing in its one category. Broadway Joe is still without a win and only has one category left - Best Picture. Meanwhile, Night Stalker and Splendour will be nominated in all remaining categories.

Steve McQueen wins his first Best Director GRA with his second nomination, after a previous nod for Mandingos all the way back in Season 9. It is the first win for Bashenga: The Black Panther tonight despite coming into the ceremony with four nominations. This is just the second Best Director GRA win for a superhero film in LRF history - following Michael Bay's win in Season 31 for Justice League War. The night is over for The Lone Ranger as the film will go home with two Golden Reel Awards. The other three films in this category will all face off in the final category of the night.

Splendour is officially the big winner of the season, taking him the Best Picture GRA trophy along with its other four wins tonight. This is just the second Best Picture GRA victory for Lon Charles - his first Best Picture win since Solution in Season 2 - despite 18 previous nominations in the category. Splendour's five wins gives it the second most trophies since Season 30, only eclipsed by The Vintner's six wins last season. Meanwhile, Broadway Joe wound up being the only Best Picture nominee to go home empty-handed tonight.

Congratulations to all the winners! That's a wrap on the 33rd season in the world of Last Resort Films. Stay tuned to the special GRA Edition of The Numbers on September 1st. That will be followed by Most Streamed on September 4th, Top 10 Surprises of Season 33 on September 7th, and this season's History Lesson on September 10th.
