Interview: Dwight Gallo

In this latest edition of Interview, Last Resort Films president Phil Dolan will sit down with Dwight Gallo (The Vintner, The Lone Ranger) to discuss Marvel, Westerns, and other upcoming projects.

PD: Before we start talking about you're latest X-Men project, I know audiences - especially fans of your "Nez Perce" series - are wondering when they can expect another Western project from you.

DG: It might be a bit of a wait, but I do have a couple Western film ideas in the works - with two very different tones and styles. One will take an almost romance approach while the leans more toward horror/thriller elements.

PD: Now that we have the required Western update out of the way, let's talk about X-Men: Age of Apocalypse. Critics and audiences alike have been impressed with how well you've done at managing the large recurring ensemble cast of the franchise. How has that been?

DG: Well Phil, it hasn't always been easy. To keep things simple enough for me, I try to keep with the same core I introduced in the first film - Xavier, Cyclops, Beast, Jean Grey, Kitty Pryde - and expand out from there. And now that we've gone deeper into the stable of villains, I try to make sure at least one hero (sometimes a new one) has a connection with the villain. Once I have that stuff figured out though, the rest comes together pretty easily for me.

PD: Moving on to other Marvel projects, next season you have your third Punisher project due out. Can you give the fans a bit of a tease for it?

DG: Yes, The Punisher: Purgatory should be out next season. I knew right away what Punisher villain O wanted to adapt for the third film - although forming a story that fit the two previous and brought in this new villain proved to be a bit more challenging of a writing process than I had with the first two. I think it turned out well though - very explosive. Originally I planned on just doing a Punisher trilogy, but while writing Purgatory an idea popped into my head for another film so there will definitely be a fourth Punisher film.

PD: What's next for you?

DG: Honestly, a lot of it is Marvel-based. Jimmy Ellis and I have recently finished up writing the sequel to Luke Cage: Power Man, and I have penned a spin-off of X-Men: Age of Apocalypse. Outside of those though, there will be wider variety of films than maybe I'm even known for writing. Over the next handful of seasons, you can expect to see Marvel, a television adaptation, westerns, horror, and even a historical thriller in the vein of Berserker.
