Now Showing: Letters

Letters
Genre: Horror/Supernatural
Director: Niki Caro
Writer: Billy Cruder
Cast: Thomasin McKenzie, Naomi Watts, Marisa Tomei, Ryan Kiera Armstrong, Dacre Montgomery, Nicola Peltz, Dominic West

Plot: The Morrison family is leaving for a wedding. Father Mark (Dominic West) is in the car waiting for the other members of the family. The scene then moves inside the house, the camera shows the pictures and family photos while you hear the voices in the background of Judith (Naomi Watts) and the three children Rob (Dacre Montgomery), Julia (Thomasin McKenzie) and Milly (Ryan Kiera Armstrong) who are finishing getting ready. In the photos there are them and in a couple of old photos there is also Jason, the fourth child, who died about a year of life from a very serious heart malformation eight years earlier. The door closes and the fours join Mark in the car who is singing the Kiss song "I was made for lovin 'you". Julia and Judith laugh and listen to Mark singing out of tune. The car then starts, the journey should last a few hours. The journey seems to be going well with a peaceful and pleasant family atmosphere. At some point, after a bend, the car is faced with a deer that is crossing the road. Mark manages to dodge the animal but crashes violently and the car overturns and ends up on a large tree. The accident is terrible and the car is completely destroyed.Judith calls by name the children who all respond with difficulty and rather aching. Then she turns to her husband and realizes he's dead and starts crying. After six difficult months the family decided to move house and move to a beautiful large house located in what was once a rural area near New Orleans. Obviously the area is now more developed and more like a great suburb.Judith had decided to move because of too many memories and wanted to start her life all over again. Arrived in the new house, Julia and Milly are surprised and happy because the house seems to be spacious and very interesting. Rob instead was rather reluctant to move there because he was more distant from his girlfriend Meghan (Nicola Peltz) and could have seen her less. Judith had bought the house at a very advantageous price, the old owner had died and the relatives of it had decided to sell it also at a rather low price. As they began to arrange the boxes, Judith shows her children the various rooms. The room of the old owner, Mrs. Maggie Lawson, where she had died while sleeping, remained empty. They felt a little uncomfortable when they entered there and left it as it was and decided to use it as a guest room in case any relative had decided to spend the night there. They soon made the acquaintance of their neighbor, Leah Thompson (Marisa Tomei) who helps the family to settle down by advising her and giving information on nearby places. The woman turns out to be very kind and Judith is very happy to have found someone with whom to also establish a friendship. Judith and Leah spent a lot of time together, especially on the weekend. Both had lost a loved one in fact Leah was Maggie's best friend and they were almost inseparable. This friendship made Julia happy because she hadn't seen her mother having carefree and peaceful moments for a long time, even though in the evening when she went to sleep she often heard her cry. Milly was often busy with her toys while Rob was often away from home busy with work, basketball and Meghan. One evening Leah was invited to dinner. The evening continues pleasant among inviting dishes and good wine. At one point when Milly went to sleep and Julia was going upstairs to get ready Leah started talking about the voodoo and curiously Julia went back to listening. Leah said that in New Orleans it is a widely used practice and the knowledge had been passed down to her by her parents and grandparents. He said it was white voodoo with small spells that were meant to bring luck and protection. He also said that it was possible to talk to the dead by writing letters and putting them in a special place where these spirits could read them. Judith was amused by these stories even though she was obviously skeptical while Julia was very intrigued even though she also thought it was almost a fairy tale. The same night we see Julia who wakes up fully seated after having had a nightmare where she relives the accident six months earlier. Julia often has nightmares and therefore often spends moments of the night looking out the window thinking or looking for something interesting. At one point he sees Leah approaching her house and putting something in the mailbox. Julia thought it was a strange thing but then thought that maybe she could have left a message to communicate something to them for the next day. Julia had started to become attached to Leah but she also realized that sometimes she had bizarre attitudes. At the first light of dawn, while everyone was sleeping, she went to check and saw that the mailbox was empty. The same thing was repeated the following night and even in that case in the morning there was nothing inside the mailbox. At this point the third night, driven by curiosity, decided not to sleep because he wanted to better understand the situation. The girl put on the headphones with loud music and started to check the window. At 2.30 he saw that Leah is approaching something in the mailbox.

The girl quickly ran down the stairs and as soon as Leah entered her house she rushed to open the mailbox. She found a letter addressed to Maggie. At this point Julia has a surprised face, Maggie was the old owner of the house where she lives now. For a moment he wanted to open it and read it but put it back in its place and went back to her room. The girl never slept that night, she began to travel with the imagination and to think of the father because despite the fact that it was absurd maybe it was really possible to start with the deceased people as Leah had said. Towards morning, the girl exhausted from thoughts, fell asleep for about an hour where she dreamed of her father, this time with a serene and welcoming face. Julia wakes up and runs down the stairs, kisses the mother who is preparing breakfast and goes to the mailbox to find it empty. Julia was quite excited, which meant that it was probably true that there was a way to talk to the deceased. She really wanted to resent her father Mark, she really felt a lot of nostalgia for him. Julia went upstairs and looked under her bed, there was a box inside which there were photographs and objects that reminded her of her father, every so often she took it out and remembered past events. Julia spent the day thinking and Judith realized there was something strange about her daughter but Julia says it was just a little melancholy. In the evening the girl is convinced and decides to try to write a letter to her father. The girl takes a sheet and begins to write. She had to make several attempts, didn't know what to write and felt a little silly to do such a thing. After throwing several sheets on the ground she manages to have the correct inspiration on what to write. At the end she wrote that he missed her very much, he tells her about the new house and how her brothers and mother are doing. it is very difficult to wake up in the morning and not to hear her singing in the shower. And in the end she asks how she is in the afterlife. She puts the letter in the box and puts it under the bed. Unlike the other nights Julia fell asleep immediately and had no nightmares. When she woke up she looked inside the box and the letter was gone. Julia didn't know what to do, she was excited and confused at the same time. She went to the bathroom to wash her face. The door was closed and she thought her brother was taking a shower. She heard him singing loudly in the shower, which was unusual enough for him. Then the girl laughed alone thinking that maybe her brother had spent the night with Meghan and was happier than usual. A few minutes passed and she started knocking on the door telling her to hurry. As the song continued she jumped because she heard a blow on her shoulder. She turns around and it's her brother Rob. He asks what's going on and she says she thought she was in the bathroom and that someone was singing. He says he hasn't heard anything and that he would have opened the door. He opened the door without problems and they entered the bathroom. Julia was amazed to see that the bathroom was empty, there was no song and the water from the shower did not flow. At this point Rob stroked his sister's head and left the room. She took a few steps forward and saw that the shower floor was still wet. Something strange was happening. Suddenly a rustle behind her made her frightened. She turns abruptly and sees that words were slowly appearing in the misted mirror. "How much do you miss me?" Was written. Julia was a mixture of fear and ecstasy. Then Judith arrived in the bathroom to get an object and the writing disappeared immediately. In the evening the girl decides to write another letter to reply to the message on the mirror. She wrote a long letter focused on how much she missed him and finally asks again how he is in the afterlife. Finally she put the letter back in the box. , when she opened her eyes she checked the box and the letter was gone. Then he saw that near the door there was a sheet of paper with few words. It said "What more do you want from me?". Julia found the message a little strange and immediately decided to write a reply. She wrote that she wanted him to come back to have fun with her again, to play with the model cars he loved to collect or to play cards to recreate those tournaments with which they spent hours in the past. Then Julia and her sister Milly left the house to run errands and shop. The two said goodbye to Leah who was in the garden pruning roses. On the way, Julia asked Milly if she had anything to ask her father. Milly did not understand the question and was sad. Julia realized that she had made a mistake and apologized. Then she offered her sister an ice cream and Milly returned a smile.

When they got home, Julia went to her room and was amazed to find some of Mark's model cars placed in the floor as if she wanted to recreate a race. The strange thing was that they had to be in the attic a track that her father had built to play in a more realistic way. Julia didn't know what to do or say aside from saying "Dad" aloud as a tear fell from her eyes. Then she realized that next to a model there was a ticket that simply read "Play with me". Julia stopped, did not feel in danger but had a feeling of unease within her. After she knelt on the ground and started moving a toy car for a few moments his cell phone rang suddenly. It was Leah who said he had prepared vegetables for Judith, who was at the office at work at the time. Julia got up and took another look at the cars, for a moment she thought she saw one moving but she thought it was a joke of her imagination. She went to Leah together with Milly. Leah was on the porch on his rocking chair in the company of Rufus, his cat with a bag with aubergines and carrots inside. Julia thanked her and took a few steps to go home but then went back. He sent Milly to play with Rufus and then with difficulty told Leah that she knew about the letters she wrote to Maggie. know how much it was missing..and how much Rufus lacked the tuna delicacies it prepared. Leah asked if Julia also intended to attempt this custom. Julia decided not to say that she had already written letters, rather she said that she didn't know if she would ever do it. Leah smiled and asked to keep her updated. The two said goodbye while Milly stayed with Leah to play with the cat. She said she would bring her home after a while. Julia intanta began to walk immersed in his thoughts until he realized that it was late and returned home. Judith had already returned home and scolded her daughter for not having answered the calls and was worried. He also said that he had found the cars and the track in his room. Julia tried to justify herself by saying that she had taken it to look at it. Then Judith scolded her that you have to take care of things, the cars were scratched and one was missing two wheels. Julia was quite confused because everything was in perfect condition when she left the house. During dinner she didn't say a word. After washing the dishes and greeting everyone, the girl went anxiously to her room. As soon as she entered, she looked at the room and immediately closed the door. His heart was beating fast, the situation was not as he had seen his mother, it was much worse. The track was completely torn to pieces and the remains of the cars were scattered throughout the room. She could not understand what had happened and began to try to readjust the various broken objects in the best possible way while crying. At one point, around midnight, Milly had also joined her, who had arrived because she had gone to drink a glass of water and had seen the light of Julia's room turned on and had gone to browse. But after a few minutes Milly fell asleep and Julia picked her up and put her back in her bed. At that point Julia noticed a letter near the desk. The message was "" WHY WON'T YOU PLAY WITH ME ?? ". At that moment she felt almost a sense of anger that could be felt in the room, but the anger was not that of Julia. She tried to rationalize saying it was suggestion but the feeling she felt at that moment was really strange. But Julia felt guilty for making her father angry like that. She decided to write a new letter trying to remedy the situation and prevent it from happening again. So she decided to write her last letter to her father: "Daddy, I'm so sorry for not playing with you. I love you, but I think we need to let go. You belong on the other side and I belong here. I just want to say one more thing to you. Something I never got the chance to say before: Goodbye Daddy. ". Then she went over to Milly and fell asleep. The next morning is Saturday and we see Rob together with Meghan who are leaving for a weekend together and greeting the two sisters and Judith. Julia did not feel very comfortable spending much time at her house that day and went to Leah.Julia did not even check inside the box if there was a new letter.Leah she was sitting with Rufus, as usual, and both were looking at the birds hopping in their yard, Rufus more careful than Miss Leah. The woman immediately asked how it had gone the previous evening.

The woman was referring to the letter imagining that Julia would write to her father. Julia thought Leah could help her in some way despite not being aware of the disturbing events. Leah, however, before Julia started talking, said "Let me guess, it didn't work." "Because I know better than anyone else that spirits can't move physical objects. I have to use my special charm paper to write to Maggie, and I doubt you got any charm paper. ". Julia was uncomfortable with this revelation. She went on about all the things she's told Maggie. She said it didn't happen often, as it was hard for Maggie's frail little spirit to do much of anything except read, but Maggie would sometimes write back. Maggie said she hadn't crossed over yet, but when she did cross over, she wouldn't be able to get letters anymore. Maggie said that she loved Miss Leah and her letters, but one day, she'd need to move one. She said eventually, Miss Leah wouldn't have the strength to write letters and they would become fewer and fewer. Once Maggie knew it was too hard for Miss Leah to write anymore, she'd cross over and wait patiently with Petunia, another one of Miss Leah's cats who had passed away. Maggie said Miss Leah would know when she crossed over because her letters would stay in the mailbox, and no one would take them.

Julia wandered home later that afternoon wondering if her dad was ever going to cross over. She went into her room and thought about all the events that had happened, she didn't want her father to be angry with her. She decided to look inside the box under the bed. The letter written the previous night had disappeared but in its place there was a new one with the name Julia written on the envelope. Julia opened it with fear to read the contents. Inside there was a few disturbing words "DADDY ISN'T HERE". She bolted down the stairs and prepared to run back to Leah’s and explain everything. Leah's voice was in the kitchen and she was laughing with Judith. The girl started walking toward them, but there was something on the other side of the division between the kitchen and living room, where I could still see it but Mom and Miss Leah couldn 't. We put a framed picture of Dad there in order to remember him. There was a note on the picture. It said, "SAY A WORD AND THEY'RE DEAD". Julia didn't know what to do and that night she secretly went out and went to Leah. The woman was writing a new letter to Maggie on her special charm paper. It was very thin, and glowed a silvery hue. Then they went to Julia's house together and put the letter in the mailbox.

The next day Judith and Julia were going on some errands and stopped at the mailbox because someone had raised the lever. There was a ticket for Leah there. Judith knew nothing and therefore thought that someone had left him in the wrong place and sent her daughter to take him to Leah. Julia ran down the street to Miss Leah. The woman opened the letter and began to read while Julia was sitting and stroking Rufus. When he was done, Leah's face turned pale. All the color was gone from her face and she was shaking. She was clearly disturbed. In a trembling voice she said not to go home, that she would call Judith and invite everyone to her. She immediately put the letter down and picked up the phone. Once she turned her back, Julia took the letter to read it. Initially Maggie apologized for not having had the strength to write in the last few days and then made comments about the family who had moved to her house. Maggie wrote that Judith is an adorable woman and she really looks like a good friend and that it's really nice to see the two women laughing in the kitchen like Maggie and Leah did in the past, then the letter goes on to say that Rob is a strong guy who takes care of the younger sisters, Milly a very sweet girl and finally Julia a lively and very curious girl. Finally the letter ends by saying that she regrets that there is also a fourth brother, Jason, with the black eyes and the long, dark claws. It's always causing a ruckus. He looks at poor Julia as she sleeps and leaves horrible little notes around at home and often enjoys playing with knives in the kitchen while people in the house sleep. Meanwhile Leah's screams had increased, someone had answered the phone but there were only whispers, faintly and malicious laughter. The woman called 911. Julia meanwhile was petrified and was holding the letter in her hands. At one point she sprang and ran home. The door was open and she began to walk around the house where he found so much blood and the corpses of her mother and little sister horribly mutilated with knife wounds. Shortly thereafter Leah also arrived who found Julia who was leaving almost in shock. A few seconds later the police arrived. Julia and Leah were in the garden and looked up at Julia's bedroom window. Standing there, in the room where I slept at night, was a black eyed child with an evil grin that stretched ear to ear. It raised one long, sharp finger….probably 12 inches long, to it’s mouth as if to say “shhhhhhh…”

Reaction: Boasting an expensive ensemble cast, The Driftwood Populace was going to need a solid showing and strong word of mouth to reach the profit point, which it obviously came well short of.

"Now I for one, I do like Wes Anderson films but, after The French Dispatch, I was beginning to grow tired of his shtick. Now with The Driftwood Populace, I'm stuck between liking the new and disliking the old of Anderson's style. The cast are the standouts as each deliver on every performance/scene. A Best Ensemble Cast contender to beat." - Dale Rennoll, New York Sun

"The Driftwood Populace manages to capture Wes Anderson's trademark tone for the most part, but story just wasn't up to snuff after the midway point. The script by Jimmy Ellis created all these fun characters, but it felt like by the end that he didn't exactly know what to do with them all." - Samuel O'Brien, Sight and Sound Magazine

"Moderately less pretentious than Wes Anderson's last couple efforts, The Driftwood Populace is led by two strong performances from Saoirse Ronan and Helen Mirren. Some of the film's quirky touches were welcome, but the frequent narration and massive array of oddball supporting characters did overwhelm me at times." - Mark Rawls, Seattle Times

Rated R for language and sexual content

Plot:
CHAPTER I – WHAT COMES NEXT
Narrator (Bill Murray): (Whenever the narrator speaks, it is shown on screen.) “It's a morning like any other for Cordelia Green (Saiorse Ronan). She lives with her boyfriend of 4 years Hubert Glover (Jason Schwartzmann). With her nursing dress, apron and cap, all the perfect shade of white she is ready for another day of work.”

Cordelia kisses Hubert on the cheek and wishes him a happy birthday, as she leaves for the hospital. She had asked for a half day today to surprise Hubert for his birthday. Arriving at wok Cordelia is greeted by an outgoing nurse, Miss Jourdain Michel (Lea Seydoux). The two politely curtsy one another before walking by. Jourdain looks back to the smiling Cordelia in disgust.

“Cordelia’s day goes swimmingly. Nothing out of the ordinary. That is until she speaks with the chief nurse, Cassandra Bonnet (Frances McDormand).”

Cassandra calls Cordelia into an office to talk with her. She tells her that she is one of the best nurses she has, and that she does this out of love. Cassandra tells her that her aunt has had a terrible fall and will need constant care. She adds that she lives out near the ocean (a four-hour drive from where they are currently). She tells her that she cannot leave her position as head nurse and asks whether Cordelia would be interested in the job of caring for her aunt. Cordelia asks whether she can take a bit of time to think about it. Cassandra tells her that she needs to know by the morning.

“And with that Cordelia had just been offered a life changing proposition. As she drove home she canvassed the landscape and wondered of the ocean, and the waves crashing down. However, it wasn’t long before she arrived back home once more, with a stranger’s car in her driveway.”

Cordelia proceeds to the entrance of her house with caution. As she opens the door ever so slightly some moans and screams can be heard from the bedroom. She tiptoes through the house careful not to make a noise and pokes her head through. She covers her mouth in shock and tears begin to well. She just sits there, outside her bedroom door while Hubert makes love to another woman.

“This went on for another 30 minutes, can you believe that?!”

Hubert and the woman finally finish. The woman tells him she needs to wee. She gets up and walks through the doorway, stopping as she sees Cordelia. Cordelia looks up to see Jourdain Michel, her co-worker. Jourdain runs back into the bedroom and puts on her clothes. Cordelia enters and begins packing her bags. Hubert tries to reason with her as she does. Jourdain runs out of the door, Hubert yelling after her as she goes. Cordelia snaps back at Hubert asking how long, to which he has no reply. She tells him she is leaving. He questions where she will go and she tells him she was offered a job on the beach.

Cordelia storms out of the house and immediately drives back to the hospital to speak with Cassandra. Cordelia tells her that she accepts. Cassandra tells her she has tomorrow off and will accompany her to meet her aunt. Cordelia thanks her and leaves. Now she needs a place to stay for the evening. She drives to a hotel nearby. Not to fancy and not to cheap, she places the room on Hubert’s credit card, and enters the room. Upon entry she is enamoured by a painting in the room of the sea. As she stares at this painting, we zoom in.

CHAPTER II – A NEW BEGINNING

“Cassandra and Cordelia arrive at the seaside town of Driftwood. Not the most flamboyant of seaside town’s in its sights, but it carries more of a … rustic old timey feel. As the two stand at the doorstep of Cassandra’s aunt’s, Cassandra wishes her luck, and tells her not to listen to any of the family’s nonsense.”

The two women approach the house. As they get closer Cordelia realises that the house has been built into an old lighthouse. She questions this and Cassandra says that the lighthouse has been out of order for 40 years now. She says that her Aunt Jolie and her uncle Grayson, God rest his soul, had bought the lighthouse over 30 years ago and had the interior converted to a home.

Cassandra knocks, and the door is opened by her cousin, Beatrice Supont (Tilda Swinton). Beatrice greets her with distain but welcomes them inside. Inside the house is Beatrice’s sister, Vicki Supont (Jodie Foster), who greets Cassandra kindlier than her sister did. Cassandra introduces the two of them to Cordelia, before asking where her aunt Jolie is. They take her into the bedroom where Jolie (Helen Mirren) sleeps. They all close the door to not bother her. Vicki offers tea to the guests, and begins to pour it.

Cassandra takes Cordelia around the house, a large spiral staircase is the only way to reach other rooms. On the lowest floor is Jolie’s room, a toilet and the kitchen. The next floor is the spare bedroom, it is odd as all the floors other than the lowest is their own room, and all are circular, to encompass the staircase. The room is messy but Cassandra says she will take care of it. They go up again to the bathroom, everything is crammed in, close together. There are another two generic household floors, then comes the last floor. The one that holds the light of the lighthouse. Cassandra tells her that the only person that can enter there is Jolie herself, there has been no-one else enter and no-one knows why. She adds that she keeps a key around her neck. Cordelia looks at the door intrigued. Vicki runs up the stairs and tells them that the tea is ready. They all walk down the spiralling staircase back to the lower floor.

“As the time ticked on by, the sisters asked Cordelia questions about herself, how she was brought up, why she wants to be a carer, what was her previous job. But one question really stumped her … Is she ready?"

Jolie opens her bedroom door, Vicki rushes to be by her side, to which she immediately tells her she doesn’t need help, it was a small fall. Beatrice speaks up reminding her that she broke her arm and just had rehab on her hip, she also adds that she has guests. Jolie looks at her niece and tells her to come over and hug her. She tells her that she looks just like her mother. She then looks to Cordelia and asks who she is. Vicki tells her she is her new carer. Jolie shakes her head and says she doesn’t want one. Cassandra just tells her to think of her as a roommate that does all the housework and takes care of her.

“The four women just and talk for hours. Cordelia mostly stays out of the talking, briefly ducking away to make some more tea. Evidently she makes it just the way Jolie loves it so that’s a plus. As the sun begins to set, Beatrice and Vicki leave, with Cassandra following close by, leaving Cordelia and Jolie alone.”

Beatrice and Vicki stand outside the front door. Beatrice snaps at Vicki telling her that they didn’t want their mother to have a carer. They want the house sold. The more money they get the better.

Cordelia tells Jolie that it’s getting pretty late and that they should be heading to bed soon. Jolie looks at her and says she wants to make one thing clear, she does not and will not take orders from anybody. Cordelia understands, and rephrases her sentence instead asking Jolie if she would like to go to bed. Jolie smiles and says that it is about that time. Cordelia help her into her bed before leaving her to sleep the night.

Cordelia enters the spare room, that Cassandra had cleaned up for her. The room is small and cosy, as are all the rooms in the house. She lays on the bed with her hands on her head.

“After a long couple of days, Cordelia had been able to rest somewhat peacefully that night, however tomorrow is yet another day of unknowns.”

CHAPTER III – GRAYSON

(All Flashbacks are in Black and White, underlined and italics)

A younger 20 something year old Jolie rides her bicycle through the small streets of Driftwood. As she rides, she says hello to many people, all the locals seem to love her. She does not keep her eyes forward however and runs into a young man, roughly the same age. The two of them apologise as they get up off the ground. Grayson helps her pick up the bike, Jolie blushes and they introduce themselves.

Jolie narration: “After a few months of dating, Grayson asked my father for his blessing for our marriage. He accepted and we had a small wedding. The two of us moved into a small cottage and not long after, I was pregnant with Beatrice. The three of us lived in that house until Vicki was born. The girls grew up there and that was our home for 26 years.”

26 years later: Jolie (Michelle Williams) and Grayson (Owen Wilson) stand out the front of their little cottage they loved for so many years. The screen shifts and the two are standing in front of the lighthouse with Jolie blindfolded. Grayson takes the blindfold off and she is amazed, she loves it. Grayson and Jolie immediately run around the lighthouse and look at the rooms. They enter the lightroom and can see everything. The whole town is visible. She can see dogs and children run on the streets. Jolie smiles wide.

Grayson Supont stands on a stage and is announced the new mayor of Driftwood, a lot of people in the town are in attendance. After he steps down from the stage he is greeted by Jolie. He asks her if she would like to have a romantic dinner in the lighthouse. She nods and they go back home.

Grayson takes her up to the light room. An elegant dinner is set up, looking over the whole town.

After dinner Grayson reveals one last thing. He unveils a telescope, he gifts this to Jolie and tells her that she can use this when he is not home to look at him in his office, so they are never apart. Jolie smiles and the two kiss and hug.

Jolie and Cordelia sit at the table and drink some tea. Jolie then says that, that is the key around her neck, it’s for the lightroom that Grayson and her stayed in for hours a time.

“As the days pass by Jolie becomes more accustomed to the care and Cordelia becomes more intrigued about the light room. She wonders aloud in her room what could the old woman possibly be hiding.”

Cordelia asks Jolie what it is in the light room that is so enchanting. Jolie smiles and tells her that she will take her up there tomorrow morning bright and early. But for now, they need to go into town for some groceries.

“Cordelia helped Jolie into her car and they drove to the town centre. The two go from shop to shop grabbing all of the essentials that they need. While at the checkout of the grocer, a young man, Aurick (Craig Roberts) approaches them.”

Aurick stutters his words and asks Cordelia if she is new in town, she tells him she is. He proceeds to ask her for her name, the two of them introduce themselves. Jolie is finished with the shopping and demand they leave. Cordelia apologises to Aurick but says that she must go. Cordelia asks the limping Jolie where they should go now, she tells her that she would like to go stand on the beach. Cordelia says that she doesn’t think that wise due to her hip. Jolie just tells her that she wants to go on the beach. Cordelia succumbs to the pressure and tells her she will find another way.

Cordelia drives her car onto the sand, with her windows down. Jolie smiles as the wind hits her face. Cordelia stops the car as close as she can to the water without it touching. Jolie steps out of the vehicle and Cordelia helps her to sit down. They sit beside each other for a moment in silence. Jolie tells her that Grayson used to love the beach, even in the winter he would come down for a swim. A police officer approaches the two of them and introduces himself to Cordelia, as Officer Weber (Jeremy Davies). Weber tells Cordelia that she cannot be driving on this beach. Weber begins writing her a ticket. Jolie hears this and speaks up, she stands and slowly walks to the officer. Weber looks to her and immediately stops writing the ticket. He addresses her as Ms Supont and puts the pen back in his pocket. He asks if she is with Cordelia and she nods. She says Cordelia is her carer, she adds that she went for a walk by herself onto the beach and the only way she would go home is if the car was brought down. She apologises to Weber who says it’s ok but tells her not to do it again. Weber heads off and Cordelia turns to Jolie asking what just happened. Jolie just looks to Cordelia and smiles, getting back in the car.

CHAPTER IV – MISSING PIECES

“And so it was, the day that Jolie shared the room with Cordelia. The room that meant so much to her not even her children entered.”

Cordelia and Jolie stand outside the door of the lightroom. Jolie takes the key from her neck and unlocks the door. As the door swings open, it is evident that the room hadn’t been upkept for years. The two walk inside with dust everywhere and spider webs near the light in the middle of the room. They walk to the window, that overlooks the town, the only clean part of the room. Jolie tells Cordelia that she comes here to look over the people of Driftwood. She takes the cloth off the telescope and tells her what it means to her. It is one of the last things Grayson had left her other than the house. She looks through the telescope and points out the mayor’s office. The mayor, Frederick Stainton (Jeff Goldblum) sits in his office chair as seen through the telescope. Jolie tells Cordelia to have a look through the telescope and see what she can find. Cordelia steps up to the telescope and tells her she sees children laughing and dogs barking, she sees the townsfolk all getting along. She then sees the young man from the grocer, Aurick Stainton walking on the street. She follows him with the binoculars until he enters the library.

After a little time of talking in the lightroom, it is evident Jolie was becoming a bit sad. Cordelia suggests that they leave the room and perhaps Jolie take a nap. She helps her down the stairs and into bed. Cordelia also asks if she can go to the local library to get some books. Jolie nods but tells her to be quick, and to be careful of the librarian, Cyneley Brown. Just before she leaves Cordelia admires some jewellery that is showcased in the kitchen, she wishes to own some like that herself one day.

Cordelia arrives at the library, she begins looking at the books but does not recognise any of the books names. She approaches the counter and is greeted by Cyneley Brown (Luke Wilson). She asks him about the library having any Dickens books. Brown looks at her with an odd expression. She then asks about Hemingway, he is stumped, he had never heard of any of them. Cyneley asks her for her library card, of which she does not own. He tells her that she cannot borrow a book today, unfortunately the library is not accepting any new members at this time. She looks to him oddly. She is tapped on the shoulder by Aurick, he asks if she would like to walk. The two walk the streets and get to talking. We end up finding out that Aurick’s father is the mayor, but that he doesn’t want to follow him. He tells her that he is actually an aspiring artist, as of right now though he is working three different jobs. After a while talking, Cordelia realises the time and tells Aurick she must rush back to Jolie. She thanks him with a hug, before turning and running back to the lighthouse. Aurick stands happy with himself.

Cordelia arrives back in time just before Jolie wakes up. She makes tea and sits it down on the kitchen bench. She doubles back however as she notices some of Jolie’s jewellery missing. She begins panicking and looks all over for it. It is nowhere in sight. Jolie calls out for her and she goes in to help her to the chair. They talk over the tea, Cordelia asks about the jewellery, it is Jolie’s collection that she has gained over the years, most of it being from Grayson. Cordelia tells her that she believes some of it was stolen but tells her not to be alarmed, she will take care of it. Jolie shocked that somebody from Driftwood would do such a thing.

“That very night, as Jolie slept, Cordelia went into town to the security office. Working that late shift was none other than Aurick Stainton.”

Aurick awkwardly flirts with her, however Cordelia is there for business, she believes there has been a robbery, but Jolie has told her not to involve the police. All she wants is a camera set up near her jewellery.

CHAPTER V – THE BOARD

“The very next morning, Aurick was excited to see Cordelia once more. His father excited too. What came next nobody expected.”

Aurick arrives at the lighthouse with all the tools to install the camera. Cordelia meets him at the door and brings him inside. Jolie stands and hugs Aurick as she has met him before. She asks how his father is. Aurick says that he is here, he wanted to come and visit her. Frederick enters and walks to Jolie, he grabs her hand and kisses it. She invites him to sit and the two get to talking. Aurick and Cordelia talk about life as well. Cordelia explains that she would love to see some of his paintings. Aurick smiles and says that he will show her one day. They continue talking while Aurick installs the camera. Aurick finishes the set up and walks quickly to tell his father. Frederick stands and kisses Jolie on the cheek, as he walks away, he turns back and reminds her that the board are having a meeting tonight. She is quick to say she remembers, and she’ll be there. Aurick stands opposite Cordelia, he sticks out a hand to shake as she goes for a hug. It is awkward but Aurick changes it up and the two hug. Frederick and Aurick then leave, oddly shuffling away.

Jolie calls Cordelia over and tells her that Aurick reminds her a bit of Grayson. He seems like a good person. Cordelia nods and begins to ask about the board. Jolie tells her she has met some of them and that she will meet the rest tonight.

That night Jolie and Cordelia arrive at the Mayor’s office, all the board are already in attendance. Cordelia takes Jolie to her seat and stands by her side.

“The seating arrangement. At the head of the table is Frederick Stainton, mayor of Driftwood, to his left Officer Weber, his left Cyneley Brown, and on his left at the other end of the table is Jolie Supont. Now for the other side of the table, to Miss Supont’s left, the town’s head nurse Vicki Supont, and the final person is school principle George Erigalou (Bob Balaban). The meeting commences.”

Frederick starts the proceedings by talking about the news surrounding Driftwood, Jolie’s seeming burglary. Jolie tells them to not worry about that it is a simple cat burglar. She introduces Cordelia to the table and they all nod to her. George questions her presence at the meeting, to which Jolie comes to her defence. Cordelia says that it is fine and that she will wait outside. She bids farewell to all members.

Cordelia sits outside twiddling her thumbs. Aurick sees her and walks toward her. He asks her if she would like to see some of his paintings. She looks inside at the board and Aurick says they still have another hour until they finish. Cordelia nods and the two run off together in slow motion.

As they reach Aurick’s house, Cordelia’s name is called out. She turns to see Hubert behind her. He runs up to her and begs her for forgiveness. Aurick asks if he is bothering her, Hubert perks up, Aurick tells him to leave her alone. Hubert punches him in the face. Cordelia is shocked and punches Hubert in the face. She helps Aurick up and goes inside. Hubert crawls inside after them. Cordelia and Hubert stop and just stare at the painting. They are lost in it. A painting of Cordelia. Aurick says he wanted to give her this but didn’t know how to. Cordelia tells him she loves it. Hubert hangs his head as he knows his chance is over. Cordelia and Aurick sit and stare at the painting, her head on his shoulders.

The Board meeting finishes. Jolie sees that Cordelia is not there, she invites all the members of the board back to the lighthouse. They all accept, and Frederick offers to drive Jolie.

Aurick checks the time on his watch. He says the meeting is over and that his father more than likely took Jolie home. He says they should go back to the lighthouse.

Cordelia and Aurick arrive at the home first. The door is unlocked however. Standing in the middle of the kitchen is Beatrice, she holds the remainder of her mother’s jewellery. Cassandra is there trying to stop her. Beatrice drops the jewellery when she sees Cordelia. Cordelia stands in front of her and punches Beatrice in the face. Vicki runs in as she arrived out of the board first, she tells Cordelia she can’t punch her sister and punches Cordelia. Cassandra says she can’t punch her nurse and punches Vicki. The jewellery is scattered all over the ground. At this moment the rest of the board enters the house. Cordelia holding her eye says she found the burglar, Beatrice. Officer Weber walks over and arrests Beatrice. Jolie looks on with sadness. Beatrice is taken away in slow motion.

Aurick and Cordelia look at the VHS recordings of the cameras, that indeed proves that Beatrice was the burglar, the two look to each other and share a brief, almost awkward kiss.

CHAPTER VI - EPILOGUE
A FEW MONTHS LATER

Everyone is gathered for Jolie’s 80th birthday. Cassandra & Vicki give her a gift, it is her broken jewellery put back together. Cordelia enters holding Aurick’s hand. She says she has a gift for Jolie. She takes her hand and takes her to the light room. She opens the door and it is beautiful. Codelia had Aurick paint Grayson’s face on a wall as a mural with a painting of the town on the other. Cordelia also walks over to the telescope and unveils a second telescope saying that they can stay up here forever. Jolie and Cordelia both look into the telescopes at the town they both found love.

Premiere Magazine #244

The Roundup with Jeff Stockton (Season 25 Round 4)

Round 4 gave us a new Marvel Universe production, a reboot of a horror icon, and another David Fincher flop. Here's The Roundup....

3. Julia Roberts
I had some pretty big problems with the script of Malik, but the one big positive the film had going for it is the performance of Julia Roberts. She gave her best lead performance in years (and her first lead performance in a LRF project).

2. Box Office
The box office was pretty solid this round, with only Malik failing to deliver profits. Next round might not go as well though with a couple of riskier projects to come before The Sandman: Season of Mists.

1. The Hammer of Thor
I honestly wasn't sure what to expect from The Hammer of Thor. Roy Horne has written a lot of good films, but his blockbuster attempts haven't always landed. Then you have Channing Tatum as Thor. While I still don't think he was the perfect choice (though I don't know who I would cast instead), the script plays well to Tatum's physical strengths.

3. Malik
Malik mostly worked, and it had a lot of potential, but it got in its own way far too many times to recommend. All of the flashbacks of Malik in high school to try to flesh out his character actually do the opposite, making him far less interesting. Those scenes also rob the film of all forward momentum each time they pop up. There was also an obvious lack of legal logic in the script from Alex Conn that a bit more research could have helped with. Ultimately Malik wastes a good Julia Roberts performance on a script that doesn't seem fully fleshed out.

2. Krueger
I really couldn't get into Krueger at all. The soundtrack, full of songs about dreams, seemed odd and pointless given the lack of the supernatural in this film. The first half of the film was fairly entertaining, but the story quickly began falling apart around the midway point. I suspect writer Joshua Collins had some difficulty getting Krueger to the conclusion we know has to come and it showed.

1. Awards Races
I'm not sure there have been any serious GRA contenders at this point, almost halfway through Season 25. Maybe someone like Ryan Gosling can steal a nomination if the Best Actor crowd is weak in the second half of the season, or maybe Madelaine Petsch or Julia Roberts in Best Actress, but outside of that I am guessing that most major nominees will be from the second half of the season.
