The Trades with Reuben Schwartz (Season 26)

Hello everyone and welcome back to another edition of The Trades, my annual look at the news, casting, rumors, and general happenings at the studio each season.

I remarked last season how Season 25 felt like a landmark milestone in LRF’s history and that leaves Season 26 in an interesting spot. Is this a new era of LRF in any sort of way? Well, from this observer’s perspective, the tides do seem to be turning in new directions—at least in the realm of superhero movies. For the longest time, LRF had a strong working relationship with DC Comics. As Disney’s MCU reigned supreme in Hollywood, the studio largely stayed away from popular Marvel Comics characters.

If this season is any indication, things have changed. With the edict that they must differentiate themselves from the Disney incarnations, some of Marvel’s biggest heroes are now finally making their way to the LRF backlots. In the first half of this season alone, audiences have been introduced to new versions of Iron Man and Captain America. And while those two films were big on their own respectively, they are also clearly interconnected as an older Tony Stark had a key supporting part in Captain America.

Looking ahead to the second half of the season, round 8 will see the Fantastic Four team up the Silver Surfer—LRF’s original Marvel hero, debuting back in Season 3. And then the season will end with the return of Mark Duplass as The Hulk, with new writer H.G. Hansen hyping Jenny Slate’s return as She-Hulk in that film as well. This now marks the second straight season with four different Marvel films, although this current batch seems less standalone than last season’s.

Despite being halfway through the season, there have not been many breakout critical hits thus far this season. The average Metascore of this season’s fifteen releases is 59, although it’s worth noting that critically acclaimed films do tend to come out later in the season. In the first thirteen films of the season, only one film (The Invincible Iron Man) had cracked 70, although that has improved as of late with the release of Miracles and Captain America. While the former’s ensemble cast will likely provide some potential nominees in the acting categories, most GRA categories seem difficult to pin down at the moment. It’s worth keeping an eye on Tara’s Web given that the erotic/thriller genre has been on an awards hot streak. The three previous LRF films in that genre (the Poison Ivy films and Natural Selection) won a combined 14 Golden Reel Awards between them, including three Best Actress trophies. Could Victoria Pedretti be next?

Looking ahead, big things are clearly on the way. The aforementioned superhero sequels are a key part of that and it’s also hard to overlook Tom Cruise and company returning for a Green Lantern sequel. With that in mind, as well as other potential breakout hits like Among Us, the box office should be good shape by the next time you hear from me.

Next round sounds like it could be a vital one for the actor races. First up is a dramatic turn from the Sandman as Adam Sandler follows up his Season 22 GRA nomination with a collaboration with Mo Buck and Thomas Vinterberg. And that week we also get the finale to the Caesar trilogy, a critical juggernaut that brings back all of the key names behind-the-scenes and in front of the camera (sans Russell Crowe). And this is just in the next two releases! Who knows what may to come in the rounds to follow.

All I know is that I look forward to reading my fellow mid-season segments and their insights! I’ll see you all again at the end of the season when we check in before the 26th annual Golden Reel Awards. Talk to you then!

The Gossip Rag (Season 26)

In this segment, we will delve into the inside dirt on some of the latest and upcoming LRF releases and the studio's stars....

Olivia Wilde
After the disastrous box office returns for her latest directorial effort, The Saints, director Olivia Wilde went on a long-winded social media rant blaming the flop on the audience being comprised of "sexists", "misogynists" and "white supremacists". Wilde went on the rant after the film became the 8th biggest bomb in LRF history. Wilde has since deleted the posts and her representatives refuse to comment on the situation.

Leah Remini
According to anonymous sources, Tom Cruise apparently had Leah Remini fired from the film Tara's Web, due to actress' history of attacking Cruise and Scientology in the press/media. After learning from studio sources that Remini was being cast in Tara's Web from writer Jacob Jones. Cruise reportedly said that he would not work on any future films written by Jones if Remini was cast in any of his films. Jones chose to fire Remini from the project to stay in Cruise's good graces. Remini was subsequently replaced with Samantha Mathis.

Glen Powell
Glen Powell, acting like his Captain America character, kept one of his costumes from the film and has taken to visiting children's hospitals in-character. Powell calls it the biggest perk of the job, and hopes that other LRF Marvel Universe stars will follow his lead.

Evan Rachel Wood
Evan Rachel Wood, the star of the upcoming video game adaptation, Among Us, has reportedly been a divisive figure on the set of the film. After hearing a crew member listening to Marilyn Manson music on-set, Wood apparently became livid and demanded that director André Øvredal fire the crew member. According to sources on the film, Richard Madden and Nathalie Emmanuel helped the director keep the peace and talk Wood down from her demands.

Zendaya
After Artemis flopped at the box office, Zendaya has agreed to appear in Zoe's Vegas - the sequel to the Season 13 hit Zoe Maye starring Selena Gomez - to hopefully help improve her LRF box office record. However, Zendaya apparently was surprised to find out that her role is not very big in the script. Having already signed the contract, Zendaya will still work on the film, but she is already unhappy with director Judd Apatow before filming has even begun, who she feels misled her regarding the importance of her role.

Premiere Magazine #255

The Roundup with Jeff Stockton (Season 26 Round 5)

Captain America closed out the first half of the season on a high note. Here's The Roundup....

3. Glen Powell
Has LRF found its next Alden Ehrenreich? It obviously took a lot of supporting roles before finally getting a big one like Captain America, but it seems like he could be the next homegrown A-Lister. Speaking of Captain America...

2. Captain America
This ended up being about as good of a Captain America origin story could be. Cobb and Berg nailed the tone and the casting, while giving the character some fun updates to make a familiar story feel more fresh.

1. Miracles
I really liked Miracles. I'm not surprised it struggled at the box office with the waffling of tones/genres, but it was a very entertaining film filled with great performances - especially Qualley, Brolin and Plemons.

3. Box Office
Captain America was obviously a big hit, but Artemis and Miracles both flopped so it wasn't a perfect round.

2. Artemis
Zendaya's lead character was very unlikable, which made it hard to get into the film right off the bat. I liked the background and the setting of the film, but the plot was overly complicated and filled with too many pointless details that constantly slowed things down.

1. Award Contenders
Not much on that front so far with the two best (and best reviewed) films of the season being Miracles and Captain America. Miracles may be able to pull a couple acting nominations, but ensemble films tend to struggle in the actual ceremony. That's about it though, granted Caesar Part III will come out in Round 6...

Domestic Box Office: $328,894,910
Foreign Box Office: $287,482,596

Reaction: Captain America overtook Titans: Evil Incarnate as the highest grossing film of the season so far to end the first half of Season 26 on a high note.

"Glen Powell perfectly introduces Captain America to Last Resort Films with his performance here. In fact, the casting is pretty spot on throughout. I appreciated that the film didn't just do a simple rehash of the origin for its entire running time. Both time periods work on their own merits in the story with the script doing as good of a job as possible to bridge them." - Dave Manning, Ridgefield Press

"While I enjoyed LRF’s Captain America as a whole, it still covered some plot points that were hit in the MCU’s version. Glen Powell was great as Cap, and for the most parts the changes made for his origin worked. It almost felt like more than one movie crammed in here, but as I said as a whole I enjoyed Captain America and can’t wait to see what follows." - J. Darrell Ellington, Behind the Camera

"Even though it feels like two movies in one, D.R. tries his best to reinvent Steve Rogers without drawing comparisons to previous films (a feat that is undoubtedly challenging for every writer doing the other Avengers too). Glen Powell is a perfect fit for the role, paving the way for a great future as a leading man. Although the story is fairly simple and straightforward, its inclusion in the larger Marvel scheme makes the last half of the movie an enjoyable popcorn-munching blockbuster experience. Additionally, Selleck's portrayal of senior Tony is like a cherry on top, making the film even more enjoyable." - Rebecca Cruyssen, CNN.com

Rated PG-13 for sequences of intense action and war violence and scenes of peril

Comic to Film: Captain America

For the latest edition of Comic to Film, we are going to take a look at the first Captain America film from LRF's Marvel Universe. The Glen Powell-led film is being directed by Peter Berg (Rainbow Six, Triple Identity) and written by D.R. Cobb (Wonder Woman, Splinter Cell: Blacklist).
