Now Showing: Gears of War 2

Gears of War 2
Genre: Action/Sci-Fi/War
Director: Zack Snyder
Writer: Mark Newton
Based on the video game series
Cast: Joel Edgerton, Edgar Ramirez, Glen Powell, Terry Crews, Lili Simmons, Uli Latukefu, Burn Gorman, Ray Porter, Ryan Hurst, Ted Levine, Nora Arnezeder, Martha Higareda, Bryan Brown

Plot: Six months after killing a Locust stronghold with the Lightmass Bomb, Marcus Fenix (Joel Edgerton) and Dominic Santiago (Edgar Ramirez) are providing protection for Anya Stroud (Lili Simmons) as she searches Jacinto Medical Center for a missing soldier. They eventually find the dead body of the missing soldier. The hospital is suddenly attacked by a group of Locust forces. They join up with Tai Kaliso (Uli Latukefu), a Gear corporal in charge of the hospital's security. Tai fought with Marcus and Dom during the Pendulum Wars and is happy to see them. Together the three, defend the building from the group Locust Drones, moving throughout the entire hospital killing every single one.

Chairman Richard Prescott (Burn Gorman) gives a speech to the Gears stationed in Jacinto, telling them their sources indicate that the Locust Horde leadership survived the Lightmass Bomb and are now seemingly stronger than ever with some sort of weapon that can sink entire cities. He announces that humanity has one last option left to defeat the Locusts - a full-scale attack on the Horde in the Hollow, the vast underground tunnel network that is home to the Locusts. To accomplish this, COG forces are going to have to escort massive trucks called Assault Derricks toward a Locust occupied mountain town called Landown and drill down into the Hollow. Tai has requested a transfer to Marcus' unit for the mission.

Before shipping off for the next mission, Dom says goodbye to his wife Maria (Martha Higareda). She has become used to being a military wife over the years and doesn’t show Dom too much emotion as she knows he needs to focus on the mission at hand for the time being. Meanwhile, Marcus says goodbye to Anya. He asks her if she wants to go on a date with him when he gets back. She tells him to worry about getting back first and then they'll talk about it.

Marcus, Dom and Tai are assigned to Assault Derrick Rig 314, which is driven by Dizzy Wallin (Ryan Hurst). On the drive to Landown, Locust forces attack the convoy of Assault Derricks. Marcus, Dom and Tai open fire as Dizzy drives into Landown, parking in the town cemetery. Dizzy begins drilling into the ground while the soldiers defend the Derrick. Marcus and Dom descend into the Hollow in a Grindlift capsule. Back up on the surface, Rig 314 is attacked by Skorge (Ray Porter), leader of the Kantus Locust race. Dizzy opens fire at Skorge, but Tai steps in and tells Dizzy to escape. Dizzy doesn’t want to flee and continues helping Tai attack Skorge, but Tai pulls rank on Dizzy and orders him to get back to command. Dizzy begrudgingly follows the order. Now by himself, Tai attacks the 7-foot-tall Skorge single-handedly. Skorge quickly gains the upper hand. Tai soon runs out of ammo and tries to fight Skorge off with a chainsaw, but Skorge overpowers him. Tai is ready for Skorge to kill him, but Skorge instead takes him prisoner.

Underground, Marcus and Dom move through the Hollow, meeting up with other groups of COG soldiers. They travel deeper through the tunnels until they see for themselves how the Locusts are sinking cities - a Riftworm, a massive 10-mile-long worm-like creature. They witness in terror as the gargantuan creature sinks the entire city of Ilima before their very eyes, creating a giant sinkhole in the Earth. The soldiers quickly make their way through the sunken remains of Ilima. They look for survivors, finding Augustus Cole (Terry Crews) among the wreckage. He tells them that he is looking for Damon Baird, who has gone missing in the chaos after his Grindlift went off-course. Marcus, Dom and Cole move through the city until they find Baird's Grindlift jammed shut with Damon Baird (Glen Powell) inside. Marcus saws open the Grindlift allowing Baird to escape. He tells them that he witnessed some Locusts dragging COG soldiers off to be tortured.

Marcus, Dom, Damon and Cole all continue moving through the Hollow when they come across a Torture Barge - a mobile prison utilized by the Locust horde. Inside, they find Tai, who has been severely beaten and tortured. Marcus rushes to his side and frees him from his bounds. Marcus gives Tai a shotgun to fight with so they can continue their mission. Tai grabs the shotgun, and blows his own brains out with it. The group are horrified, especially his old comrade Marcus. Marcus, holding back tears, takes Tai's COG tags and leaves the Barge.

Colonel Victor Hoffman (Ted Levine) makes radio contact with the group, informing them that they have a last minute mission update. They are needed to go into the New Hope Research Facility, which fell into the sinkhole, because there may be information there as to the location of the Locust stronghold, codenamed Nexus, and the location of the Locust Queen. They will then have to move to Nexus and activate a beacon there to signal the location to the COG forces to drill down to for an all-out assault. The group blows open the heavily armored door of the facility. Despite the destruction of Ilima, the facility's security system is still fully operational. Damon is able to hack into the system in order to disable it. The group ventures into the inner labs, discovering that the facility had kept test subjects called Sires, which were Locust and Human crossbreeds. Damon hacks into the computer system to discover that there is a back entrance to the Locust stronghold, Nexus, at Mount Kadar. They decide to follow the tunnels in that direction.

The group makes its way to Nexus by crossing a massive underwater lake. Just as they think they will make it across the lake without being noticed, a massive fish-like creature emerges from the water and attacks them. Marcus throws a batch of grenades down the creature's throat, blowing it up into a heap of blood and meat. The group continues on their way toward a structure they theorize to be the Locust Queen's palace.

Back in Jacinto, Anya is scouring through old files when she finds several videos recorded by Dr. Adam Fenix (Bryan Brown) - Marcus' father - proposing a plan to stop the Locust horde. Adam suggests that if they were to sink Jacinto, it would flood the Hollow with seawater, which would destroy the Locust once and for all. She tries to contact Marcus and his team, but the signal is not strong enough to reach them in Nexus. Anya begins working on boosting the radio signal in order to contact them.

Marcus and his team manage to sneak into the palace where they are confronted by Myrrah the Locust Queen (Nora Arnezeder). She is amused by their intrusion and explains that she has already sent an army to attack Jacinto in anticipation of their attack on Nexus to distract the COG army on the surface. She then orders Skorge to attack them. Myrrah goes to escape. Marcus orders Cole and Damon to go after her, leaving himself and Dom to battle Skorge. They manage to get the upper hand on Skorge, but he manages to escape on a Hydra - a large, flying creature. Marcus and Dom both manage to grab onto the tendrils of the creature, hitching a ride up to the surface. Cole and Damon chase after the Queen, but she loses them by riding on a flying Reaver creature.

Anya takes her findings to Chairman Prescott and Col. Hoffman. He reveals that knew all about Adam Fenix’s idea, but hasn’t mentioned it as Jacinto was humanity’s last, best hope and that was a classified last resort plan. Out a window, they see Skorge flying on the Hydra. Prescott decides to order an evacuation of Jacinto. Hoffman suggests that they could use a Lightmass Bomb in a cavern underneath the city for maximum impact. Prescott announces the immediate evacuation order to the entire city. He says that it was not an easy decision to make and that many may be lost, but that it is the only course of action given the information they presently have.

Skorge is still not aware that Marcus and Dom have hitched a ride on the Hydra. Marcus and Dom set some explosives on the creature and jump off before it explodes, killing Skorge with it. Marcus and Dom rendezvous with Cole and Baird at COG command in Jacinto where they learn about the evacuation of the city. Hoffman tasks Marcus and his team to deliver the bomb that will sink the city.

Damon pilots a King Raven helicopter with Marcus, Dom and Cole that is carrying the Lightmass Bomb that they need to drop down a tunnel. Once the bomb is in place, Marcus presses the big red button. They watch from above as the bomb’s massive explosion takes the entire city of Jacinto down into the Earth and beneath sea level. Seawater then begins to flood the sinkhole and the Locust tunnels around it. Marcus radios command, informing them that the mission is complete as Damon turns the King Raven around to head toward the evacuation point. Dom tries to call his wife to make sure she’s okay, but he is unable to contact her. He quickly begins to think the worst - that she didn’t make it out of Jacinto and they just killed her.

When the group makes it to the evacuation point, Dom is the first one out of the Raven. He begins to frantically search the camp for Maria. He runs into Anya and asks if she has seen or heard from his wife. Anya breaks the news to Dom that Maria’s evacuation group never made it to any of the evacuation ships. Dom breaks down crying. He pulls out a gun and is about to kill himself until Marcus, Damon and Cole all jump on him to wrestle the weapon away from him. Myrrah, the Locust Queen, has survived the destruction of Nexus. She has a small group of loyal soldiers left by her side. She assures them that they will rebuild as she cannot allow the destruction of Nexus to go without retribution.

Post-Credits:
Anya picks up a faint transmission from Adam Fenix. He asks if anyone is out there and chastises them for flooding the Hollow as it has now created an even greater threat for humanity. The transmission cuts out before Anya can respond.

Release: Red Riding Blood

Red Riding Blood
Genre: Horror
Director: Dan Trachtenberg
Writer: Andrew Doster
Cast: Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Emile Hirsch, Violet McGraw, Dylan Arnold, Stefanie Scott, Patricia Clarkson

Budget: $24,000,000
Domestic Box Office: $20,088,185
Foreign Box Office: $24,818,400
Total Profit: -$6,094,322

Reaction: This one didn't miss out on profits by much, but it does result in a less than ideal season for writer Andrew Doster as both of his horror projects this season lost money.

"The film began with a powerful sense of ominous dread, but as it progressed, it devolved into a chaotic and bewildering mess. Despite some genuinely frightening moments, the characters were never developed enough for the audience to care about their survival. Furthermore, the conclusion left me feeling frustrated, not due to its content, but because I didn't have the sense to stop watching earlier." - Chet Buckley, MovieWeb

"There is some decent horror imagery in Red Riding Blood, with the film starting with a bang. After that though, things get more standard and the scares become stuff we've seen all too many times before. The end result is a mostly generic horror effort with a few flashes of creative genre elements." - Tim Givens, Lexington Ledger

"I thought that Mary Elizabeth Winstead had graduated from these types of films. I guess not. Her talent and name do lend a bit of legitimacy to the project. Unfortunately, the script fails to live up to the promise of its casting. The cold opening scene of the film really set a great tone for the flick, but as the story goes on it becomes less scary by the moment." - Michael Carthage, Associated Press

Red Riding Blood
Genre: Horror
Director: Dan Trachtenberg
Writer: Andrew Doster
Cast: Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Emile Hirsch, Violet McGraw, Dylan Arnold, Stefanie Scott, Patricia Clarkson

Plot: The young couple had been walking for hours inside the bush, after they had left the path to photograph a fawn that had cut them off. The boy, Robert (Dylan Arnold) tries to reassure his girlfriend Olivia (Stefanie Scott) who begins to be visibly frightened by the situation. Suddenly they hear a little voice saying that she knows the right path and that she would have accompanied them. Moreover, his house is not far away. Robert says to be seen and a little girl (Violet McGraw) comes out from behind a tree. Her long curly and blond hair was semi-hidden by the red hood whose cape, also vermilion, almost touched the ground. The face was partially hidden by the scarlet fabric, but you could see the pale complexion of the frugola. From the shadow generated by the hood, two large blue and cold eyes like ice peeked out. The girl approaches Olivia and gives her her hand and they begin to follow the child while the camera shows how the three go into the thick bush. The next scene sees Olivia stained with blood on her face and on the clothes she is panting and stops to catch her breath while looking around as if a person or an animal could appear and attack her. In his eyes you could feel all the terror he felt. He takes the phone from his trouser pocket and begins to curse it because there is no signal. The sudden croak of a crow made her jump and Before he could resume his journey, he heard a chant "Ring a-ring o 'roses , a pocketful of posies. Ashes to ashes. We all fall down. ". A sharp and childish laugh gave her goose bumps. At that laugh, Olivia started running again until she stumbled over some roots that jutted out of the ground. Finally we see the little girl approaching and tells her that it is not necessary to run away and something drags Olivia until she is on the ground in the thick bush.

Then we see a car, a 1976 Impala in which there are Arthur (Emile Hirsch) and Michelle (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), they are going to an important photo shoot that could improve their career as photographers. While they listen to the radio they hear the news of the disappearance of two young people while they were going to the grandmother of one of the two. After driving many hours they stop at a motel in Cannock Wood. After settling into the room, Michelle reads a newspaper while Arthur takes a shower. Among the various news there is also that of the death in prison of Raymond Morris, imprisoned some forty years earlier for the murder of some children despite he had always professed to be innocent. There is also the news of the couple who had listened for radio in the afternoon. When Arthur came out of the shower Michelle with sweet words and mischievous eyes convinced him to investigate the missing couple. The two discover from the lady Walderson (Patricia Clarkson), the owner of the motel, that the forest of Cannock Chase has become a place of pilgrimage for lovers of the paranormal. In fact, it seems that an animal similar to a dog or a wolf has been warned among the trees, with dark fur and tonnage outside the norm. sighting. Darkness was almost falling when they arrived at Cannock Chase, the "cursed forest". While the two photographers go into the forest Michelle lights a cigarette while the boy hears a rustling not far from them and says he thought he saw something red in the vegetation. Arthur begins to run towards that direction, stopping after a few minutes. Shortly afterwards Michelle joined him and severely scolded him. A chant filled the night air of Cannock Chase. As if to make an order of the song, a tree started to slant sideways. If he had not approached his companion, Michelle would have been crushed by the plant. An amused laugh replaced the tone of just before before everything was silent. The two began to walk and after a while they returned to the starting point (where the tree had risked crushing Michelle). After a while they started walking again, they noticed something disturbing, the hands of their watches are going backwards and coming back to the starting point. Arthur says that he almost feels like being in a movie, the situation is really strange and that the same thing happened in a film of the late 90's (The Blair Witch Project). Charlotte has an idea, that of breaking pieces of bark from trees to try to find the way and they started walking again. After walking for a while they found themselves at the starting point. Charlotte, angrily, says it's an impossible thing because they always went straight. The two decide to sit near the fallen tree for a few minutes to regain their strength first to leave again. The torch that illuminated their path, held by Arthur, showed that the undergrowth grew thicker as they progressed, although when they left the path the bush was very scarce and remained constant. Charlotte lit a cigarette, which was now running out, but she didn't have time to look up that slammed again against her partner who had stopped suddenly. Arthur tells the girl to look ahead because to a big branch of a tree had been tied a rope that went down tense in the direction of the ground and to whose other head was found, dangling, the lifeless body of a boy. But Charlotte tried to reassure Arthur, she saw nothing at that point. Suddenly the corpse, which looked like Robbie's (which saw only Arthur), moved its head and opened its mouth whose teeth seemed to have been rotten for a long time and from which came a huge swarm of flies that headed towards the only one that could to see them, thus forcing him to run away from that place, driving out something that was not really there. Charlotte tried to follow his friend but immediately fell ruinously to the ground and realizes that her ankle had been grasped by a female hand. She felt her hand pull her to her, as if she wanted to drag her underground into the world of the dead, Charlotte also saw a face of a young woman with red hair coming out of the ground, as if she wanted to see her victim. She tried to free herself by kicking her free hand, but without success. Suddenly a chant, which grew louder and closer and seemed to be sung by a child, made the ghost that had grabbed her disappear. At that point Charlotte, still on the ground, found herself in front of a little girl who kindly asked her if she was lost. Then he turned towards his interlocutor and a shiver ran down his back when he saw that the girl had completely black eyes, with no iris or sclera, and that they didn't seem to reflect the little moonlight that filtered through the leaves. She blinked a few times and noticed that her eyes were normal, with the white sclera and blue irises, although her complexion continued to appear pale. After looking at the baby in the face, Charlotte seems a little confused (it seems almost half-hypnotized). The child tells the woman to follow her because she can accompany her out of that situation. The woman observed her guide all the way, as if she wanted to keep an eye on her because she didn't trust him and after a while she said jokingly "We've been walking for quite a while, it's not like you're taking me to the middle of the forest to eat me ? The little girl says no and they arrive at a clearing with a moonlit house in the center. Then he turned towards his interlocutor and a shiver ran down his back when he saw that the girl had completely black eyes, with no iris or sclera, and that they didn't seem to reflect the little moonlight that filtered through the leaves.

The little girl enters the house. Charlotte coughed a couple of times this was the amount of dust in the air, then bringing a hand in front of his mouth he then heard a rhythmic creak from what must have been the living room and walked towards it.

In the room from which the noise came he saw a rocking chair that noisily paced back and forth. He approached the moving furniture and saw a human figure sitting on it. Charlotte approaches but before she started talking she noticed that the person she was talking to was actually little more than bones covered with dry skin. From the woman's mouth, a couple of small spiders came out in a hurry, as if disturbed by the they sleep in that unusual lair. After a curse, Charlotte seems to have come out of a state of stupidity and seems to understand the gravity of the situation in which she found herself. Charlotte turns to the child and hears a howl. The little girl giggles and begins to clap in a sense of joy while her eyes go back to being black without iris. Charlotte goes to the entrance giving a shoulder to the little girl who falls to the ground laughing amused.Charlotte opens the door and instead of the clearing surrounded by the woods, Blaze finds herself in another room in the house. The little girl with a satisfied air says that once you enter this house, you can't go out until the soul is devoured and she almost announced her satisfaction. "He is hungry," he concluded, licking his lips. The girl approaches Charlotte and says that Charlotte would stay and play with them forever. Charlotte backed away without taking her eyes off her small guest, who followed him as she retreated. With her back she hit a table, turned and saw that there was a candelabra on the floor, close at hand. She grabbed him and, as soon as the child with the black eyes and the blond curls was close enough, kicked her to the ground and started to hit her head with the improvised weapon she had taken. A trickle of blood began to flow from the wound he had opened on her temple, forming a small red pool under her head. She went to the window and looked first at the glass, then at the candlestick, then at the glass again and broke the window pane. After opening a gap , passed through it and, with the Moon illuminating the road, started to run towards the wood. Reached the edge of the clearing, he went into the vegetation without ceasing to run and in his flight he almost clashed with Arthur. The two hug and Charlotte begins to tell what happened until the man says "I'm still here, he's hungry, your friend's soul wasn't enough". The voice, however, was that of the child and Charlotte recoils in fear. Behind Arthur appeared the red hooded child, who stood to stare at her as if nothing had happened, the wound in her temple and the blood had disappeared. The girl understands that Arthur was not his friend but a kind of dummy or a hallucination or something. Meanwhile a series of howls can be heard from the surrounding trees while Charlotte no longer knows what to do. Suddenly a hairy being leaps from the woods at Charlotte trying to defend herself and the screen goes black.

Then you see a newspaper article in which there is written of the disappearance of two young photographers, Charlotte Clark and Arthur Evans, in Cannock Chase. At the end of the article the newspaper closes by showing Lady Wanderson that with a satisfied and smiling air welcomes a large group of boys equipped with cameras and other accessories.

Rock Paper Scissors
Genre: Thriller/Suspense
Director: Lynne Ramsay
Writers: Rene Menzie & Harmony Winters
Based on the novel by Alice Feeney
Cast: Charlie Cox, Alison Brie, Emmy Rossum, Anthony Hopkins, Annabelle Wallis, Jon Tenney

Budget: $28,000,000
Domestic Box Office: $20,480,112
Foreign Box Office: $18,439,503
Total Profit: -$19,045,008

Reaction: It probably shouldn't be any surprise at this point when a novel adaptation fails to make a profit at the box office. Since the start of Season 25, there have been 21 novel adaptations released, but only 6 have made a profit. With this one specifically, Charlie Cox and Alison Brie did not bring a ton of star power to the film, and word of mouth couldn't propel it.

"Rock Paper Scissors is filled with so many (mostly false) narrative threads (which only sometimes actually matter), that by the time the truth is revealed in the end, I just didn't have enough energy to be surprised. I suppose the end was a surprise, but only because it didn't really make much sense. Some scenes slow things down and don't have much meaning other than to mislead the audience, but the cast lacks the charisma and chemistry to make up for rotten plotting." - Woodrow Nelson, Baxter Bulletin

"Even though I really liked the storytelling through the letters the movie drags a bit after a while. The viewer gets rewarded with a good ending, although there are a bit too many twists and turns for my taste. Sadly some things didn't make any sense to me, for example the protagonist inability to recognize faces shouldn't led to him not recognizing any people at all." - Clark Chase, Chicago Sun-Times

"This baffling narrative resembles my first experience watching The Room on Adult Swim. I don't fully understand it. It's frustrating that the story could have worked. I don't blame the director, cast, or source material since, with the well-crafted original context, this could have been easily avoided." - Gordon Sheffield, London Times

Director: Lynne Ramsay

Based on the novel by Alice Feeney
Cast: Charlie Cox, Alison Brie, Emmy Rossum, Anthony Hopkins, Annabelle Wallis, Jon Tenney

Plot: In February 2020, Amelia (Alison Brie) and her husband Adam Wright (Charlie Cox) will have a weekend getaway in Scotland with their black Labrador, Bob.

Adam, a screenwriter, sold the rights to his first screenplay. Rock Paper Scissors, a dark, twisted love story about a man who writes a letter to his wife every year on their anniversary, even after she dies. Rock Paper Scissors is the only screenplay of Adam's that has never become a film.

Adam has a neurological disorder called prosopagnosia, where he's unable to recognize distinguishing features, even for familiar faces. He doesn't like to tell people about his condition.

Amelia nearly hits a stag, resulting in an argument. Adam says the trip to Scotland is a mistake, and Adam's also grumpy not having his phone. Amelia purposely hid this morning, though she doesn't know he knows. They eventually arrive at Blackwater Chapel, an old church where they'll be staying.

A letter written on their first anniversary talks about them getting married and going to Scotland on their honeymoon. This morning, she's informed Adam that the agent of his favorite author, Henry Winter (Anthony Hopkins), has passed away. Adam has always wanted to adapt Winter's work. Today, she gives him an origami paper bird for good luck since he's superstitious. Later that day, Adam reports that Winter's agreed to allow him to adapt his work. Adam doesn't know she played in getting Winter to agree to the adaptation.

In the present day, at Blackwater, the doors initially appear to be locked, but after they look around, they're wide open. Once inside, Amelia sees a smiley face in the dust on a church bench. As they bring their luggage inside, Amelia's unhappy when she sees Adam has his laptop with him since he'd promised he wouldn't work this weekend. Amelia has always felt that there are three in their relationship — him, her and his writing.

In the kitchen, they find an unsigned note welcoming them to the place. Amelia says the only person she's interacted with from Blackwater is the housekeeper via e-mail. In the corner is a vast freezer filled with homemade frozen meals. The floor is covered with huge slabs that turn out to be old tombstones. There is also a trapdoor that leads to the crypt, where the wine's stored.

After dinner, Adam and Amelia reflect on their relationship, and Adam pulls out his lucky origami crane. By now, Adam has adapted three of Winter's books, and Henry eventually became like a father figure to him. However, Adam hasn't spoken to Henry Winter in a long time, and he doesn't want to talk about what happened.

A letter written on their second anniversary talks about how Adam's work has been going well since the Henry Winter adaptation. Still, his success has been bad for their relationship. They have little time together, and they don't have the baby she'd been hoping for. Still, for their anniversary, Adam surprises her with a house he has bought for them.

In the present day, Amelia grows moody and unhappy as they chat, tossing his origami crane into the fire. Adam dives to retrieve it, but the crane is singed. Amelia apologizes, but they start to argue about their relationship.

To Amelia's delight, Adam suddenly kisses her. However, Amelia then screams when she notices a face in a stained glass window. Adam comforts her, reassuring her it's nothing. Adam locks the front door, and Amelia wonders where he found the key she hadn't seen before.

A letter written on their third anniversary talks about how she has started going with Adam to fancy parties to help him identify people talking to him. She knows Adam wanted to go to a party today, despite their anniversary, because Henry Winter would be there. Still, she purposely neglects to tell him when she notices Henry trying to get his attention during the party.

In the present day, Robin (Emmy Rossum), a woman who lives in a cottage near Blackwater Chapel. She's the one who opened the doors for Amelia and Adam and was the face that Amelia saw. Robin lives a life of solitude out there.

Meanwhile, Amelia goes to the crypt fetching a bottle of wine but gets stuck when the trapdoor slams shut and the lights go out. She has difficulty breathing as her asthma kicks in, noticing scratches on the walls. Adam says that he thinks the power has just cut out, and he goes to find her inhaler. She's unable to find the stairs, so he goes down instead. Just then, the power comes back on, and Amelia holds him in relief.

Afterward, they head for the bedroom. Strangely, the bed has the exact same pillows and blankets as theirs at home, and the walls are painted the exact same color. Amelia is weirded out, but Adam points out that she copied their bedroom from a catalog, and perhaps they did the same.

Amelia goes into the bathroom to change into something sexy, but Adam is not there when she emerges. Instead, he's outside exploring. Adam saw a "DANGER KEEP OUT" sign and followed it through a narrow staircase. He ends up in the bell tower. He pulls out his phone, which he retrieved after Amelia hid it.

He thinks about how Amelia has been behaving strangely. She'd him sign off on a life insurance policy in his name when she thought he had drunk a few weeks ago. He also knows he's not "blameless" since he has cheated on Amelia before.

Amelia finds Adam in the bell tower. As they talk, a cloud of bats fly out of the bell and nearly knock Adam out of the tower. Amelia is paralyzed with fear for a moment but manages to recover in time to save Adam. However, Adam thinks to himself that Amelia almost let him fall to his death.

That night, Adam has a dream that he's had many times before. He dreams of Amelia driving them back in the rain. Things seem strange, as if they're "stuck in a loop." Then, a woman in a red kimono appears on the road.

When Amelia rouses him from his dream, she reminds him of no woman in the red kimono. Instead, she urges him to write down what he can remember. They both know that the nightmare is really some version of memory from the night his mother died when he was 13, with his mother being the one in the accident. It had been raining, having been out walking their dog. She was dressed in a red kimono because she wore the outfit when her various male "friends" stayed over. Due to his condition, Adam couldn't recognize the car driver that hit his mother, and it still haunts him.

A letter written on their fourth anniversary talks about a challenging year. She's has been going through the second round of IVF while feeling increasingly alone since Adam's so busy. There's a producer interested in possibly making Rock Paper Scissors into a movie, so that has automatically become his first priority.

Today, Amelia and Adam go back to sleep, but Amelia is awoken by a noise downstairs. Adam eventually finds Amelia hiding in the bathroom in fear. He claims he was also awoken by the noise, and Adam says he went downstairs but didn't find anything. They also determine that the power is out again — the chapel has a backup generator, but it doesn't seem to be working — and now there's no water, which they assume is because the pipes are frozen.

Adam suggests that Amelia take a sleeping pill and go back to sleep. He says they should just head back first thing tomorrow, and Amelia warily agrees.

Meanwhile, Adam merely pretends to be asleep and heads back downstairs. He's the one who has purposely shut off the power to the chapel and how he purposely trapped her in the crypt. He then remembers the various secrets he keeps, like how he occasionally slips sleeping pills in her drinks before bedtime.

A letter written on their fifth anniversary talks about how jealous she's been acting lately. Last week, they got into a big fight after Adam told her about how he'd had drinks and dinner with October O'Brien (Annabelle Wallis), a beautiful young actress. She was interested in being in the Rock Paper Scissors movie. Adam says he has to work on their anniversary, but she finds him in their home with October instead. October claims she was there to help Adam cook an anniversary dinner for her as a surprise. She feels terrible for doubting him, and the three of them end up spending the evening together.

Currently, Robin waits until Adam is back upstairs, relieved to not have been caught. She sneaks into the secret room of the chapel, which is hidden behind the library. She has overheard their plan to leave tomorrow, but she has no intentions of letting that happen.

When Amelia awakes, she realizes Bob is missing. They search the entire place looking for Bob to no avail. As he's searching, Adam pulls out his cell phone, and Amelia realizes he was lying when he said he didn't have it. In the process of searching, Adam finds a drawer filled with news clippings about October O'Brien and a pamphlet that recites the history of Blackwater Chapel that hadn't been there before. It describes how Blackwater Chapel had once been used as a Witches' Prison (a place to imprison people accused of witchcraft before burning them at stake) with the prisoners being kept in the crypt.

Unable to find Bob indoors, they begin searching outdoors. Outside, they find a small graveyard and an area where clawfoot bathtubs are being used as large planters. Nearby, they find a small cottage with a car parked outside. The chimney is smoking, but when they knock, no one answers. Adam peeks inside and sees the woman with a rabbit on her lap and the candles everywhere.

Inside, Robin closes all the curtains and feels distressed by Adam's intrusion into her cottage. Nowadays, the only visitors she's used to are Patrick (the postman) and Ewan (a local farmer). Outside, Amelia and Adam talk about her, not knowing Robin can hear what they're saying. Finally, they decide to leave her a note-taking about their missing dog, offering a reward for his return and leave.

Watching them go, Robin knows what happened to Bob since she's the one who took him.

A letter written on their sixth Anniversary talks about Adam's things is going well since Adam is adapting another one of Henry Winter's books, and Rock Paper Scissors is in pre-production. October's involvement has brought in other A-list talents. They're spending this anniversary at October's French villa while October's out of town. As an anniversary gift, she gives Adam an iron key. When he asks what it opens, she replies that it's a secret.

Today, Adam wonders how seeing the woman in the cottage triggered a strange feeling of déjà vu. As they head back to the chapel, it starts to hail. From far away, Adam thinks he sees someone enter the chapel through the front doors. He breaks out into a run down the hill, though Amelia is unable to keep up.

After letting herself in the chapel, Robin goes into their bedroom. She takes the origami bird from Adam's wallet and the prescription sleeping pills. Finally, she releases Amelia's inhaler's contents.

When Amelia finally makes it to the chapel, she looks for her inhaler, but it's gone. Meanwhile, Adam has located the secret room behind the library. Adam says that someone was here. He also says he's starting to remember this place and recognizes the secret room he once saw in a magazine.

A letter written on their seventh anniversary talks about how a few months ago, October was found dead, having overdosed in an apparent suicide. On this anniversary, they're in New York for the premiere of the newest Henry Winter adaptation, and Adam spends the whole time hanging out with Henry. They meet for dinner, getting into an argument. Adam notes that she needs a life of her own, and her remarks he's too obsessed with Henry Winter.

Currently, Robin lies in wait as Adam and Amelia look around the secret room. Adam knows this property belongs to Henry Winter and that this room is where Henry writes. Finally, Adam tells Amelia that Henry became upset with him when he told Henry a while back that he no longer wanted to adopt Henry's novels. He hadn't told Amelia since he didn't want to admit that she was right about Henry, that he was selfish.

They hear the sound of Bob barking, but then it stops. Outside, they find a snowman dressed up as Henry Winter. Then, they find Bob's collar resting on a gravestone. The gravestone belongs to Henry Winter, who apparently passed away two years ago.

Going back inside, Adam asks to see the e-mail she'd initially sent regarding Blackwater Chapel, sent from info@blackwaterchapel3.com. Adam remarks that Henry "had a thing" about the number 3 and the color black. Adam also says that Henry's agent mentioned that Henry had sent in a manuscript back in September. Still, Henry would've been dead by then, according to the gravestone. Adam also notes that Henry's headstone mentioned that he was the "father of one."

They check on the car to ask for help regarding Bob, then get out of there. However, they soon discover that all the tires of the car have been slashed.

Back at the cottage, Robin flashbacks to when Henry was dying and asked her to help him. She'd met him at the hospital, and he left against medical advice, and she had taken him back to the chapel. She saw he had a pet rabbit named Robin. He had told her that he was halfway through his last novel but was unlikely to finish it. They talk about how Henry had made up the stories about Blackwater being a Witches' Prison to keep people away.

When Robin had stepped away for a moment, she had returned to find him dead. She didn't tell anyone that he'd died. She also didn't touch any of the considerable amounts of money that he'd left her — except for buying some stuff in preparation for Adam and Amelia's arrival.

A letter written on their eighth anniversary talks about how she's thinking about leaving Adam. She has a work friend who makes her feel seen, unlike with him. With Adam busy working and unsure about their marriage, they didn't celebrate their anniversary that year. She gave him a bronze rabbit statue as a gift.

In the present day, Adam and Amelia search the secret room. Adams finds a small bronze rabbit in the desk drawer and finds his origami bird in another.

In a letter written on their ninth anniversary, she writes about how she's been wanting marriage counseling. They celebrated their anniversary at home this year. Her friend from work showed up unexpectedly. Her friend had apparently had a makeover for her date, and now the two friends look very similar. After the friend leaves, Adam remarks that the friend seems to have an "actress" quality about her.

Seeing all the anniversary gifts gathered here, Adam accuses Amelia of being a part of whatever's happening here, which Amelia denies. They start inspecting the photos in the study, including three that seem to have been added recently. However, they first notice an open door. Inside is a child's room, covered in dust. There's a Jack-in-the-Box toy in the room, but the word "Jack" has been crossed out and replaced with the name "Adam."

In a letter written on their tenth anniversary, it talks about writes about how today should be their anniversary, but it isn't. The day before their anniversary, Adam saw an interview Henry did where he disparaged Adam's work. The next day, she'd left work early to surprise him — only to find Adam in bed with her friend from work. Adam had claimed that he thought she was her. He begged for a chance to try to fix things.

In the present day, Amelia points out a photo to Adam. It's of Adam on his wedding day, and Henry's in the background. Amelia then tells him that the woman in the photo isn't her. It's a photo of him marrying his first wife, Robin, Henry's daughter., revealing Amelia is Robin's friend from work. At first, Adam doesn't believe that his ex-wife could be Henry's daughter, but then he thinks about how Robin never wanted to talk about her family.

After learning of Adam's infidelity, Robin had left Adam. Robin's bitter about how she'd been kind to Amelia at work. Still, Amelia had stabbed her in the back by going after her husband. Robin regrets leaving Bob behind. Around that time is when Henry had reached out, saying he was dying and asking for help.

Robin's mother died by drowning in a clawfoot bath. Robin has always believed that Henry was responsible, who wrote a book about a man killing his wife in the bathtub. When Robin wrote a story in school about a novelist who committed murders and then writes about it. In response, Henry cut off her hair. Robin also always resented Henry to solve things with money. Robin's the one who completed her father's book and submitted it to his agent.

One of the things Robin took with her before leaving Adam was her box of anniversary letters. Even after things ended, she continued to write them:
In a letter written on (what would've been) their eleventh Anniversary, Robin writes about living in a Scottish cottage while he's in London with Amelia now. She writes about how she was the one who asked her father to let Adam adapt one of his books. Meanwhile, Robin knows Henry's using Adam to get to her.

At the same time, Amelia knows how Robin's situation looks terrible. Still, she thinks their marriage's over long before she showed up. Amelia and Adam got married right after his divorce from Robin were finalized.

Amelia tells Adam that they'd just grab their stuff and leave, and he doesn't say much since he still seems to be in shock that this all turned out to be some type of revenge plot by Robin. However, as they go back into their bedroom, they see there's a red, silk kimono on the bed, and on the mirror, the words "ROCK PAPER SCISSORS" have been scrawled in red lipstick.

In a letter written in present-day and on their twelfth Anniversary, Robin writes that she has completed the "ROCK PAPER SCISSORS" book, which's about a couple who have been married for ten years. Every anniversary they exchange traditional gifts, and each year, the wife writes her husband a letter that she never lets him read" The couple goes on a weekend getaway to save their troubled marriage, "but things aren't what or who they seem." She plans to submit the book to Henry's agent so Adam can finally see some version of his beloved story on film, but only if he ends things with Amelia.

Henry had hired a private investigator named Samuel Smith (Jon Tenney) to keep tabs on them. It wasn't a coincidence that he started asking questions about Adam. Samuel learned that Amelia and Adam's paths crossed thirty years ago. Amelia was the one who the police suspected had been in the car that hit Adam's mother in that hit-and-run.

In the present day, Adam admits that he's the one who turned the generator off because he thought that if there was no power, Amelia would give up on this weekend, and they'd go home early. They decide to leave, but they realize they're locked in. Then, an envelope with Adam's name slides under the door, and Robin's letters are inside.

Adam reads the letters and feels sick after learning that Amelia's the one who killed his mother. He then confronts Amelia with the information that he's learned. Amelia starts having trouble breathing. Suddenly she reaches for a knife and starts coming towards him, but Robin comes towards her with a pair of sharp scissors.

Flashing forwards, in a letter written six months later, Robin and Adam are now back together. She talks about how no one will ever know what happened to Amelia. Her book version of Rock Paper Scissors has now been published, and Adam will be adapting it for the screen.

Meanwhile, Adam's nightmare about his mother has finally stopped now, having some closure. He still feels guilty and recalls what really happened. At 13, Adam had met a girl who lived nearby (Amelia). She was his first kiss. Amelia taught him to steal a car. The night his mother died, he had been driving with Amelia when she had placed her hand on his crotch, distracting him. Adam was the one driving when the car hit his mother. After the accident, she had pushed him out, driving off.

Outside of Adam's apartment, Samuel Smith, the private investigator, recalls being hired by Henry to follow Robin and Adam. Henry had told him about Robin. Robin's mother died having a stroke during a bath when Robin was 8. Robin had an overactive imagination and told stories that sometimes got her in trouble. When Henry got mad at her for it once, Robin cut off her hair and ran away. He didn't hear from her again until she asked for help regarding Adam.

Two years after Sam had stopped hearing from Henry, he went looking for him. He ends up at Blackwater Chapel. He finds Henry's grave, and the epitaph has been altered to read: "FATHER KILLER OF ONE, AUTHOR OF MANY." Nearby, there's a box of trinkets containing a paper crane, a vintage key, and a sapphire engagement ring with a human finger still attached.
