In this edition of Interview, Last Resort Films president Phil Dolan sits down with writer Jack Brown (Magic, The Crow: Midnight Garden) for the first time to discuss his horror slate and latest projects....
PD: You're coming off of your most critically acclaimed film yet, last season's Magic. Do you feel any pressure to top that?
JB: Honestly? Not really. I think Magic was kind of a perfect storm of story and attached talent just clicking, but that is not going to happen every time. Especially in the horror genre that I like writing in.
PD: I'm sure the ending of Willamette will probably get people talking like they were in 1999 when The Sixth Sense came out. Can you talk about Willamette and how the ending came about?
JB: Absolutely. I've always been fascinated by cults, so I knew eventually I wanted to do a cult movie. I also had this vague kernel of a thriller idea about a retired cop - I always had Harrison Ford in mind for the lead role - who has to go into the woods after the murderer of his wife. So the main plot of Willamette is the combination of those two ideas, but I didn't really have an ending. I had recently been reading about the Heaven's Gate "religious movement" *cough* cult *cough* and one question popped in my head... What if they were right? Once that question dawned on me, it just felt like the natural ending to the story.
PD: Later this season you have a sequel to the first of your horror remake/reboot films, Friday the 13th. What can you tell us about that project?
JB: The first film was really the building blocks for the sequel. For that one I wanted to keep it simple with Jason killing campers. That one established the tone and the world of the film, one where Jason has been killing for decades. With the sequel you will get another group of young people for Jason to antagonize, but that is only a piece of the story.
PD: What's next for you?
JB: Next season I should have a sequel to my Amityville. After that I have a few projects set for release over the next few seasons: a new standalone Crow film, a sequel to We Know Where You Live, and I'll be joining the studio's DC Universe with a project or two.
