The Roundup with Jeff Stockton (Season 31 Round 6)

The box office is on a hot streak with seven box office profits in a row, and even more so this round with three really good films being released. Here's The Roundup...

3. Scarface
Every Scarface film is more or less the same "rise to power" story, so Dwight Gallo didn't reinvent much there. But I will say that his adaptation feels very modern in its nihilistic tone and desensitizing violence. Tenoch Huerta feels colder and more sinister than Al Pacino did, which helps a similar story at least feel a bit different.

2. Hideaway
Hideaway is a bit of a tricky film as it is very much a film more about relationships than story/plot. Giving the film a very specific time and place was wise and the cast is filled with a laundry list of hot, up and coming stars all delivering solid work.

1. Willamette
Willamette wowed me. It might even be my Best Picture vote at this point. It's really the first time Harrison Ford has seemed to try in a performance in a long time. It opens and closes with shocking, and very different, moments. I don't want to go too much in specifics with the ending if folks haven't seen it yet, but I encourage you to check it out. The ending harkens back to the shock of M. Night Shyamalan's original twist ending, and unlike several of his twist endings since, the ending here despite being shocking, somehow makes complete sense.

3. N/A

2. Leading Lady Roles
This season has not been a great one in terms of roles for the studio's leading ladies. That has been a recurring issue for the studio which usually course corrects every so often before returning to the type of state its in now. As a result I think we'll end up with a Best Actress GRA nominee or two who may not be perceived as deserving of the nomination(s).

1. Best Picture Race
So far this season we've had a lot of really good films, including all three films this round, but we are definitely lacking in "Great" or "Must See" Films. At Night All Blood Is Black is the only film with a Metascore of 82+ so far this season.
