In 18th century Hong Kong, Fei (Li Jun Li) is being harrassed by a drunken British sailor. She runs away from the sailor, but runs right into the arms of a group of vampires. Fei pulls out her sword, revealing herself to be a vampire slayer. She defends herself against the group of vampires until their master vampire, Lothos (Tomas Lemarquis) appears. He smiles at Fei, showing his vampiric fangs to her, then he pounces on her to feed.

250 Years Later...

Buffy Summers (Meg Donnelly) arrives for her first day at her new school, Sunnydale High School. She has just moved to the suburban Sunnydale with her mother Joyce (Elisabeh Shue) and her younger sister Dawn (Teagan Croft) from a big city following the death of her father. Buffy shows up for her first cheerleading practice where she is prompty criticized by the cheer captain, Cordelia Chase (Kira Kosarin). In the cafeteria, Buffy doesn't know who to sit next to as she doesn't think the other cheerleaders like her, so she sits at a nearly empty table next to the bookish Willow Rosenberg (Annalise Basso). Buffy quietly eats her lunch until she sees Oliver (Jacob Elordi) enter the cafeteria and is immediately smitten with him. Noticing Buffy gazing at Oliver, Willow finally says something, telling Buffy that he is trouble. Buffy smiles at the thought.

Buffy returns from school and her mother asks her how her day was. Buffy groans about the other cheerleaders not liking her and missing her old school where all her friends are. Joyce tells Buffy that she understands, but that the family needed a new start. Dawn walks into the house and talks about how great her day was. Annoyed, Buffy decides to go out and explore their new town.

As Buffy is walking around, she is approached the trench-coated Merrick (Harrison Ford). He tells her that he is a Watcher and has been sent to train her to become a vampire slayer. Buffy laughs at the idea, saying it's still a little while until Halloween. He tries to convince her that if she doesn't train, she and her family are going to be at great risk from the vampires currently in the Sunnydale area. Buffy walks away from Merrick, not believing a thing he said.

Oliver and his friend Benny (RJ Cyler) are hanging out at the football field, drinking beers, when they are attacked by the vampire Amilyn (Russell Brand). The vampire catches Benny and bites his neck, but Oliver manages to speed away in his pickup truck. As he speeds through Main Street, he almost hits Buffy with his truck.

At school the next day, Oliver is clearly on edge. Cordelia tries to flirt with him and hint about wanting to go to prom with him, but his mind is clearly elsewhere. Merrick enters the school and reiterates his offer to train Buffy to be a vampire slayer. She once again refuses to listen to his crazy talk and walks away. Oliver follows her and asks why the old guy was talking to her about vampires. She claims the guy is just crazy, but Oliver says that he saw a vampire attack his best friend. Buffy is taken aback by this statement. Oliver takes Buffy to where he and Benny were attacked and points out the blood stains on the ground.

The next time Merrick approaches her, Buffy agrees to come with him. He takes her to an old, seemingly abandoned Spanish mission in town. He shows her many ancient books about vampires and shows her an antique mahogany stake, and he states that the easiest way to kill a vampire is with a wooden stake to the heart. They begin their training and Buffy discovers that he has abilities she never knew she had including enhanced agility, senses and endurance.

As Buffy is walking home, she sees Oliver out. She goes over to him and tells him that she believes him about the vampires. He doesn't feel safe talking out in the open, so he takes her to a local fair where they talk about the vampires as they walk along the fair's midway. They turn a corner and are blocked by a group of vampires, including Benny and Amilyn. Buffy and Oliver run away from them, and get onto the Ferris Wheel. The vampires begin climbing the wheel after them, they manage to kick a couple of the vampires off of the ride. Merrick arrives and just as he is about to throw Buffy a stake, Lothos appears. He grabs the stake and stabs Merrick in the chest with it. Lothos then leaves, and the vampires follow him away from the fair. Buffy rushes off of the ride and to Merrick's side. With his dying breath, Merrick tells Buffy to stop Lothos.

At school, Buffy is clearly saddened by Merrick's death. She sits down next to Willow in the cafeteria, and Willow asks her what's wrong. Buffy says that a friend of hers died the night before. Oliver sits down at the table with them and asks Buffy to go to the school prom with him. Buffy accepts. Cordelia sees this from across the cafeteria, and leaves in a huff. Oliver gets up to leave, and Willow asks Buffy how that happened. Buffy says that she and Oliver fought off vampires together. Surprisingly, Willow believes Buffy and says that she has definitely noticed some strange, seemingly supernatural things going on around Sunnydale. Buffy fills Willow in on everything Merrick had told her about vampires and vampire slayers. Willow is enthralled by the information.

When Buffy gets home, she tells her mother and Dawn that she was asked to go to the prom. Joyce becomes super excited for Buffy, but Dawn jokes that Buffy is becoming a Sunnydale sheep awfully fast. The three of them go pick out a prom dress. Dawn continues making sarcastic comments the entire time, but Buffy finally settles on a red dress (figuring that blood won't stain it).

Buffy arrives at the prom and as she and Oliver dance and share a kiss, Lothos and his vampire minions arrive at the school gymnasium. Benny attacks Oliver, while Amilyn goes after Buffy. Benny chases Oliver all the way to the shop class workshop. Amilyn chases Buffy underneath the bleachers. Buffy turns on the bleacher controls, causing them to open and crush Amilyn. Benny charges at Oliver, who falls back into a pile of scrap wood. Benny jumps down onto to Oliver, but Oliver has grabbed a broken 2x4, which hits Benny in the chest like a stake, killing him and turning him into a pile of dust. Oliver gets up and starts trying to find Buffy.

Buffy in confronted by Lothos in the hallway. Buffy runs away down the hall, trying to find an unlocked classroom to hide in. Buffy finally finds an unlocked math classroom and goes into it. She frantically looks for something she can use as a weapon, only finding a #2 pencil. Buffy turns around and Lothos is waiting for her. She holds the pencil in front of her, and Lothos laughs at her. As he begins explaining his plan of turning all of Sunnydale into vampires, Buffy throws the pencil at Lothos, impaling him in the chest. Lothos is stunned at his defeat at the hands of a teenage girl with a pencil. He stands there in disbelief as his body slowing turns to dust.

Oliver finally finds Buffy and asks her if she wants to finish their dance. They walk hand in hand into the now empty gym and continue their dance.

Post-Credits: The vampire Spike (Max Irons) arrives in Sunnydale determined to track down and kill yet another slayer after hearing about the Sunnydale High School incident on the news and piecing together that Lothos was defeated by a new slayer.
