Reaction: Expensive drama films don't have a great track record at the box office, but this film had the sports sub-genre and an all-star cast and crew that were clearly enough to draw a crowd.

.

"Chad Taylor delivers another gripping & captivating script that plays true to F1 politics that's elevated by Scorsese's eccentric direction. Almost everyone in the cast are standouts but mostly Fassbinder, Weisz, and Isaac as everyone gets time to show what they're made of. My top fav of the season." - Aubrey-Jade Mitchell, The Sun

"Monaco feels like an epic blockbuster soap opera. And I mean that as a compliment. Everything is amped up just enough to keep things constantly entertaining. Chad Taylor's script does a very good (but not perfect) job of juggling all of the big name talents and their characters throughout all the drama and races." - Glenn Magnus, Maxim

"Monaco is the slick racing melodrama that I never knew I wanted to see on the big screen. Not everyone in the cast can keep up with the talents like Isaac, Fassbender, Law and Weisz, but director Martin Scorsese's expert (and stylish) direction keeps everything nicely balanced and always fun." - Chrissy Lane, Manhattan Mercury

Plot: Sirens are blaring as a hush falls over the spectators at the Monaco Grand Prix. Some rush forward to get a closer look at what they see on the track, others stay back with tears in their eyes. An ambulance speeds its way through the track to finally arrive at the site of a fiery crash that is still being extinguished.

2 DAYS EARLIER

The buzz is in the air as Grand Prix weekend begins. The Formula 1 season nears its end as teams and drivers vy for positions in the final standings. Ten teams, two drivers each and two trophies - one for the individual driver with the most points and one for the team with the most points. This is a rare season where both have come down to the last day.

Adonis Racing. For the last decade, Adonis has been the perennial powerhouse in the sport. They currently sit in second in team standings but are within reach of the championship, which would mark their eleventh straight.

Christian Richenbacher (Michael Fassbender) walks on the beach and approaches a sun-bathing Diego Castillo (Antonio Banderas), both men smiling. Christian Richenbacher is a legend in the sport, having won six championships from 2009 to 2014. Over this time, Team Principal Diego Castillo has consistently pushed his team to peak performance. Christian removes his shirt and sits down next to Diego as they start to discuss the beautiful weather. Diego is a man who likes to get to the point and so he asks if Christian has made a decision about next season yet. Christian puts on his sunglasses and says that this is the biggest race of the year and so his mind is on that at the moment.

In a luxurious hotel, Silas (Henry Golding) and Anna (Sienna Miller) are having sex. Afterwards, an exhausted Silas collapses into the bed and looks out onto the Monaco skyline. Silas Song, F1’s top superstar. He has carried the baton from Christian to win the last six titles and, at his age, plenty more seem in his future. While Adonis is second in team standings, Silas is first in the driver standings with his fingertips on a seventh title - which would break his teammate’s achievement. He’s on top of the world at the moment.

On the lower level of the hotel, Marco Silva (Oscar Isaac) has headphones in, music blaring, as he furiously works out in the gym. Marco is looking to become the first American F1 Drivers’ Champion since 1976. He previously drove for Adonis early in his career but Richenbacher was always in his way from the championship. He switched teams to Team Honda, a relative newcomer to the sport with a lot of financial backing. But just as Marco went to take the spotlight for his own, his Adonis replacement - Silas - has now become his top rival and barrier to gold. He currently sits at second in the driver standings and needs to finish ahead of Silas to win the title.

On the streets of Monaco, Callum Forshaw (Harry Styles) drives at high speeds with his father Oliver (Jude Law) in the passenger’s seat. Oliver critiques how Callum makes a turn, prompting the son to assure that he knows what he’s doing. They both laugh. Oliver Forshaw is Team Principal for Team Honda. A former driver in his youth, he never made it to the big level but has channeled his energy into management. This has marked the debut season for Honda’s new #2: Callum Forshaw. With dashing good looks, a marketable personality, and an aggressive driving style to boot, Callum is already being touted as the sport’s next big superstar. Due to Callum’s overperformance and Richenbacher’s regression, Team Honda sits in first in the team standings and is one race away from finally ending Adonis Racing’s reign on top.

At a press conference, Monica Verducci (Rachel Weisz) stares out into a crowd of journalists. Her last name is emblazoned in red letters on the breast pocket of her polo. Italian automaker Verducci Motorsport is one of the oldest teams in Formula One. Multiple generations of Verducci’s have carried the mantle as the team accumulated a half century’s worth of success to become synonymous with top-level racing. Until recently. Global recessions (and mismanagement woes) have hit the automaker hard and they might be on their last legs. Monica, great-granddaughter of the team’s founder, recently took over Team Principal duties after her father’s death but vulture capitalists are circling.

Next to Monica sits Romain Petitjean (Louis Garrell), who is there to announce that he is renewing his contract with Verducci Motorsport. Romain is a journeyman driver who holds the dubious distinction for most races driven without a podium finish. But he has been loyal to Monica and Verducci and they have reciprocated that loyalty. When questions open up to reporters, one asks about the rumors that Verducci Motorsport may be sold to Indian billionaire Rudra Singhania. Monica, a bit flustered, quickly dismisses these rumors and says that she is committed to restoring the brand. Another reporter follows up by asking what she thinks finishing seventh in the team standings does to that once-proud legacy. She asks if he is questioning her ability to manage the team and the reporter says that surely the blame could be put somewhere. An angered Monica prematurely ends the press conference.

A private jet lands at a nearby airport as Rudra Singhania (Shah Rhuk Khan) emerges from it shortly after. His aides surround him and provide a weather forecast for the weekend’s race. Rudra is transported to the city where he meets with Vishwas Chaddha (Dev Patel) at a high-class restaurant. Singhania says that the weather looks good for Sunday and asks how the car is driving. Vishwas is an Indian driver who is Petitjean’s teammate at Verducci. Crucially, he has the backing of billionaire Singhania, who offered his financial assistance through sponsorship to the team in exchange for giving Vishwas a spot on the team. Some have questioned whether he is in F1 because of merit or only through connections, leaving him with a chip on his shoulder.

The fates of many are in the air heading into the biggest race weekend of the year. It is in the hands of the gods now.

SATURDAY

One day before the race. The teams all make their way to the Circuit de Monaco, an iconic street course that winds through the picturesque sights of stunning Monte Carlo. Today is qualifying, which will be crucial in determining the grid order for the start of Sunday’s race.

The weather is clear as day as the drivers take the track. Marco gets off to a flying start, setting the high mark early in qualifying. In his ear, Oliver lauds him for his performance and Marco comments that the car is feeling great. Callum, before he makes his run, tells his father that he wants to place better than Marco this weekend as it would be a statement that he is a real threat for the championship next season. Oliver is annoyed by his son’s tone, reminding Callum that this weekend is about securing the team title so he needs his drivers to work together. Callum puts his helmet on and gets in his car without responding.

In the Verducci garage, Monica receives intel that both cars look set to underperform compared to their competition. The stress forces her to go out back and smoke a cigarette for a moment of peacefulness. Romain goes out for qualifying and blows away expectations. He achieved the second fastest time after Marco. When Monica comes back to see this news, she is elated. Meanwhile, Vishwas experiences engine issues on his qualifying run which leaves him all the way down in last place. Rudra, while not saying anything verbally, looks to Monica disapprovingly after Vishwas’s car issues.

As Christian takes the track, the commentators reminisce on his past wins at the circuit and speculate on whether or not this will be his last race as no announcement has been made on next season. He puts in a lackluster performance, a few seconds behind the top performers. Diego’s short temper emerges as he lays into Christian given what’s on the line. He proceeds to give head nod to Silas as if to say “you know what to do”. And there’s a reason Silas is the top driver in the world at the moment. He dominates the track, achieving the fastest time in qualifying and putting himself in a prime position to retain his driver championship.

After qualifying, Silas and Marco are at the top of the grid in first and second. Romain’s surprising run has him in third while Callum is not far behind at fifth. Christian slots in at eighth - well below expectations - while Vishwas’s issues landed him the twentieth and final spot on the grid.

On the eve of the race, a classy banquet is held to honor the race’s legacy - bringing together all of the teams along with legends of the sport. Marco enters in a tuxedo and nervously surveys the crowd. He heads over to the bar, where he finds Silas ordering a drink. While they are rivals on the track, they make friendly conversation here until Anna, Silas’s date, arrives. Marco’s demeanor deteriorates. Anna gives him a kiss on the cheek and asks him how he has been. Through conversation, we learn that Anna is Marco’s ex-wife but has gotten with Silas since their split. Anna proposes a toast to a competitive race and may the best man win, with a sly smile on her face.

The passive aggressive stand-off between the three is interrupted by Oliver, Marco’s boss. Oliver tells Anna it is lovely to see her and she looks back at him with distrusting eyes. He jokingly asks Silas if he is ready to finally lose to Team Honda. Silas admits that winning his seventh title probably won’t feel as special as winning his first. “But neither of you know that feeling, do you?” he says. Oliver smiles back and says “fair play”.

Rudra and Vishwas make their entrance and this catches the eye of Diego. He makes his way over to the pair and begins to lay on the charm to them. Across the room, Monica sips on a drink as she sees this going down. It is clear that something feels off about it to her. Her spying is interrupted by the entrance of her mother, Elena Veducci (Sophia Loren). Monica is surprised to see her and Elena says that she wouldn’t miss an opportunity to honor her late husband’s legacy. Monica gives her mother a look, as if to say she is fully capable of doing that herself. Elena mentions that she saw Diego and Rudra talking and wondered what that was about. Elena reiterates her stance that they should not sell the team, which Monica agrees with. Monica excuses herself outside for a smoke.

At the bar, Christian and Romain are having a conversation as two of the longest-tenured drivers in F1. Christian congratulates Romain on his qualifying run and contract renewal. Romain says he would congratulate Christian - on retirement or renewal - but he doesn’t know his decision. Christian laughs and says that no one does. He then speaks in hushed tones and says that he was originally thinking this was his last race. He then looks over to Diego schmoozing Rudra and says that he doesn’t like that. He wants to go out on his own terms and feels like he has a few more seasons left in him. Romain cheers to that, as hopefully they’re both not done yet.

The chairman of Formula 1 takes the stage and begins a tribute to Gianni Verducci, who passed away nearly a year ago. He invites Elena to take the stage to say a few words about her late husband. As she talks, she mentions how proud Gianni was to pass down the brand to another generation with his daughter Monica. However, Monica’s seat is still empty.

Outside, Monica makes her way to a nearby alley for a contemplative smoke. When she arrives, she finds someone else already there: Callum. He is well-dressed but has not yet gone to the banquet as he is not in the mood. Monica is surprised to hear this, as she would’ve assumed he’d be happy after his good qualifying run. He says it wasn’t good enough as he wanted to finish ahead of Marco. She says that if he and Marco finish where they’re at then Team Honda win the team championship - something she wish she was in current position for. He says that he’s frustrated because his father doesn’t seem to respect him and maybe that he’s intentionally holding him back because of Oliver’s own failure to achieve driving stardom.

Monica laughs and says that if he wants to talk about legacy, he came to the right place. She has multiple generations of legacy to deal with given her last name. She asks if he wants to know a secret and he nods his head. She says that her father wanted his son to take over the Motorsport division but he didn’t want it. So she only got the gig because her brother didn’t want it. He whispers that it’s not exactly a secret as all of the tabloids were speculating that at the time. They both laugh. She rolls her eyes at the mention of the tabloids and how difficult they make it to be a woman in motorsport. And then there’s the financial woes and takeover rumors and it’s all so overwhelming. Her laughs turn it to tears as she quickly wipes them away in embarrassment. Callum slowly puts his arm around her to comfort her and tell her he understands. After a beat, they both look up and into each other’s eyes. Callum leans in for a kiss and Monica reciprocates.

A montage begins as we see them passionately kissing, taking the elevator up to her room and start to undress. Down at the banquet, Diego finishes up his conversation with Rudra and Vishwas by shaking both of their hands. Oliver looks around for his son and is curious about why he never arrived. Meanwhile, Christian joins Silas and Anna and Silas asks if his teammate is ready to bring his A-game tomorrow. Christian smiles and says Silas shouldn’t forget that Christian was the best driver in the world at one time and, who knows, maybe he still is. They shake hands and affirm their wish to get the job done. In the background, Marco is leaving the banquet early to get a good night’s sleep.

RACE DAY

Crowds descend upon Monte Carlo as the race is only hours away. We get glimpses of all drivers and team principals getting ready in the morning.

Callum pulls up to the Team Honda and can tell his father is upset. They let the tension simmer as Marco also shows up, looking completely locked in. In the Adonis garage, Diego and Christian go over analytics reports on the car and it becomes clear that Christian would have what it takes to be a Team Principal some day. Silas arrives with Anna in his arms and she kisses him good luck.

When Monica arrives at the Verducci garage, Elena is already there. Her mother gives her a hug and wishes the team well today. A reporter approaches Monica and asks for comment on the breaking news. Monica isn’t sure what they are talking about until she checks her phone and sees a notification from Sky Sports reporting that Vishwas Chaddha is signing with Team Adonis next season. While she seems angry in the moment, she composes herself and says that she is sad to see him leave but that she has a plan in place. The reporter follows up by asking if Verducci Motorsport can survive without Rudra’s sponsorship. She reiterates that she has a plan. Elena squeezes her daughter’s hand to show her support.

We see Marco and Silas go through their pre-race rituals and warm-ups. Vishwas is talking with Rudra when a reporter starts approaching. Rudra advises him to not give any responses at this time as they will have a big press conference next week. The reporter asks Vishwas about the move to Adonis and he says no comment. The frustrated reporter follows up with a question that asks: if people thought he wasn’t fit for F1 while at Verducci, surely that criticism will only increase on the level of a team like Adonis. This annoys Vishwas and he wants to answer but looks to Rudra and once again says no comment. Afterwards, Romain approaches and congratulates his teammate on the move. He says that, although they never achieved major success together at Verducci, he knows that Vishwas has what it takes to be a top star in F1. Vishwas shakes Romain’s hand, thanks him, and says that he sincerely hopes Romain can pull it off today.

Christian receives the news that he is being replaced next season and closes his phone, deciding not to confront Diego about it and focus on the race instead.

Diego, meanwhile, goes to get coffee and finds that Monica is also there. There is an awkward tension in the air as Diego asks Monica how she is doing. She says that his move was pretty scummy and that she thought better of him. Diego says he is sorry to hear that but that, while everyone might view sports as entertainment, to him it is a business. Monica responds by saying that, to her, it is family. They are interrupted by Oliver, who has also come to get coffee. Oliver says that he has heard reports that Christian isn’t retiring and that it seems like a dirty way to treat a respected legend. Diego says that maybe it is Oliver who should feel guilty as it his Honda’s success that necessitates Adonis’s changes. Oliver turns his attention to Monica and there is a different kind of tension in the air, given what happened between her and Callum last night. After a moment, it becomes clear that Oliver doesn’t know about that and he wishes them both luck today.

As a reminder, here are where things stand heading into the final race of the season. Team Honda holds a slim lead over Adonis Racing for the Constructors’ Championship, given to the team with the most points. In the Drivers’ Championship, Silas Song is in the lead and a finish in front of Marco Silva will solidify his record seventh championship.

Photographers flash their cameras as the load of celebrities pouring over the pre-race ceremonies as the drivers start to get into their cars. When Callum gets into his car, he radios into his dad’s headset and lets him know that he is going to win today. Oliver says that he hopes so but that, if push comes to shove, Callum cannot get in Marco’s way. Callum gives him the thumbs up. As Silas drives up to take his place at the start of the grid, he makes long eye contact with Marco.

Engines rev, crowds cheer, and the race begins.

At the front, Silas and Marco battle for first but Silas is able to slightly edge out his rival at the first turn. Romain's start is subpar as he drops a few spots after the green flag and finds himself fighting to stay in the top five. Christian, on the other hand, shows why he is considered a legend as he maneuvers his way to take jump from eighth to third, crucially ahead of Callum.

Halfway through the race, Oliver nervously paces in the Team Honda garage as he sees how close things are and with Silas in the lead. After a moment of thinking, he tells his assistant “undercut”. This strategy involves pitting earlier than the car in front of you so that you are on fresher tyres. Marco makes his pit stop but it takes longer than expected - causing him to fall behind both Christian and Callum. When he re-enters the track and quickly approaches Callum’s slower car, Callum blocks him from passing. Oliver is in Callum’s ear, demanding him to let Marco pass. Callum finally does and then goes to the pit lane himself. However, when he gets there, he takes off his helmet and gets out of his car. Oliver storms over to the car and asks what the hell he’s doing. This is sabotaging the team’s chance at a title. Callum informs his father that he is signing with Verducci Motorsport next season and walks off. In the Verducci garage, Monica sees this on her TV and can't help but to smile.

Silas makes his pit stop and it is the quickest one of the day. Near the back of the field, Vishwas is pushing through the field as best as he can. He is up to thirteenth, seven spots from where he started. With Callum out of the race, we are down to a three-horse race between Silas, Marco, and Christian. Romain has settled in fourth but doesn’t have the horsepower to close the gap with the bigger team drivers. If Silas and Christian both finish in the top three, Adonis wins the Constructors' Championship but Marco can still win the Drivers' Championship with a first-place finish.

With five laps to go, it is anyone’s ballgame. Marco checks his rearview mirror and worries that Christian is catching up to him, in which case the two Adonis cars would be able to block him from a top finish. As such, he goes as aggressive as ever to lay it all on the line. We reach the final lap as we look at each garage and the tension within. As the final corner approaches, Marco attempts to shoot the gap and go for the win. Silas effectively blocks him at first but then overcorrects as they complete the corner and spins out of control. His car slams into the nearby barrier at full speed, causing his car to burst into a ball of flames. Marco completes the final stretch and finishes in first with his old rival Christian finishing second. Romain finishes in third, his first podium finish, while Vishwas is able to reach the top ten.

Sirens are blaring as a hush falls over the spectators at the Monaco Grand Prix. Some rush forward to get a closer look at what they see on the track, others stay back with tears in their eyes. An ambulance speeds its way through the track to finally arrive at the site of a fiery crash that is still being extinguished. In the stands, Anna looks on in horror as does Diego in the garage. The crews work to extract Silas from the vehicle while the drivers who crossed the finish line exit their car to look on. Marco, instead of celebrating, runs to the stands to comfort Anna in this moment. She sinks into his arms as he reassures her that it will turn out OK.

After a delay, a somber podium ceremony is held as can finally celebrate his first Drivers' Championship. Oliver gives him a firm hug before saying he has personal issues he needs to solve. Monica congratulates Romain on his first podium finish and says that she hopes they see more of that next season. Runner-up Christian Richenbacher confidently smiles as he proved that he still has something in him. As the American national anthem plays, Marco abstains from celebrating with the champaign and instead raises the bottle in Silas's honor.

The camera slowly moves away from the city as a television report recaps the events of the day. Marco Silva became the first American driver in almost 50 years to win the F1 Driver's Championship as he also helped lead Team Honda to finally dethroning Adonis as Constructors' Champions. He will need a new teammate next year as reports coming out of the press are that Callum Forshaw is leaving his father behind and joining Team Verducci. Adonis will also see changes as Vishwas Chaddha replaces Christian Richenbacher, whose future remains a mystery. The latest word on Silas Song is that he is conscious but cannot feel his lower extremities. We all send out our best wishes to a legend of the sport.

THE DAY AFTER

Christian wakes up sore and checks his phone for the latest updates on Silas's condition. He leaves the hotel and his taxi arrives to take him to the airport. He tells the driver he's spent too much time in a car this weekend and, hell, his entire life. He's just going to walk. He begins striding down the streets of Monte Carlo as fans approach him for autographs and he seems at peace with himself.

Reaction: We knew this one was a difficult film to sell to audiences, but we still never imagined it would such a sizable box office bomb.

“Joanna Hogg gets her moment to shine in Akin and thanks to rookie Abbie Q’s smart script, we get a strong, topical and impressive movie about life and how extremism plays a large role in it. Add in a poignant showing by Michael Douglas and dare I say it, you have the best debut LRF has seen in some time.” - Mitchell Parker, New York Times

"Everything about the set-up of Akin felt contrived. It featured to half-hearted family mysteries of sorts, neither of which land with much of a bang. It will feel like more of a travelogue than an actual narrative film for much of the running time, wasting a good Michael Douglas performance - even though I found his character a pretentious bore." - George Overmyer, Baltimore Magazine

"Akin is not crazy long in actual running time, but it sure felt like it. I liked the duo of leads, Michael Douglas and Roman Griffin-Davis, but the film is so over-stuffed with details and plot threads that go nowhere, that it all overshadows the film's strengths." - Bobbie Gray-Smith, Sacramento Bee

Plot: In February 2018, Noé “Noah” Selvaggio (Michael Douglas) lives in New York City. He is a recently retired chemist, and he will be 75 in a few weeks. He’s Jewish and originally from Nice, France. When Noah was four years old, his family fled to the United States when the Nazis invaded. Noah’s mother, Margot, remained in France until 1944 to take care of her ailing grandfather. Noah’s mother died in 1992. Noah’s wife, Joan (Juliette Binoche), died a few years ago; Noah misses her and sometimes has an imaginary conversation with her alone. Noah’s younger sister, Fernande, a retired secretary, died a few years ago. Noah misses them all as he hasn’t a social life.

Noah plans on taking a trip to Nice for his birthday, as he hasn’t been there since he was four years old. Noah searches through some old belongings of his mother’s and finds some strange photographs. One depicts an old hotel, and one depicts a young boy. They have initials on the back, which Noah doesn’t recognize.

A little later, Noah receives a phone call from a social worker named Rosa Figueroa (Rita Moreno). She informs him that she’s searching for a temporary guardian for Noah’s grandnephew, 15-year-old Michael Young (Roman Griffin Davis). Michael’s father, Victor (Vincent Cassel), Noah’s nephew, was a drug addict who died of a drug overdose a few years ago. Michael’s most recent guardian was his maternal grandmother, who recently died. When police found Victor’s drug stash a few years ago, his wife Amber (Berenice Bejo), Michael’s mother, claimed that it was hers and pled guilty to the criminal charges, as Victor would’ve had to serve a much longer sentence before convictions. Amber is about halfway through a five-year sentence. Noah reluctantly agrees to meet with Rosa and Amber at the prison.

At the prison, he reluctantly agrees to take care of Michael for the next few weeks while Rosa looks for a more long-term situation for Michael, as Amber still has to serve a little over two years in prison. However, Noah can’t cancel his trip to Nice, so the only option is to take Michael on the trip with him.

The next day, Noah meets with Rosa and Michael in a government office so that Michael can acquire a passport. This is Noah’s first encounter with Michael. It soon becomes clear that Michael is a somewhat unruly, foul-mouthed child whose interests mainly include video games and social media. Since birth, Michael has attended a public school in New York City and has resided in a somewhat dangerous Brooklyn neighborhood.

After Noah and Rosa help Michael apply for a rush passport, the three of them go to Noah’s apartment home. Noah tells Michael a bit of himself, his life, and his deceased loved ones, but Michael does not appear very interested.

Noah and Michael continue to converse in Noah’s apartment. Noah talks about how he adopted Noah’s name after moving to America, as kids made fun of his French name, Noé. Michael admits to not relating, as kids at school often tease him about his mother being in prison. Michael asks why Noah has no children, and Noah replies that he never wanted any. Noah finds Michael’s rudeness alternately perturbing and refreshing. Michael remarks on how quiet Noah’s apartment building is; Michael says that when he lived in an apartment with his parents, the neighbors were generally loud and disruptive. Michael talks about his recently deceased grandmother, who often functioned as a de facto guardian. He says she was strict, but he loved her. Michael adds that she was religious and asks if Noah is religious. Noah says that he isn’t and focuses his faith in the realm of science, although he does not disdain religion. Noah tries to talk to Michael about chemistry, but Michael grows bored. Michael talks about a recent event in which a group of kids stole his skateboard. At the behest of his grandmother, Michael chose to let go of his anger. Also, he did not call the police, as doing so is considered weak in his community.

That evening, as Noah prepares dinner, he tells Michael some of his family histories, such as how Noah’s father lost a hand while serving as a soldier in World War One. The following day, Noah sees that Michael had trouble sleeping, likely due to the stress of the many recent shifts in Michael’s situation. Noah goes over travel plans with Michael. Noah shows Michael the mysterious photographs Noah found in his mother’s old belongings. Michael helps Noah scan the old hotel photo and insert the image into an internet search. The search engine states that the hotel is the Hotel Excelsior in Nice. Noah switches their hotel arrangements to be in that building. Later that day, Noah takes Michael to an art museum. The museum features Noah’s grandfather, Pierre Personnet, who used the nom de plume, Père Sonne. Pierre was a renowned photographer, and Noah donated the photographs to the museum after Margot died in 1992. Unfortunately, Michael shows little interest in the photographs.

Noah and Michael arrive at LaGuardia Airport for their flight. Michael has never been on an airplane or in an airport before. Noah struggles to manage Michael through the various travel tasks, such as the security check. Noah also continues to try to bond with Michael, but Michael appears to have few interests outside of using his phone to play video games and surf the internet. Noah reads a book about his grandfather’s life and works on the plane. Meanwhile, having no internet access on the plane, Michael reluctantly reads a book of interesting facts that Noah purchased for him. They converse a little on the plane, and Michael gradually shows some interest in science and history as Noah talks about those subjects.

As the plane ride continues, Noah shows Michael a photo of Pierre. In the photo, Pierre is wearing a fedora. Noah reveals that it is the same fedora that Noah is currently wearing. Michael is mildly impressed by this revelation. Noah also explains that Pierre’s no de plume—Père Sonne—sounds like the French word that means both ‘person’ and ‘no one.’ Also, Sonne sounds like the French word for the sound that a bell makes. The plane eventually lands at Charles de Gaulle airport in Paris. They have a brief layover. Noah and Michael briefly discuss politics. Noah says that the modern ‘alt-right’ white supremacists are the same as the Nazis of past eras; both groups are devoid of morality and compassion. They soon board their flight to Nice. They fly from Paris to Nice in a small plane. Before going to the hotel in Nice, they walk down the city streets for a short period. Noah notices that Michael takes a lot of photos with his phone.

As they ride in a taxi to the hotel, Noah talks to Michael about Noah’s family and local history. They arrive at the Hotel Excelsior, and Noah again wonders why Margot took a photo of it. Noah takes a nap in the hotel room. After he awakes, Noah and Michael leave for the hotel to venture out into the city. Because they are in the southern region of France, it is relatively warm outside, although it is February. They stop at a restaurant for a late lunch. Noah asks Michael what Michael’s grandmother cooked for him. Michael says that their options were limited due to financial constraints. Michael’s grandmother relied on government food stamps. After they leave the restaurant, Michael notices a poster that has been vandalized. Noah explains that the poster depicts right-wing French politician Marine Le Pen, whom many people agree has dangerously fascistic ideas.

They pass where famous dancer Isadora Duncan died in a car accident. Noah explains the incident and says that Pierre often photographed famous people, including Isadora Duncan. Noah then talks about the complicated political history of Nice, as many different countries and kingdoms fought to control it over the centuries. Noah then thinks about the photo of a young boy he found in Margot’s belongings. The photo had the initials R.J. on it. He wonders if perhaps Margot secretly had another child. Back at the hotel, Noah helps Michael send an e-mail to Amber via a pay-per-message system designed for communicating with inmates. Noah realizes that he has grown somewhat fond of Michael, and he wonders if Michael will ever want to visit him in the future. Noah and Michael soon find a plaque in front of the Hotel Excelsior that states it was used as a Nazi base. Nervously, Noah begins to wonder if maybe Margot had a sexual relationship with a Nazi to arrange protection for herself. He tries to dismiss this theory as he has no objective evidence.

In the evening, Noah looks through the journal Michael is supposed to be writing. Michael is taking time off school for the trip, so the journal counts towards school credit. Noah sees that Michael has primarily just drawn humorous, gruesome drawings of things tangentially related to their experiences on the trip. They have local seafood for dinner, and Noah makes Michel laugh by making a somewhat crass joke. Michael briefly talks about his family, like his uncle Cody. Cody is paralyzed below the waist due to a ricochet bullet fired by an armed robber. Noah briefly reflects on how living in neighborhoods with high crime rates is kind of like living in a city under siege during wartime. As Noah struggles to fall asleep that night, he wonders if Margot could have secretly worked as an informer for the Nazis. He tries to dismiss the idea, as it does not square with his mother’s knowledge as a kind and moral person.

Noah and Michael awake in the hotel room the following day. Noah proposes various activities that they could do that day, but Michael shows no interest in them. They leave the hotel and pass a school with a historical plaque; the plaque states that students from that school fought and died for the French Resistance. Noah tries not to think about how Margot was possibly a Nazi informer as they tour the area. He tries to think if anyone still in Nice would have known his mother. As Noah and Michael continue to confront the many horrors of the local history, Noah thinks aloud about religion and science and how they help people gain some meaning and solace in the face of human chaos.

Noah then talks about war rations and how they are like the government food stamps on which Michael’s grandmother subsisted. Michael then compares the violence in Nazi-occupied Nice to the violence in his Brooklyn neighborhood. Noah then says that many Resistance fighters used aliases, ‘nom de guerre.’ Michael speculates that maybe some of the initials on the photos may be wartime aliases, and The astuteness of that theory strikes Noah. Noah locates a local archivist, Monsieur Benoit (Jean Reno), who identifies two people in Margot’s photographs as members of the Marcel Network, a group based in Nice that helped forge documents for the French Resistance. The network mainly used those documents to transport children to safety, usually hiding them in monasteries. Benoit agrees to do more research and contact Noah. Later in the day, Noah and Michael begin to grow irritated, and Michael grows more unruly. Back at the hotel, Noah wonders, with horror, if Margot had helped Nazis track and arrest members of the Marcel Network.

During breakfast the following day, Noah and Michael discuss morbid subjects related to death, and Michael appears fascinated. Noah goes swimming at the nearby beach while Michael watches. Michael is ecstatic when he films Noah accidentally losing his balance in the water.

Noah and Michael eat lunch at a restaurant, and Noah looks through the book of Pierre’s work. He shows Michael a series of photos Pierre took of various famous people. Eventually, he stopped taking photos of famous people, and he focused on taking pictures of regular people in everyday situations to celebrate the everyday. As Noah explains, Michael shows a genuine interest in Pierre’s work. They visit the ruins of an old gladiatorial arena and look in a small, adjacent museum. They then visit a building that used to be a base of the Marcel Network. Michael impulsively begins climbing the fence that surrounds the building. Noah panics and tells Michael to come down, which Michael eventually does. Michael then produces a replica gladiator helmet from his backpack, which he stole from the small museum. Noah, exasperated, says that they will return it later.

Back at the hotel, Michael shows Noah some photographs of his mother in prison. One shows Amber’s tattoo of the letter ‘M’ for Michael. Michael reveals a similar tattoo of the letters F.O.E., which stands for ‘family over everything.’ Noah then impresses Michael with a science trick in which he uses absorbent chemicals to make water disappear. They then go to a circus, and Noah and Michael have a surprisingly good time.

Noah does more internet research on the Hotel Excelsior and sees that Nazis sometimes tortured people there. Later in the day, he receives a phone call from the archivist to whom he spoke a couple of days prior. The archivist says that there was a French resistance fighter named Mare Zabel. Her initials—M.Z.—match one of the sets of initials on Margot’s photos. Marie Zabel helped the Marcel network with forgeries. There is no record of Marie Zabel after World War II. Noah tells this information to Michael, and they soon realize that ‘Marie Zabel’ was likely a nom de guerre used by Margot, as her middle name was Isabelle. They are glad to realize that Margot likely worked for the Resistance, not the Nazis.

Later, back at the hotel, Noah asks Michael some more questions about Amber’s legal case. Noah then does some internet research and soon deduces that Michael’s father (Victor) was likely a ‘CI,’ which stands for Confidential Informant or Criminal Informant. A CI is a convicted criminal whom the police coerce into reporting on other criminals to lower the CI’s criminal sentences, etc. CI’s is a widespread practice but is often protested as immoral. Noah realizes that after the police caught Victor—a convicted drug dealer-turned \-CI—with a stash of drugs, the police decided to pin the charges on Amber so that they could continue to use Victor as a CI. Noah decides not to broach the subject with Michael or Amber. Noah begins to rethink his idea that it is good to always trust the police in America.

Noah and Michael awake the next day and meet with Coco (Jenny Gago), who Noah had known when they were young. Noah’s family had hired Coco’s mother to clean their house regularly. Coco recalls that, shortly before the end of the war, Margot was forcibly brought into the Hotel Excelsior by Nazis, apparently for some punishment. However, Margot never spoke to anyone about what had happened. Later, Noah and Michael confer about this new information. They realize that the Nazis likely tortured her for information. She may have even given them information, which might explain why she never spoke about her participation in the Resistance to anyone throughout the rest of her life. Fortunately, her torture occurred close enough to the time of the Nazis being driven out of France that even if she had given information, it would not have helped to Nazis.

Later, Noah and Michael participate in some of the public celebrations of Carnival, Nice’s big annual festival. They join a crowd to watch a big parade. Noah is shocked when his fedora (which he inherited from Pierre) becomes stained due to the general detritus and debris of the celebration. Noah and Michael soon become embroiled in their angriest, most fervent argument so far. Michael runs away in anger and frustration, and Noah cannot find him in the crowd. Noah goes to a police station to report Michael’s disappearance. Noah then returns to the hotel and finds Michael there. They leave the hotel to eat. However, Noah reprimands Michael for running, and they begin to argue again. Michael runs away once again, and this time, he jumps into the nearby ocean. Noah retrieves him, and they return to the hotel to dry off. They are both calmer now, and they begin to reconcile. Noah realizes that it is past midnight and now his sixtieth birthday.

They awake in the morning. Noah thinks about Victor again and realizes that he may have been murdered by people who discovered he was a CI. Noah decides to keep this idea to himself. Noah and Michael visit a nearby cemetery to see the graves of Noah’s maternal grandparents, Pierre and Isabelle. At Michael’s suggestion, they take a picture with the graves. Noah looks at other pictures on Michael’s phone and sincerely says that Michael is a good photographer. Later, Noah receives an e-mail from Benoit, the archivist, about René Jacques, the boy in one of Margot’s photos. His real name is Lucien Demetz (Alain Delon), but his forged documents during the war said René Jacques. Lucien is now an older man, and Noah and Michael visit him in a nursing home. Lucien manages to communicate that Margot did indeed help him escape Nazi-occupied France when he was a boy by helping to forge documents for him. On the last day of the trip, Noah proposes the idea of continuing to be Michael’s guardian until Amber is released. Michael appears to approve of the idea, and as they go to the airport to return to New York, Noah feels grateful and fulfilled.

As a new morning begins on Oakwood Elementary, a car rolls into the parking lot carrying a nervous looking girl. Her dad and mother reassure that it’s going to be great and that she’ll love it in Oakwood before sending her off her way. She looks around the area, slowly walking up the steps before coming across Marcie (Miriam Spumpkin). Despite being taken aback by her spirited introduction, the new girl introduces herself as Anna (Mykal-Michelle Harris).

From there, Marcie takes Anna into Oakwood Elementary and introduces her to some of her other friends including Pablo (Ravi Cabot-Conyers), D.J (Brayden Newburn) and Kairi (Sasaki Miyu) before finally entering Mr. Roberts’s class (Robert Sweatmon). As a new school day begins, Mr. Roberts introduces everyone to Anna and gives her an introduction to ‘their greatest friend’, Barney (Dean Wendt), a purple T-Rex plush toy. Anna sits by Marcie, confused by everyone’s intrigue over him.

At recess, the kids meet up with Matthew (Roger Dale Floyd) and Gabi (Alejandra Howard), older siblings of Marcie and Pablo, and learn of Anna’s first day. Matthew suggests doing something to welcome her and the gang all begin to spread various ideas. Within a flash, the Barney plush toy springs into action, much to the surprise of everyone except Marcie. As it turns out, by spreading their imagination, they managed to bring Barney to life.

With Barney now by their side, everyone begins to work out ways to welcome their new friend, all in their various different styles. Matthew with his love of sports, Kairi embracing her love of art with paint, D.J building a volcano out of things from Barney’s bag, Pablo and Gabi using the power of music and Marcie trying to start up a game of freeze tag. Along the way, they’re introduced to B.J (Patty Wirtz) and his little sister Baby Bop (Julie Johnson) and almost encounter Mr. Roberts (Barney managed to make himself invisible before he sees him).

Eventually, the kids realize that the best way to introduce themselves to Anna. As she sadly sits on the swing, Anna is officially introduced to the others and Barney and learns of their interests. The group combines all their interests into one gigantic play date, ending with Anna enjoying everything they do, even revealing her own thing, flying kites. Now with a whole new group of friends, Anna thanks everyone for being with her today. With recess almost over, Barney reassured everyone that he’ll be there whenever they’re using their imagination. As the kids head back to school, Anna looks at Barney, now back to being a plush toy and realizes that things are going to be just fine at her new school.

.

"The entire concept - and especially how Barney is portrayed and utilized - is confusing and bizarre. It feels long has too many redundant characters. Writer Jacob Jones clearly means well, but I don't see things taking off well after this well-crafted but ill-conceived pilot." - Cal Crowe, Washington Globe

"Barney is not a character that has aged well. He now feels more creepy than friendly. Even with the wise decision to switch from live-action to animation, I cannot fathom what the audience for this show is. Barney was always more of a character for toddlers, but here we have a show set around a group of kids that are older than those that might watch." - Jeff Stockton, The Roundup

"I don't know if anyone really thought Barney needed a comeback, but this shows why that character is timeless. I might not be a fan of the character, but I know kids will watch this show if their parents turn it on based on this pilot." - Jessie Wicke, Voxxx

Plot: After another beautiful day at school, Marcie (Miriam Spumpkin) is skipping home with the Barney plushie.. As is protocol during the weekend, one kid gets to go home with Barney (Dean Wendt) for the weekend, this week happens to be her turn! She meets up with Anna (Mykal-Michelle Harris) and the two play for a little bit before Barney comes to life and joins them.

After their game, Anna heads home for the day, and Barney and Marcie meet up with DJ (Brayden Newbern) and Matthew (Roger Dale Floyd). They’re going over to Kairi’s (Sasaki Miyu) house to check up on her as well as bring her the math homework for the week. The reason being is that Kairi has caught the flu. Wanting to help out, Barney and Marcie join them.

Inside her room, Kairi sadly lies on her bed, coughing and sneezing away when her friends and Barney stop by. Kairi expresses her sadness over being sick, especially since she was supposed to go to the carnival this weekend. Feeling sorry for her, Matthew, Marcie, and DJ discuss what to do, coming up with a great idea. If Kairi can’t go to the carnival, they can bring the carnival to her! Even better, they can use the math homework as inspiration.

When Barney asks Kairi if she’d like to go to the carnival, he whisks everyone to a magical place called the carnival of numbers. All throughout the day, the kids and Barney have fun counting forward and backward, especially when BJ (Patty Wirtz) stops by to show everyone how to do the Number Limbo! The kids also learn how to add when getting popcorn, subtract when playing musical chairs and how to use mathematics in everyday life, such as waiting in line to get on the roller coaster. By the end of the day, Kairi is feeling much better, having enjoyed a wonderful time with her friends. But then, any day can be fun when you share it with the people you love.

As they return to real life, Barney returns to being a plush doll. Marcie hands him over to Kairi to keep him company for the night. Overjoyed, Kairi thanks Marcie for her gesture and wishes her goodnight. With Barney by her side, Kairi begins to work on her math homework.

It’s a special day for the Oakwood kids. They’re going on a field trip to the park with Mr. Roberts (Robert Sweatmon) and Ms. Lloyd (Erica Rhodes). As the class arrives at the park, the kids all look around, excited to see all the amazing sights and sounds. One thing especially catches Kairi’s (Sasaki Miyu) eye. A group of ducks swimming on the pond. Ms. Lloyd and Mr. Roberts explain that it’s called a raft of ducks, sort of like a family. Seeing the ducks reminds Mr. Roberts of a song about six little ducks and he along with the others begins to sing.

After the song, Mr. Roberts and Ms. Lloyd gather their groups. Marcie (Miriam Spumpkin), Pablo (Ravi Cabot-Conyers), DJ (Brayden Newbern and Kairi will be spending the day with Mr. Roberts while Gabi (Alejandra Howard), Matthew (Roger Dale Taylor), Anna (Mykal-Michelle Harris), and Barney (Dean Wendt) get to be with Ms. Lloyd. When Barney comes to life, it leads to a funny moment where Ms. Lloyd and Barney meet for the first time, Ms. Lloyd being amused and amazed to find that he comes to life whenever people use their imagination.

Barney isn’t alone as Baby Bop (Julie Johnson) comes by, accompanied by her brother B.J. (Patty Wirtz). Like with Kairi, Baby Bop too is interested in the family of ducks but becomes confused when Ms. Lloyd mentions that they’re a raft or a team of ducks. Barney explains that every animal is a part of a different type of family, sort of like how people have their own families. To show this, Barney whisks them away to a farm where they see some of the many animals that live there, including a herd of cattle, a team of horses, a drift of pigs, and a clowder of cats. During this time, Mr. Roberts and his group also learn about the various ways animal families spend time together and how similar their lives are. As Ms. Lloyd’s group heads back from the farm, Baby Bop realizes that families are everywhere and can come from both animals and humans. At the end of the day though, Barney finds that the best kind of family is the one that cares for each other, sharing their day with the people they love.

As the kids say goodbye to Barney, Matthew asks Ms. Lloyd not to tell Mr. Roberts about him as they don’t know how he’d respond. Ms. Lloyd says that the secret is safe with her. When Mr. Roberts’ group returns, Ms. Lloyd does a great job covering up what they really did, using typical park events while mixing in what they learned as a ploy. Happy to see that everyone has learned so much, Mr. Roberts has one more surprise for everyone. Free pizza at the pavilion! Excited, all the kids head off to the pavilion to enjoy their lunch and the rest of the day.

Voice Cast:
Dean Wendt .... Barney the Dinosaur

Roger Dale Floyd .... Matthew
Mykal-Michelle Harris .... Anna
Ravi Cabot-Conyers .... Pablo
Alejandra Howard .... Gabi

It’s another fine day in Oakwood Elementary and Marcie (Miriam Spumpkin), Anna (Mykal-Michelle Harris), and Pablo (Ravi Cabot-Conyers) are sharing drawings of their favorite animals. Marcie’s favorite animal is a dolphin, while Anna’s favorite is the chameleon. As for Pablo? He’s got a greater love. The tiger! When the bell rings, the three friends go off to recess where the three play tag, Pablo pretending to be a tiger. Barney comes to life around this time and becomes awestruck by how similar Pablo is to an actual tiger.

Once their game is done, however, a wild occurrence ensues when a chihuahua comes into the school playground. Pablo goes into a panic and bumps into his big sister Gabi (Alejandra Howard). In hysterics, Pablo tries to explain what just happened when the dog owner comes in and apologizes for the mishap, saying that her dog got away from her leech and ran away. Still startled, Gabi helps Pablo back inside the classroom. All alone, Pablo begins to think about what happened, realizing that a lot of people paid attention to him when the dog came up to him and hatches a scheme.

Throughout the day, Pablo constantly calls out for help, saying that a dog is coming after him. First, it’s a pitbull, then it’s a rottweiler, finally, it’s a german shepherd. But when he tries it a fourth time, Pablo finds that nobody is coming to his aid. Confused, he heads outside and finds that everyone is ignoring him. When Pablo tries to explain that there’s a Great Dane in the classroom, Marcie and Anna call him on it, considering it yet another lie. Dejected, Pablo heads into the classroom. Concerned, Barney and Gabi follow him and ask him what’s wrong. Pablo sadly explains that he only did the dog bit because he liked the attention and he didn’t want to tell them that he’s afraid of dogs, claiming to have been bit by one in the arm. It’s there Barney tells Pablo the story of the Boy who Cried Wolf, a story about a boy who lied about a wolf only for it to come back to bite him when there was one. The moral of the story? It’s better, to be honest, the first time rather than keep a lie going.

Pablo comes out of the classroom with Gabi and Barney and apologizes to Marcie and Anna for his antics, admitting to his fear of dogs. Marcie and Anna forgive him, Marcie noting that it’s funny Pablo mention it cause her parents are bringing their dog over when they come to pick her and Matthew (Roger Dale Floyd up). The two agree to meet up with Marcie’s pet dog soon. In the meantime, the four friends play together for the rest of recess. As everyone heads inside, Barney and Mr. Roberts almost meet up for the first time, only for Gabi to realize what might happen and force Barney to hide in a locker until class ends.

After school, Anna, Gabi, and Pablo meet up with Marcie and Matthew’s parents, and Pablo is introduced to their pet dog Bingo. Despite being nervous at first, Pablo gingerly extends a hand to Bingo and manages to pet him. With his fear of dogs now conquered, Barney tells Pablo how proud they are of him for being brave and honest and that both are traits for being a great friend, sort of like a dog. Afterward, the kids head off for the afternoon, Barney now back to being a plush doll and on top of a locker.

Dean Wendt .... Barney the Dinosaur
Miriam Spumpkin .... Marcie
Roger Dale Floyd .... Matthew
Mykal-Michelle Harris .... Anna
Brayden Newburn .... DJ
Julie Johnson .... Baby Bop
Sasaki Miyu .... Kairi

It’s another fine afternoon in recess and Matthew (Roger Dale Floyd) and DJ (Brayden Newbern) are busy playing on the swings. They both agree Such a fun day like this deserves to be spent with a good friend, like each other! When Barney (Dean Wendt) comes to life by the picnic table, He joins in the festivities!

All seems to be normal when the three pick up a heated argument. Before they can rush over to the scene, a fuming Marcie (Miriam Spumpkin) storms over to Matthew, declaring that she’ll never speak to Kairi (Sasaki Miyu) again. While Matthew tends to his little sister, DJ and Barney rush over to the scene of the argument where they find Kairi crying by a tree.

After Barney, DJ and Matthew manage to calm the two sides down, they explain their sides of the story. Kairi claims that Marcie lost a toy she borrowed from her, but Marcie says that she didn’t mean to lose it, admitting that she snapped at Kairi when she accused her of losing it. Barney tries to mediate a ceasefire between the two, but Kairi refuses to talk to Marcie and vice-versa.

With recess over, Barney is forced to stay outside while the kids go to class. Still wanting to help his friends however, he sneaks inside the school and enters the hallway, finding BJ (Patty Wirtz) and Baby Bop (Julie Johnson) arguing among themselves. As it turns out, they heard about the fight between Kairi and Marcie and have taken different sides, BJ on Kairi’s side and Baby Bop on Marcie’s. Barney however feels that both sides can be right and hopes that Matthew and DJ can solve things.

Unfortunately in Mr. Roberts’s (Robert Sweatmon) class, Matthew and DJ come no closer to solving the problem. Not even a song by Mr. Roberts can help. It only gets worse when snack time comes and DJ realizes that he accidentally ate all the carrot sticks he was going to share with Matthew. This causes Matthew to get mad at DJ. It’s around this time Anna (Mykal-Michelle Harris) arrives at school.

When Barney explains the crisis to Anna, Anna asks Barney why he can’t come in class. Given the predicament regarding Mr. Roberts never seeing Barney in this state, the kids find it too risky. Anna however has a plan and she enters class. She tries to talk to Kairi and Marcie, listening to both sides before organizing a search. After some time, Anna manages to find Kairi’s toy in Marcie’s cubby. As it turned out, Marcie forgot to take it home!

Overjoyed to have her toy back, Kairi thanks Anna for her help and apologizes to Marcie for getting mad at her. Marcie forgives her and apologizes for losing her toy. Seeing Marcie and Kairi forgive each other warms Matthew and DJ’s hearts and they make amends too.

After school, the gang meet up with an ecstatic Barney, Baby Bop and BJ and play with Kairi’s toy, a teddy bear! With Kairi and Marcie now friends again, Barney reminds us that though friends may have their fights, when we take the time to understand each other, we can make up and be friends again. When everyone says their goodbyes, Marcie and Kairi agree to have a tea party at Marcie’s house, inviting Kairi’s teddy bear as a guest.
