Genre: Biography/Sports

Plot: 1962 in Kobe, Japan
Phil Knight (Andrew Garfield) is nervously sitting in a conference room surrounded by japanese officials from the shoe brand Onitsuka Tiger. They are willing to work with him and ask him about the name of his company and the address so they know where to send the shoes at. Phil hesitates and randomly thinks of his parent's basement where alot of his medals from track running that have blue ribbons are kept. "...Blue Ribbon.....Blue Ribbon Sports is the name of my company," he answers while writing the address of his parent's house in Beaverton, Oregon to a sheet of paper in front of him and gives it to one of the business men.

Back in his hotel room, he writes a letter to his father, asking him to send $50 to Onitsuka, before continuing his world travel.

February 1963
Phil returns to his parent's house and is greeted by his parents and two sisters. They are very happy to see him and tease him for his scruffy beard that he grew while travelling the world. Of course Phil asks his father (Nick Searcy) if the shoes from Onitsuka Tiger had arrived, but his father tells him that they didn't. After being welcomed back home by his family, Phil sits down and starts to write a letter to the Onitsuka headquarters in Kobe. His father tells him that he thinks this whole "shoe thing" is nonsense and Phil should rather do something that is more reasonable.

Phil pretty quickly gets a letter back from Onitsuka where they tell him that they have some shipping problems but that his shoes will arrive soon. To please his father he finally shaves off his beard and starts a job as an accountant while waiting for the shoes.

In January 1964 the shoes finally arrive and Phil is in awe with the quality of the shoes. He sends a pair to his old track coach from college Bill Bowerman (J.K. Simmons) to see what he thinks about them. They meet up for dinner where Bowerman tells Phil that he wants to work with him. They plan on making a $1000 order. Phil has to ask his father again.

But his father, without any suprise, still isn't a fan of Phil's idea and doesn't want to spent another $500 on it. He tells Phil that nobody cares about some shoes from Japan. Phil's mother overhears the whole conversation and starts to look for her wallet, she pulls out just enough money to purchase herself a new pair of Onitsuka Tigers' Limber Up model. She gives Phil the money and puts on the shoes while giving her husband a reproachful look, who seems to get the message. He sighs but finally agrees to give Phil the needed $500.

This time the shipping doesn't take as long and Phil starts to market his shoe in sporting goods stores but the salesmen tell him that the market is overblown. He starts to go on track meets to try to get his shoe recognized. And it works! Coaches and athletes love the shoe and Phil is either selling them a pair out of his trunk or taking on orders. The business starts booming and people are calling Phil or start to show up at his parents house just to buy a pair of Onitsuka Tigers. But of course his supply is limited and he quickly runs out of pairs to sell. Having to make another order to Onitsuka, without asking his dad for money again, Phil decides to ask a bank for a loan.

At a track meet he meets his old college buddy Jeff Johnson (Paul Dano). Johnson has already heard from Phil's business and congratulates him on the recent success he had. Phil asks him if he would be interested in selling Onitsuka Tigers around the California area and Johnson agrees as he is about have a kid and could need some extra money.

In April 1965 Johnson writes that he quit his job and now wants to work full-time for Blue Ribbon but Phil tells him it's not possible as their cash flow is negative and he owes the bank $11.000. After many exchanged letters and a lot of begging, Phil gives in and makes Johnson Blue Ribbon's first full-time employee.

The bank calls Phil and tells him that they think that Blue Ribbon is growing too quick in relation to their equity. Phil reports them that they have to grow quick to convince Onitsuka Tiger that he is the right guy. Phil is able to persuade them for another loan again and again.

Olympics 1964 Tokyo, Japan
Bill Bowerman is coaching the US-American track and field teams from the sidelines. Most of his runners are wearing Adidas. Mr. Onitsuka (Hiro Kanagawa) founder of Onitsuka Tiger is also in attendence and invites Bowerman to the Onitsuka Tiger offices. Bowerman and his wife are welcomed by the officials of Onitsuka and he and Mr. Onitsuka have a great discussion about running and what a great shoe should provide to help the runner get his best performance. Mr. Onitsuka only speaks very broken english but understands really well and he gets along pretty well with Bowerman. They also joke that at the next olympics they hope to see more runners in Tigers than this time.

Back in America Bowerman works on optimizing the Tigers. He disassembles the shoes into individual parts and brings them back together with slight changes. A freshman from the Oregon run and track team must serve as a test dummy. Bowerman uses his wife's waffle iron to try and make his own sole. He experiments with different materials to see what works best for his so-called "waffle sole". Suddenly the waffle iron starts to produce a lof of smoke and Bowerman knows he destroyed it.

1966
Phil Knight moved out of his parent's house in to a small apartment, where he again reads those endless letters from Johnson. Johnson reports on the new store they just opened in Santa Monica with him at the helm. Phil also learns that Johnson is getting a divorce and he is also informed that the Onitsuka Tiger distributor for the east coast is also doing business with running shoes in their area. Phil decides to visit Johnson in California

Johnson's apartment is filled with sneakers but the highlight of his apartment is a big octopus with the name Stretch, that he is keeping as a pet. Johnson tells Phil that he is really passionate about this job and it keeps him sane, especially in those rough times he is going through right now. Together they discuss what they are doing with their problem with the east coast distributor. Phil decides that he once again has to fly to Japan.

Things have changed in Japan. A guy named Kitami (Ken Yamamura) is now the spokesperson and Phil suggests that Blue Ribbon Sports should be the lone distributor of running shoes in the USA. Kitami tells him that it wouldn't work because Blue Ribbon only is located at the west coast. Phil lies to him and tells them they recently expanded to the east coast. Kitami believes him and gives him a 3 year contract for exclusive distribution rights in the US.

Phil thinks that Johnson is the only one who is crazy and energetic enough to go to the east coast, but is afraid to tell him. He decides to do the easier part first, which is finding someone to replace Johnson in California. Soon after finding someone, Phil gets a call from Johnson who is devastated. The replacement was already scouting his new workplace, while Johnson was still in store and that way Johnson learned about his transfer to the east coast. Phil tells him he didn't want him to find it out like this, but he feels like Johnson is the only one capable of this task. Phil even lets him decide between a couple options he has as locations. Johnson still isn't happy about it but chooses to go to Boston.

In the meantime Phil brings in new employees. Among others Bob Woodell (Finn Whitrock), who Bowerman recommended to him. Woodell is a former top athlete who is paralyzed from the waist down after an accident and now sits in a wheelchair. Woodell comes across very reserved and maybe even depressed but Phil likes him, he feels like Woodell has a chip on his shoulder and wants to prove himself.

Bowerman is still experimenting with shoes and submits suggestions to Onitsuka. They send back the finished model and ask Bowerman how they should name him. Bowerman's first suggestion is "Aztec" as a wink to the upcoming  '68 olympics in Mexico City but it gets declined because of a similar named model from Adidas. Bowerman asks Phil who the guy who defeated the Aztecs was named - Cortez. The Onitsuka Tiger Cortez was born.

To concentrate more on Blue Ribbon, Phil gives up his job as an account and starts to teach part time at the Portland State University. On the first day he notices a girl in the front row with the name of Penny (Erin Moriarty). In spite of her shyness she can shine with extraordinary school work. Phil gives her a job as an accountant  at Blue Ribbon and also asks her on a date.

They get together and their relationship gets pretty intense pretty quick. When Phil has to go on a longer trip to Japan, they decide to get married.

Kitami and Mr. Onitsuka announce that they will come to the US and would like to visit the office of Blue Ribbon Sports in Portland. Phil panics at the thought of them seeing their tiny old office. He makes it his mission to find a new one before they arrive.

Phil and Woodell are visiting a couple potential new offices. Most offices turn out to be even worse than their current one, but the two of them don't let it drag their mood down and most nights they end up in a bar, drinking and having fun. The conversation starts to turn serious when Woodell talks about the accident that has put him in a wheel chair. Woodell confesses that it put him in a deep depression and he still hasn't give up the thought that one day he will be able to walk again and live a normal life. He thanks Phil for giving him a chance to proof himself in working for Blue Ribbon. Even though Woodell mentions that it's pretty ironic that a man who isn't able to walk, is selling running shoes. To end the evening they go to Phil's place where his pregnant wife Penny has already cooked for them.

Not soon after that they find a decent and affordable office in Tigard in the south of downtown Portland.

They are $20.000 short on the next shipment and Phil knows that there is no way that the bank is giving them more. They plan on selling 30% of the company to end their financial struggle for now. Their plan is to run a couple ads and they want $2 per share. But almost nobody shows interest and they don't get alot of calls.

To their luck Woodell's parents decide to step in and help the boys out. Phil visits them on his self because Woodell is on a business trip. They don't only give them the needed $5.000 but also $3.000 more. They don't seem like they are really wealthy, so Phil is sure that this must be their life savings. Phil asks them a couple times if they are sure they really want to give it to them and can't believe they don't even want shares or anything in exchange. They tell him they believe in their son's company, Phil thanks them and takes the money.

In the meantime a once-in-a-lifetime run and track talent emerges from the University of Oregon under coach Bowerman. It’s Steve Prefontaine (Harry Styles) but most just call him Pre. Phil is a frequent visitor of his races and the crowd loves him. Phil describes him as as a rockstar. It’s not only his winning rate that makes him great but also his unmatched confidence and swagger that make the whole crowd chant „Pre Pre Pre!“. In June 1970 he appears on the cover of Sports Illustrated by the age of only 19. Phil feels like Pre embodies exactly what their company should be like and it inspires him to be more than just a distributor of someone elses shoes. The only thing Phil doesn’t like about him are his Adidas running shoes he is wearing.

Phil wants to work with Nissho Iwai a japanese trading company to end the financial struggle. Kitami fears that Onitsuka is slowly being erased from the partnership and doesn't want them to work together. He visits Blue Ribbon in their new office in Tigard and reports them that Onitsuka wants to buy 51% of Blue Ribbon Sports and that if they don't accept they will probably have to look for a bigger and better distributor. Kitami tells Phil that he personally thinks it would be the best for everybody if Phil just accepts the deal. Phil declines the offer, he now knows they can’t be dependent on Onitsuka any longer. They need to do their own thing.

Once again Phil visits the bank, but they tell him that they decided to stop doing business with him. He is still in contact with Nissho Iwai, who desperately want to work with Blue Ribbon Sports. They let him know about a fabric that seem to produce shoes in a high quality

In search of a new identity Phil gives graphic design student Carolyn Davidson a call. He wants her to design a logo that represents motion. A couple days later she brings some sketches to the office. Phil and Woodell go through it together and both like the one with a check in it. They give Davidson $35 for her work.

They still don't have a name for their new company. Dimension Six, Bengal, Condor and Falcon are all ideas that don't seem to impress. Shortly before the deadline of giving in the order for the new shoes, they have to make a decision. Johnson called in the morning to suggest a name that came to him in a dream. Phil and the other guys are already rolling their eyes at Johnson. The name he suggest is "Nike". Phil doesn't love it, but the other guys seem to like it. They decide to use it for now, until they find something better.

The fabric sends Phil their prototype of the new shoes and he is in awe. It's a Cortez just like the one that Bowerman designed for Onitsuka Tiger but instead of the trademark Onitsuka stripes on the side it has the swoosh on it. Phil is happy with the shoe but makes small notes for possible improvements.

1972
At the National Sporting Goods Association Show in Chicago Blue Ribbon Sports presents their Nike shoes to the public for the first time. The orange boxes that the shoes are packed in are an eye-catcher. The shoes aren't like the one prototype Phil put his hands on, because he quality is worse and they just look a bit off, but the people don't care. They trust Blue Ribbon and make sure to make pre-orders. Onitsuka and Kitami are also present at the show and Kitami is furious. He threatens that if they decide to sell the shoes Onitsuka will sue them.

Phil discusses with Bowerman and his lawyer how they will handle the situation. The lawyer tells them if Onitsuka sues them first they will go to court in Japan and there is no way they will win the case over there. His plan is to sue them first so they go to court in the US.

Phil also informs the other Nike guys about their plan. The mood is pretty bad, everyone knows it will be an ugly exhausting battle with Onitsuka with great chances that they will lose. Phil tries to motivate them in a halftime speech manner. Telling them that this is the moment they have been waiting for, finally selling their own shoes, their own product. No longer dependent on Onitsuka.

More and more athletes are wearing Nike shoes. Phil is keen on getting Steve Prefontaine to wear Nike, but he is still wearing Adidas, because he doesn’t want to change shoes shortly before the Olympics

Bowerman is coaching the US run and track team at the Olympics 1972 in Munich. Steve Prefontaine is also part of the team. Phil is following it from his television but the events are overshadowed by a terrorist attack in which 17 people had lost their lifes. Phil gets the message that Bowerman and the US team are physically ok but of course these events took a toll on many people. Bowerman himself was the one who called the U.S. Marines to come and protect the athletes. He retired shortly after the events and the run and track star Steve Prefontaine would never be the same.

Phil tries to do his best with helping Bowerman back up. He tells him how important his work on the waffle sole is for Nike and that it will be a gamechanger. Phil also decides to hire Steve Prefontaine as a market figure for Nike. He just wants to make sure the once-in-a-century runner is getting back on track. He allows Pre to train and try to get back to his old self while also repping Nike through the country.

In 1974 the case against Onitsuka finally goes to court in the federal courthouse in Portland. Phil is seemingly nervous. The head lawyer for Onitsuka's side starts with his opening statement. And he does his job very well. We can see the fire in his eyes when he explains to the court room what Phil Knight and Blue Ribbon Sports have done to those poor Japanese business man. He rightly reports that Phil Knight pretended to have a company by the name of Blue Ribbon to persuade Onitsuka to do Business with them. He claims that Knight did everyhing necessary to perpetuate his fraud.

Phil is bummed. He realizes that the lawyer isn't even lying, he really did those things. But now Blue Ribbon's lawyer is on. He doesn't have the fire that his predecessor brought to the court. At the end of his statement he calls the founder of Blue Ribbon as his first witness - Phil Knight. Phil is doing a bad job, stumbling over his own words. His nerves definitely got to him and he sweats a lot.

It even worsens when the Onitsuka lawyer is able to ask Phil questions. Phil tries to bend the truth in a way that fits him best but his plot soon stops making sense after more and more questions. Even the judge points out that Phil should answer the questions more concisely in "twenty words or less". Phil ensures him that this is not possible.

The judge has called a halt to the trial and admonished both sides.

In the meantime Jeff Johnson who was there to support Phil, reports the guys that he just checked their sales and that Nikes are selling crazy thanks to the Bowerman-designed Waffle Trainer. The shoes is such a hit that Phil envisions for the first time, that they could outperform Adidas one day.

The trial continues and Kitami's assistent Iwano suprisingly is very honest about everything that has happened so far, which of course contradicts a lot of what has been said from Onitsuka's side.

Finally Kitami is now called as a witness. He insists on having a translator even though Phil knows he speaks perfect english. Kitami is lying and overexaggerating through his translator. He is saying that they only started looking for new distributors after Blue Ribbon and Phil Knight created Nike. After both lawyers have given their closing arguments, the judge announces that he will make a decision soon.

Weeks later it is announced that the judge is about to rule. Only Phil, his lawyer and the Onitsuka lawyer could make it in this short time. The judge summarizes the case and notes that they have two conflicting stories. He is convinced that Blue Ribbon's seems to be more true than Onitsuka's. He acknowledges Kitami's assistent Iwano who bravely seems to have called out Kitami's lies. The judge declares that Blue Ribbon will retain all rights to the name Cortez. He also explains that there clearly were damages made but he does not feel qualified to assign a dollar figure to it. So they will assign a special master to determine what the damages are.

Phil is in disbelief - They won. He shakes hands with his lawyer, claps his shoulder and than hugs him. They both go to a bar where Phil orders them shots before he phones Penny from the pay phone. He yells at her that they have won after she asked what they have won, he tells her it's still not decided but atleast they know they got the victory.

A week later Onitsuka makes a settlement offer - $400.000. Phil thinks it is a bit too low but Onitsuka's lawyer wouldn't get any higher and Phil's side thinks the offer is fair.

The formal signing takes place in San Francisco. This time Kitami is there too as he has to sign the settlement. He reaches out his hand in Phil's direction and Phil shooks it. Phil and Kitami sign the contracts, the case is over - Blue Ribbon and Nike won.

Phil, Johnson, Woodell, Bowerman and many other Nike affiliates celebrate their victory at a grill bar.

...

Nike went on to become the biggest sportswear company in the world. In 1976 aeronautical engineer Frank Rudy brought them the "Air" sole which later would be instrumental to a lot of famous Nikes. They went public in 1980 with the price of 22$ per share just like Apple and this time people actually wanted to buy shares. In 2020 they had a revenue of $37,403 billion beating Adidas once again

Jeff Johnson was Nike's first full-time employee and a big reason why Nike is as big as it is today. He retired in his 40s and enjoyed a quiet life after that.

Steve Prefontaine would never be the runner he was before the Olympics in Munich. He died 1975 in a car accident in his Butterscotch MG that he brought from his first Nike check

Bob Woodell would never walk again but he flew his own private airline, giving a middle finger to everyone who said he would be helpless. When Nike went public he sat his parents down and told them their initial $8.000 loan to Phil was now worth $1.6 million.

Bill Bowerman's Waffle Sole and his other inventions helped Nike to establish themselves in the running shoe market. He went on to design many other now classic Nikes but his experimentation with glue and solvents with toxic components caused a nerve damage in his legs which made him lose a lot of mobility. He was soon unable to run in the shoes he gave the world. He began to reduce his role at Nike in the late 70's to enjoy a quiet life with his wife in his hometown Fossil, Oregon.

Phil Knight never stopped believing in his idea and went from selling the shoes of another company out of his trunk to being the founder of the biggest sportswear company in the world. In June 2016 Phil retired from his chairman position.

Plot: Harry Mason (Matthew Fox) sits in a doctors office holding the hand of his wife Jodie (Kerry Bishe). Harry tries to hold back his tears as the doctors inform the couple that Jodie's cancer is inoperable and that her time left on Earth is limited. They drive home from the office in silence until a girl (Quinn Copeland) walks out into the middle of the road. Harry manages to avoid the child and narrowly avoid a dangerous crash. Harry and Jodie take the girl out of the road. Harry and Jodie take the girl, Cheryl, to the authorities but nobody is able to figure out where her family is. The girl simply says her family is gone. Harry and Jodie sign on to be foster parents for Cheryl. Jodie thanks Harry for doing this for her as it has always pained her that her cancer has kept them from having kids of their own.

Not long after Cheryl moves in with the Mason family, a social worker arrives to inform them that Cheryl's family has been found murdered. Jodie asks what will happen with Cheryl now. The social worker indicates that Cheryl will be put up for adoption. Jodie asks Harry if they can adopt her. He is wary since Jodie's health is worsening. Jodie begs Harry to give her this one final gift. Harry relents and agrees that they will adopt Cheryl permanently.

There is a stretch of nearly one year where Harry, Jodie and Cheryl are all one happy family, but Jodie's cancer begins making her even weaker. She knows the end is near but decides to plan one final trip for them to take as a family - to the resort town of Silent Hill, Maine. Jodie dies in her sleep after booking the trip.

After Jodie's death, Harry falls into a deep depression. At Jodie's funeral, Cheryl reminds Harry of the trip "mom" planned for them and that she thinks that "mom" would want them to go still. Harry collapses in tears at hearing Cheryl call Jodie "mom". Harry agrees to take Cheryl along on the trip that Jodie had planned for them, hoping it can help him cope with the grief he is feeling.

Harry and Cheryl drive to Silent Hill as it begins to snow. Harry suddenly sees an astral projection of Alessa Gillespie (Oona Laurence) in front of him, causing him to crash the car into a ditch, knocking Harry out cold. When Harry wakes up, he finds Cheryl is missing. He gets out of the car and begins calling out for Cheryl to no avail. He begins walking down the road toward Silent Hill, continuing to call out for Cheryl.

Brahms olice officer Cybil Bennett (Katie Cassidy) is riding toward Silent Hill to check on why communications between the two towns have gone down when she sees the same apparition in the road. She swerves out of the way, hitting a patch of black ice which causes her motorcycle to crash. He is unharmed from the crash, but her motorcycle is no longer operational. She walks toward the town as she tries to get someone from her station on the radio to no avail.

When Harry finally makes it into the town of Silent Hill, he finds the place is seemingly and eerily deserted and shrouded by fog. He thinks he sees Cheryl running away. He immediately begins chasing after the figure, calling out Cheryl's name. He follows the figure into a dark alleyway. Suddenly the sky turns a dark black. A siren blares in the distance. Harry uses a lighter to look around, finding that the town appears to have mutated into some dark version of Silent Hill. The road pavement beneath him has become rusty metal grating. The walls have become rusty chain link fences and damaged stone. Everything around him is seemingly covered in rust and blood, wrapped in barb wire. There are sounds of metal clanking. Harry continues down the dark alleyway, finding a rotting, mutilated corpse hanging on a fence. Just then, Harry is attacked by small, hideous, child-like monsters - the Grey Children - who emerge from the shadows. They grab him and begin stabbing him with scissors repeatedly. Harry is overwhelmed and passes out.

"The opening sequences of Silent Hill were definitely not what I was expecting with an early focus on the tragic family life of Harry Mason (Matthew Fox). He handled the drama and emotion very well as a leading man. While this pilot may not thrill fans of the video games, I'm expecting much more horror elements going forward." - Dave Manning, Ridgefield Press

"Until the very end of the pilot, you wouldn't even know that Silent Hill is a horror TV series. This is a problem. Despite a strong performance from Matthew Fox, this episode may prove to turn off fans horror." - Brenton Smalls, Playboy

"I won't say this doesn't build interest, but it feels like the series is holding back too much. I like Matthew Fox, who seems committed to the role but also seems like a space cadet when trying to show emotion. Overall, I'll follow through, and it's nowhere near a wide miss on video games adapted to tv series. (especially since NETFLIX's Resident Evil won that race)." - Lindsey Farmington, streamingwars.com

Season 1 Episode 2: School's Out

Cast:
Matthew Fox .... Harry Mason (Regular)
Katie Cassidy .... Cybil Bennett (Regular)
Oona Laurence .... Alessa Gillespie (Recurring)

Plot: Harry Mason (Matthew Fox) wakes up in the deserted Cafe 52. He finds a police officer standing over him, Cybil Bennett (Katie Cassidy). She explains that she crashed her motorcycle and came into town to try to contact her station in the nearby town of Brahms, when she noticed Harry being attacked. She scared off the attackers and brought him inside. Harry tries to explain that they were no ordinary attackers, but rather they seemed like demon children. Cybil thinks that Harry is just overwhelmed and may have hit his head when he was attacked. Cybil eventually leaves to try to find the local police station. She encourages Harry to stay put in the diner until she comes back with help.

Harry scours through the diner until he finds a handgun hidden underneath the cash register. As Harry is preparing to leave the diner, a radio on the counter begins emitting static. Harry is investigating the radio when a flying creature - an Air Screamer - comes crashing through the window and into the diner. The creature attacks Harry, but he manages to fire the gun at the creature three times, killing it. Harry stands there in disbelief for a moment before leaving the diner with the radio.

As Harry walks down the street it looks more normal again, albeit deserted. Gone is the metal, rust and blood. Harry soon sees other monstrous creatures nearby. He discovers that the radio's static intensifies as the monsters grow closer. Harry steps on a piece of paper in the street and stops to look at it. It is a hand-written note that simply says "TO SCHOOL". Harry thinks the handwriting looks like Cheryl's so he follows the street until he arrives at Midwich Elementary School -  large Catholic school with Gothic architecture and a clock tower.

Harry finds the front doors of the school are wide open, so he goes inside. The place looks like it has been abandoned for many years. Inside Harry finds many Grey Children wandering the halls of the school. Harry sneaks around the school, checking in every class room for Cheryl, but cannot find her anywhere. Just as he is about to give up, he hears whispers coming from the school's boiler room. He walks into the room and finds Alessa Gillespie (Oona Laurence) standing in the middle of the room. Harry recognizes her as the person he saw in the road before he crashed. Just as he starts asking who she is, Alessa disappears into thin air. A creature begins trying to break out of the furnace in the boiler room. Harry runs out of the school before it can get out and attack.

Harry is confused and frustrated by his search for Cheryl. He then begins to hear a church bell ringing in the distance. Realizing that noise must mean there is someone at the church who could help him, Harry begins walking through town toward the noise.

Cybil Bennett finally makes it to the Silent Hill Police station, finding it deserted like the rest of the town. Inside she finds more ammunition for her gun while she looks around with her flashlight for any clues on what has happened. Before she leaves, she takes a shotgun with her as well. She heads back to the diner, finding the dead Air Screamer, but no sign of Harry.

Harry Mason continues making his way through Silent Hill, walking toward the sounds of the church bells. Along the way he walks past the town electronic store. Every television in the window shows staticy footage of Cheryl (Quinn Copeland) He finally arrives at Balkan Church, a rundown Christian church. Harry enters the building where he finds Dahlia Gillespie (Ivana Milicevic) praying before an altar. Harry aims his gun at her and asks who she is. Dahlia tells Harry that Silent Hill is being devoured by darkness before giving him the Flauros - a gold, pyramid-shaped object. She claims the object is a cage of peace that can be used to counteract the wrath of the underworld. Dahlia then tells Harry that if he wants to find his daughter, he should proceed immediately to the hospital. Dahlia then leaves the church.

Harry makes his way to Alchemilla Hospital. He sees lights on inside from the street. Harry hurries inside where he encounters Dr. Michael Kaufman (Lochlyn Munro) sitting alone in an examination room with a gun in his hands. Michael fires a shot as he is startled by Harry. Once Harry is able to convince Michael that he is not a monster, Michael calms down. The lights in the room begin to flicker. Michael quickly hides under a desk. Everything around Harry shifts back to the dark version of Silent Hill. Harry explores the hospital where he is attacked by monstrous a monstrous Puppet Nurse. Harry is rescued by a young nurse, Lisa Garland (Grace Van Dien), who kills the Puppet Nurse. Harry asks Lisa about what is going on. She insists that she fell asleep during her break and when she woke up the hospital was in a deserted state, then it became the twisted vision they are currently in. The world then shifts back its deserted state and Lisa is nowhere to be seen.

As Harry explores the hospital, looking for other survivors, he encounters Dahlia again. She insists that he is wasting time and asks if he wants the darkness to devour the whole town. She runs away as Michael comes out from hiding and tells Harry that he has a chemical - Aglaophotis - that may help them with the evil that is surrounding them. Michael tells Harry that he is off to the motel to collect it and wishes Harry luck.

When Harry leaves the hospital he runs into Cybil Bennett. She chastises him for leaving the diner, but informs him that she has good news: she saw a girl out by the lake. The pair cut through Green Lion Antiques Store to get to the next street after the road is blocked. Inside the store they find a secret altar that appears to have been used by some sort of occult group. Harry suddenly disappears from Cybil's sight, much to her confusion.

Harry finds himself back in the hospital with Lisa. He tells her that he needs to get to the lake as soon as possible and asks her for directions. She tells him how to get there, but when he asks her to come along, she tells him that she feelts that she is not supposed to leave the hospital. Harry thanks Lisa and leaves the hospital to follow her directions.

Harry pulls out his gun and runs into the bar where he finds Dr. Michael Kaufman (Lochlyn Munro) being attacked a some Grey Children. Harry shoots the monster, saving Michael. Michael is eager to leave the area and hurries off without thanking Harry for saving him. Harry then notices that in the struggle, Michael dropped a vial of red liquid on the floor. Harry guesses that it must be the Aglaophotis Michael had previously mentioned. Michael rushes back into the bar though and snatches the vial away from Harry. Harry tries to chase after Michael, but he disappears into the shadows.

Harry follows the road to the lake, meeting up again with Cybil Bennett (Katie Cassidy) along the way. As they make their way closer to the lake, they decide to split up to find Cheryl. Harry heads toward the lighthouse while Cybil goes toward the Lakeside Amusement Park. Along the way, Cybil is attacked by an unknown assailant. When Harry reaches the top of the lighthouse, he finds Alessa (Oona Laurence), who tells him to go to the amusement park.

When Harry enters the amusement park, he begins looking around for both Cheryl and Cybil. On the park's carousel, Harry finds Cybil. But she appears to be possessed by some sort of parasite that is controlling her like a puppet. She attacks Harry, who shoots her in the head with his gun, killing her. Alessa then appears before him. Harry pulls out the Flauros, which traps Alessa. Dahlia Gillespie (Ivana Milicevic) then appears, snidely revealing that she has used Harry's quest to find his daughter to get him to trap Alessa for her. Harry soon finds himself back in the hospital. He finds Lisa Garland (Grace Van Dien). Lisa is bleeding from every orifice of her body while Harry watches on horrified. He runs into a room and locks the door. In the room, he finds Lisa's diary which reveals that she was the nurse who attended to Alessa following a bad fire. Harry witnesses flashes of a meeting between Dahlia and Michael Kaufman discussing Alessa's hospitalization and the rebirth of God himself. Harry further learns that Dahlia sacrified her daughter Alessa in a fire to her god. This is when Alessa split her soul in half to avoid Dahlia's god from being born. The good half of her soul manifested itself as Cheryl, which is why nobody could ever find any information on her family - she never had one.

After the revelations, Harry leaves the room to find Lisa crying as she continues to bleed from every orifice and every pore. She begs him to put her out of her misery. Harry takes a deep breath and shoots Lisa in the head. He covers her body with a gown and apologizes to her corpse.

On the shores of the lake, Cheryl (Quinn Copeland) wanders in a trance toward Dahlia and Alessa's real body, which is wrapped entirely in bandages. Cheryl and Alessa begin to reform together. Alessa's astral projection  - the Alessa that Harry has been encountering - watches nearby, unable to stop it.

Plot: Harry Mason (Matthew Fox) leaves the hospital and runs back toward the lake as fast as he can. He can see a blinding light in the distance as he gets closer. When he arrives he finds that Dr. Michael Kaufman (Lochlyn Munro) has also arrived, holding Dahlia up at gunpoint. Harry asks what the hell is going on now. Michael throwns the vial of Aglaophotis at the Incubator. This expels the evil from the body of Alessa (Oona Laurence) in the form of the Incubus, which emerges howling in pain from the chemical.

The Incubus, a large winged goat-like demon, attacks Harry and Michael. They both fire all of their bullets at the demonic creature. Dahlia kneels down before the great beast, but instead of appreciating her worship the Incubus swallows her whole. The Incubus then flies around before impaling  Michael in the chest with its horns. He stumbles back. A demonic form of Lisa Garland (Grace Van Dien) then appears and latches her arms around the injured Michael. She then pulls him into the darkness of the lake as he kicks and screams.

Harry is about to give up, but then the spirit of Cheryl (Quinn Copeland) emerges from the Incubator and hurls herself into the heart of the Incubus, killing it in a ball of flames. The Incubator's aura dims, revealing Alessa. She gives Harry a newborn baby, explaining that the child is made up of all the goodness from herself and Cheryl. As Harry holds his new daughter, Alessa informs him that she will hold off the dark version of Silent Hill long enough for him to get back to the main road.

Harry hurries through Silent Hill back toward the main road. Once he leaves the town limits, the shroud of fog finally leaves the town of Silent Hill. Alessa meanwhile is consumed by the flames of the dark version from overexerting her powers over the town.

Harry makes it back to his car with the newborn baby. He stares at the child. He feels confused and frustrated at who the child could actually and whether or not he should trust Alessa who said the child would be made of goodness.

As Harry drives back toward home with the sleeping baby in the car, he imagines that his wife Jodie (Kerry Bishe) is next to him. He asks her what he should do. She reminds him that part of Cheryl is in that baby and Harry promised that he would raise Cheryl for her. Harry begins crying, not sure that he can do all this without her. She assures him that he can and that she will be watching him do it all from above. Harry then looks at the sleeping baby and a slight smile comes across his face.

"I'm not sure how well the series adapts the Silent Hill video games, but I liked Jack Brown and Brandon Cronenberg's efforts on this first season. It kept up its creepy tone throughout the short season and the cast delivered strong performances in every episode." - Dave Manning, Ridefield Press
"Silent Hill struggles to maintain momentum throughout the season. Some episodes would be creepy and eerie, while others felt monotonous and slow. Matthew Fox continued to deliver good work throughout the season, but he is often left holding the bag when the script lets him down." - Brenton Smalls, Playboy

"I tried to find something to hand onto, but I couldn't save my life. I didn't completely hate it, but it all felt familiar and tired through every episode. I didn't mind the tone or Fox's performance, but it didn't get me across to wanting more." - Lindsey Farmington, streamingwars.com

The Roundup with Jeff Stockton (Season 24 Round 4)

Following what might be the worst round in LRF history at the box office, things can only go up from here. Here's The Roundup....

3. Next Round
After how rough this round ended up, everybody should be hopeful that next round will turn out better.

2. Her Dying Wish
I didn't love it, but it was the brightest spot of a rough round for the studio as a decent little drama.

1. Jenna Ortega
I honestly had no idea who Ortega was going into Her Dying Wish. She surprised and impressed me though. Now, I'm not sure if she's going to be a superstar, but she is a charismatic young performer.

3. Inner Demons
Some of the other reviews mentioned this, but Inner Demons fails as a horror film because there isn't anything scary in it. Other films in the Drama/Horror genre have succeeded in the past - Black Hole comes to mind - but that film received much better reviews and did actually have several scary, creepy and unsettling scenes.

2. Box Office
I cannot think of another round in LRF history that was as anemic at the box office as this one. The worldwide box office barely broke $100 million and the losses were pretty big even with Her Dying Wish making a small profit.

1. Police Story: Brother
I don't actually hate the story to Police Story: Brother, but it doesn't fit in with the other three Police Story films Meirad Tako wrote at all.

On Location (Season 24 Round 4)

Police Story: Brother
- Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada

Inner Demons
- Syracuse, New York, USA

Her Dying Wish
- Athens, Greece
- Atlanta, Georgia, USA

Box Office Facts
Police Story: Brother
This Police Story prequel failed to earn even half of the previous lowest grossing film in the franchise, Police Story: The Return, and less than a third of the highest grossing film in the series, Police Story: Case Closed.

Inner Demons
Director Jon Watts' first film for LRF, Displacement, made a profit of $19.38 million while this second film has lost the studio $19.98 million. That puts him just under the break even point financially.

Her Dying Wish
While Her Dying Wish actually grossed less at the box office than Sammy-Jo Ellis' first film, So This Is What It Feels Like, it cost a lot less than that first film which helped it make a small profit.

Release: Her Dying Wish

Her Dying Wish
Genre: Drama
Director: Lena Dunham
Writer: Sammy-Jo Ellis
Cast: Jenna Ortega, Ben Barnes, Lena Dunham, Yuliya Snigir

Budget: $14,000,000
Domestic Box Office: $16,394,090
Foreign Box Office: $12,458,934
Total Profit: $7,348,519

Reaction: The second film from writer Sammy-Jo Ellis, and the first to make a profit, clearly benefited from the low budget to make a little money.

"The film is maybe a bit too coy with its point and direction at times. The script by Sammy-Jo Ellis beats around the bush a lot of the time when a more concise direction would have made for better results. For a film that isn't particularly long, Her Dying Wish feels like it has a lot of extra padding." - Lois Reeves, Dodge City Daily Globe

"Her Dying Wish takes a while to get to the actual story at hand. Ben Barnes and Jenna Ortega function well as a duo, carrying the film when the script and direction let them down. It's a decent sophomore effort from writer Sammy-Jo Ellis that does manage to hit most of the notes it tries." - George Overmyer, Baltimore Magazine

"I respect the aspect Sammy-Jo is going for and love the pageantry being performed from the two leads. Jenny Ortega more and more with each passing film shows why she's someone to watch along with Barnes who plays it for all it's got. Unfortunately, none of this helps a story that doesn't feel like it goes anywhere or leaves any impact as it certainly could have played more on the daughter's & her father's broken relationship between one another" - Rosemary Lawe, Time Out

Rated PG-13 for thematic material

Interview: Sammy-Jo Ellis

In this edition of Interview, Last Resort Films president Phil Dolan sits down for an interview with sophomore writer Sammy-Jo Ellis (So This Is What It Feels Like) to discuss her latest film, Her Dying Wish, and her future plans.

PD: Your first film, So This Is What It Feels Like, did well with critics but didn't make much of a dent at the box office. What are you expectations for your latest film, Her Dying Wish?

SJE: Obviously I am hoping for success in both areas, but I will be honest, I think it may go along the same lines as STIWIFL. I believe that Her Dying Wish may come under some scrutiny due to its director, Lena Dunham. I was unaware of the controversies that she had and by the time I found out it was too late to change her. So yes, I believe that her being in the director chair may hurt the box office. It is a film about a fathers broken relationship with his daughter, and I believe that Ben Barnes and Jenna Ortega do a great job as the two. I hope the critics see it the same way.

PD: What made you decide to follow in your brother's footsteps writing for LRF?

SJE: I don’t know really, he just seemed to be having lots of fun doing it. He raved on about it and writing stories. I started by giving him a couple ideas, then tried branching off on my own. I hope to have the same impact on LRF that he has. What is he now a 3 time best picture winner? I hope to get there some day.

PD: Do you care more about critical praise or box office success?

SJE: Critical. It’s an easy answer for me. I am not like Jimmy and won’t be doing superhero ventures, so Box office isn’t my main concern. Right now I am writing things that I would want to see, I feel that if I continue down that route I will eventually start getting higher critical praise, especially once I’ve been here for a while.

PD: What types of films can we expect to see from you in the future?

SJE: As I said above, you won’t be seeing superhero projects from me, I do love them, but can’t see myself writing them. I aim to do mostly lower budget, low effects films but that’s probably the opposite of my next one. Troll Mountain is a series of novellas that I love so wanted to adapt. That is my next film. After that I have no solo projects, but have a couple co-written ones in process. When I started Jimmy told me that he has had his most fun when he has a writing partner, so I reached out to some of them. I have a film coming with John Malone titled Man of God, starring Josh Brolin. And I have one with Chad Taylor that is currently untitled, it is starring Jon Bernthal as a former sports star that has his daughter thrown back into his life. I truly hope you guys keep seeing more of me in the future.

PD: I know you're still relatively new to the LRF world, but do you have any favorite LRF releases?

SJE: Yes. Jimmy used to show me his and I love Klondike, that is my favourite one he has collaborated on, I’m so glad it succeeded. From the season that just want I agree with everyone I guess that Judas Iscariot was fantastic, but I have to say Berserker was my favourite of last season. I think the casting and story was just perfect. I hope Jimmy’s Norse film comes close to that. As for others, I’ve been going through some films slowly and I have to say I read Chad Taylor’s A Lost Sense of Heaven and it goddamn wrecked me. Man, I hope I can write like that soon. But yeah A Lost Sense of Heaven is probably my favourite.
