A Second Look: Cold

Welcome back for another edition of A Second Look with Jeff Stockton! In this segment I will take a "second look" at a past LRF release with a fresh set of eyes.

This time around, I am taking a look at the well-regarded crime/mystery from director David Fincher and writer James Morgan, Cold. When it was released back in Season 12, I felt that it was a well-written and well-directed crime film, but the casting - casting fathers as older versions of their sons playing the same characters - felt incredibly gimmicky.

Taking "A Second Look" here 20 seasons later, my issues with the film have only amplified. The only talent that comes out looking good by the end of this film are Michael Stuhlbarg and Astrid Berges-Frisbey. The casting gimmick orchestrated by writer James Morgan did not age well. In what world does Max Irons/Kiefer Sutherland/Colin Hanks/Wyatt Russell look identical to Jeremy Irons/Donald Sutherland/Tom Hanks/Kurt Russell? The ages don't match up very well either. The immensely distracting casting gimmick really hampers the well-written script of this film.
