Now Showing: Morrissey and Marr

Morrissey and Marr
Genre: Drama/Biography
Director: Danny Boyle
Writer: Alex Conn
Cast: Daniel Radcliffe, Jack O'Connell, Felicity Jones, Jack Lowden, Jeremy Irvine

Plot: The film opens with Morrissey (Daniel Radcliffe) at his lowest place ever. He is crying and watching television after he finds out His guitarist he was planning to use got a spot in another band. He basically just sits in his bed all day watching kitchen sink British dramas. One day Johnny Marr (Jack O'Connell) knocks on his door offering to play music. They write their first song and they’re off to the races.

The Smiths then recruit Andy Rourke (Jack Lowden) and Mike Joyce (Jeremy Irvine). Morrissey at this time is very shy he has trouble talking to people. He plays a very good show and then he cries going to sleep. The film then cuts to Morrissey promoting the first album by The Smiths which is their self titled and saying he expects critical praise for this album.

Morrissey immediately is thrust into the star status and Morrissey does interview after interview talking about his past and how good his records are. He and Marr have arguments about how the band positions should work and Morrissey says that since he is the lead singer he should be the voice of the Smiths.

At the same time Morrissey still goes to parties where he is praised and he is nervous around everyone particularly the people he likes. He meets people he likes both men and women and he tries to talk to them but gets too nervous. He starts having PTSD of the abuse he endured in school by teachers. The teachers would call his dreams unrealistic and stupid and would often use corporal punishment against him.

Morrissey goes for a walk and then comes home and writes Barbarism begins at home and The Headmaster Ritual and sends the lyrics to Johnny Marr. Johnny Marr reads the lyrics and loves them and writes guitar and bass lines to them.

Morrissey then sees a man he is attracted to and he sees the same man every night at the bar and he sees one night he has a girlfriend. He tries to write a song but is in such despair that it doesn’t work and the song sucks in his opinion.

The album Meat Is Murder comes together in a montage and Morrissey becomes bigger and bigger and he is interviewed constantly. The other members have been interviewed less than Morrissey.
On one interview he calls the other musicians glorified session musicians.

The film then cuts to 2 years later.
Angie Marr (Felicity Jones) and Johnny Marr have a talk about this and Angie Marr is wondering why Morrissey gets all the attention and Johnny says it’s because he’s a genius. Johnny also notices that his children are more into the Cure than The Smiths when he asks which one they like more.

Morrissey and Johnny Marr have an argument about this topic and Johnny Marr and Morrissey cannot respond to that question. Slowly but surely The Smiths break up. Their final album Strangeaways Here We Come comes out and it is the least critically acclaimed album of their career.

Morrissey then goes on his press tour hyping his first solo album and he talks shit about The Smiths and he goes on interview after interview criticizing Johnny Marr, who sees this and is very angry. Johnny Marr calls Morrissey and they argue and Morrissey says that he can do what he wants and he’s writing the best music he’s ever made.

A year later on the street Morrissey and Johnny Marr see each other but dont say anything to each other.
