Casting Grades with Jeff Stockton (Season 26)

Jeff Stockton here. While this will be a new end-of-season segment, it will be familiar to those who frequent the LRF boards as something I have done with some films in the past. I will dissect the casting of several films from the season - namely adaptations featuring characters that exist in other formats (or reality).

Here we go....

Jack Huston as Tony Stark / Iron Man
Appearance: A-
Performance: B
Thoughts: Huston is the most charismatic actor or choice in the world, but he is a good match for how Tony Stark was traditionally portrayed in the comics. Huston didn't wow me with his performance, but he also didn't do anything wrong so I think he has plenty of opportunity to grow into the role.
Overall Casting Grade: B+

Denzel Washington as Nick Fury
Appearance: C-
Performance: C+
Thoughts: I honestly didn't think Washington was a good fit here. He didn't have the tough attitude the character requires.
Overall Casting Grade: C

Andre Holland as James Rhodes
Appearance: B
Performance: C+
Thoughts: His performance was decent, but not great. He didn't always buy him as a military type. But Holland is a good actor and manages to overcome most issues.
Overall Casting Grade: B-

Constance Wu as Monica Chang / Mandarin
Appearance: C+
Performance: B
Thoughts: Gender-swapping issues aside, I thought Wu brought some interesting elements to the character through her performance.
Overall Casting Grade: B-

Anna Kendrick as Pepper Potts
Appearance: B+
Performance: B-
Thoughts: I'd probably grade her performance higher if the story gave her a bit more to do as I like Kendrick as the character.
Overall Casting Grade: B

Gillian Jacobs as Maria Hill
Appearance: C+
Performance: C-
Thoughts: Jacobs felt a bit off for the role. Too "cute" and not tough enough.
Overall Casting Grade: C

Tim Robbins as Howard Stark
Appearance: B+
Performance: A
Thoughts: Robbins plays roles like this a lot in the later part of his long career. I don't blame the filmmakers here for grabbing him to play such a familiar role as Robbins is good at it.
Overall Casting Grade: A-

Debra Winger as Maria Stark
Appearance: B
Performance: B
Thoughts: She doesn't get as much to chew on as some other characters, but Winger gives a sturdy performance.
Overall Casting Grade: B

Tig Notaro as Bambi Arbogast
Appearance: C-
Performance: C+
Thoughts: You can count me as someone who just does not understand the appeal of Tig Notaro. I don't think she is particularly good at comedy or acting.
Overall Casting Grade: C

Roman Madyanov as Anton Vanko / Crimson Dynamo
Appearance: C
Performance: B-
Thoughts: Not much acting required for this role here, but the casting was decent.
Overall Casting Grade: C+

Billy Zane as Obadiah Stane
Appearance: A
Performance: C+
Thoughts: Hard to grade the performance of a cameo, but Zane certainly looks the part.
Overall Casting Grade: B

Overall Film Casting Grade: B-

ATLANTIS: BLOODLINE

Comic to Film Post: https://hmsfilms.blogspot.com/2023/04/comic-to-film-atlantis-bloodline.html

Harris Dickinson as Arthur Curry
Appearance: B+
Performance: B-
Thoughts: Dickinson still is not being given much to do with the character. I'd love to see him actually get to be the traditional Aquaman, but the filmmakers have denied us and Dickinson that so far.
Overall Casting Grade: B

Timothee Chalamet as Orm Marius
Appearance: C+
Performance: C-
Thoughts: Chalamet feels one-note in the role as a petulant, jealous type.
Overall Casting Grade: C

Saoirse Ronan as Mera
Appearance: C
Performance: B-
Thoughts: Ronan lacks the sexiness the character always had in the comics (not looks, but attitude), but is talented enough to sell the role still.
Overall Casting Grade: C+

Natalia Dyer as Tula
Appearance: b-
Performance: C
Thoughts: I'm not convinced by Dyer's performance in the role. Like a lot of fellow Stranger Things alum, I don't see super stardom in her future.
Overall Casting Grade: C+

Gillian Anderson as Corum Rath / Nula
Appearance: B
Performance: B
Thoughts: Anderson doesn't get nearly enough to do in this film as its villain. She is wasted a bit.
Overall Casting Grade: B

Charlotte Rampling as Cetea
Appearance: A-
Performance: B
Thoughts: Another underwritten role, but Rampling classes it up nicely.
Overall Casting Grade: B+

Will Patton as Nuidis Vulk
Appearance: B+
Performance: B-
Thoughts: Patton is good in the role and looks the part.
Overall Casting Grade: B

Timothy Hutton as Pomoxis
Appearance: C-
Performance: C-
Thoughts: Hutton doesn't have a lot to do, but he's also not a great fit as the character.
Overall Casting Grade: C-

Nikolaj Coster-Waldau as Orvax Marius
Appearance: A-
Performance: B
Thoughts: Pretty much just a cameo this time around, but he's still quite good as the character.
Overall Casting Grade: B+

Rebecca Breeds as Hila
Appearance: A-
Performance: C
Thoughts: Another cameo and not one carried over from another film to help judge things by. Breeds looks the part pretty well, that's for sure.
Overall Casting Grade: B

Overall Film Casting Grade: C+

FREE THE CHICAGO SEVEN!

Fact to Film Post: https://hmsfilms.blogspot.com/2023/04/fact-to-film-free-chicago-seven.html

Jay Baruchel as Abbie Hoffman
Appearance: B+
Performance: A
Thoughts: Jay Baruchel was surprisingly good in the role. He looks a decent amount like Hoffman and managed to sell the rest with his performance.
Overall Casting Grade: A-

Billy Crudup as Tom Forna
Appearance: B-
Performance: B+
Thoughts: Looks-wise, Crudup is probably too classically handsome to play Foran, but he's certainly a great actor.
Overall Casting Grade: B

Jonathan Groff as Tom Hayden
Appearance: C+
Performance: C+
Thoughts: Groff's range is limited and he doesn't look much like Hayden. Not the worst choice, but there was a lot of room for improvement here.
Overall Casting Grade: C+

Woody Harrelson as William Kunstler
Appearance: B+
Performance: B+
Thoughts: Harrelson was a solid choice here, even if Conn's script really didn't give him much to do.
Overall Casting Grade: B+

Emile Hirsch as Jerry Rubin
Appearance: B+
Performance: A
Thoughts: Hirsch has the right look and energy for Rubin.
Overall Casting Grade: A-

Bill Skarsgard as Rennie Davis
Appearance: B
Performance: C+
Thoughts: Skarsgard is given little to do acting-wise, so I can't score his performance any higher than I did.
Overall Casting Grade: B

Anthony Hopkins as Judge Hoffman
Appearance: C-
Performance: B-
Thoughts: Hopkins was too old for the role in my opinion, hurting his appearance grade.
Overall Casting Grade: C

Stephen Root as David Dellinger
Appearance: B
Performance: C+
Thoughts: Another role that would have been given a higher grade if the writing had given him more personality.
Overall Casting Grade: B-

Corey Hawkins as Bobby Seale
Appearance: B
Performance: D+
Thoughts: Hawkins is given little to do and isn't good enough of an actor to make it into anything more interesting than what's on the page.
Overall Casting Grade: C

Zoe Kazan as Anita Hoffman
Appearance: C-
Performance: C-
Thoughts: Kazan doesn't look like Anita and didn't give much of a performance in a severely underwritten role.
Overall Casting Grade: C-

Maude Apatow as Nancy Kurshan
Appearance: C+
Performance: C-
Thoughts: Apatow felt young but looks at least a little bit like the real Nancy.
Overall Casting Grade: C

Matt Jones as Lee Weiner
Appearance: B
Performance: C-
Thoughts: The height of his performance is his explanation that his name doesn't sound like it's spelled - that's all he has to do in the whole film other than sit around in the background.
Overall Casting Grade: C

Joe Mazzello as John Froines
Appearance: C+
Performance: D+
Thoughts: Somehow Mazzello gets even less to do than Jones, hurting his performance grade here.
Overall Casting Grade: C-

Overall Film Casting Grade: C

TITANS: EVIL INCARNATE

Comic to Film Post: https://hmsfilms.blogspot.com/2023/04/comic-to-film-titans-evil-incarnate.html

Taron Egerton as Dick Grayson / Nightwing
Appearance: B-
Performance: B
Thoughts: Egerton is his reliable self as Grayson here. He doesn't wow, but the film also isn't about him.
Overall Casting Grade: B-

Haley Lu Richardson as Koriand'r / Starfire
Appearance: B+
Performance: B-
Thoughts: Richardson is good as Starfire, bringing energy to an underwriten role.
Overall Casting Grade: B

Avan Jogia as Jaime Reyes / Blue Beetle
Appearance: B-
Performance: C+
Thoughts: This Blue Beetle has basically become the straight man to Beast Boy's comedic relief. Jogia is decent at it, but not great at it.
Overall Casting Grade: C+

Asa Butterfield as Gar Logan / Beast Boy
Appearance: B
Performance: B+
Thoughts: Butterfield plays the role in a fun way that keeps his scenes light and entertaining.
Overall Casting Grade: B

Joey King as Rachel Roth / Raven
Appearance: B+
Performance: A
Thoughts: King was the highlight of the film.
Overall Casting Grade: A-

David O'Hara as Trigon
Appearance: B
Performance: B+
Thoughts: Obscured behind CGI and makeup, O'Hara does a lot of acting with that great voice of him that suits the role well.
Overall Casting Grade: B+

Charlie Tahan as Jacob
Appearance: B-
Performance: C
Thoughts: Tahan is not as good as usual, with his Jacob failing to stand out from the other sons of Trigon.
Overall Casting Grade: C+

Louis Hofmann as Jesse
Appearance: C+
Performance: C-
Thoughts: Hofmann fared even worse than Tahan did.
Overall Casting Grade: C

Garrett Wareing as James
Appearance: B
Performance: C
Thoughts: Wareing brought a little swagger to James that the role needed.
Overall Casting Grade: C+

Ivana Milicevic as Angela Roth
Appearance: B+
Performance: B
Thoughts: Milicevic does good work in a small but important role.
Overall Casting Grade: B

Madelaine Petsch as Barbara Gordon / Oracle
Appearance: A
Performance: B
Thoughts: A cameo for Petsch. Not much to say other than that she still looks like Barbara, even in a wheelchair.
Overall Casting Grade: B+

Meg Foster as Azar
Appearance: A-
Performance: C+
Thoughts: Foster is given little to do in her one scene, but she brought those creepily blue eyes with her.
Overall Casting Grade: B

Overall Film Casting Grade: B-

CAPTAIN AMERICA

Comic to Film Post: https://hmsfilms.blogspot.com/2023/04/comic-to-film-captain-america.html

Glen Powell as Steve Rogers / Captain America
Appearance: A+
Performance: A
Thoughts: I cannot picture a single actor working in Hollywood today that could have been a better choice in the role.
Overall Casting Grade: A+

Lars Mikkelsen as Johan Shmidt / Red Skull
Appearance: B+
Performance: A-
Thoughts: Another strong choice. Mikkelsen clearly had fun in the role.
Overall Casting Grade: A-

Willa Fitzgerald as Sharon Carter
Appearance: A-
Performance: B
Thoughts: Fitzgerald certainly looks the part, but didn't get to stretch herself outside of the action scenes.
Overall Casting Grade: B+

Tom Selleck as Tony Stark
Appearance: B+
Performance: B+
Thoughts: Selleck gives a fun and authoritative performance here as the older Iron Man.
Overall Casting Grade: B+

Paul Mescal as James Buchanan Barnes
Appearance: B+
Performance: B+
Thoughts: It's a smaller role, but Mescal brought a nice intensity to the character. I hope they find a way to bring him back.
Overall Casting Grade: B+

Billy Campbell as General Chester Phillips
Appearance: A-
Performance: B
Thoughts: Campbell looks the part. Plus I sensed some of the playfulness he flashed in The Rocketeer on display here.
Overall Casting Grade: B+

Paul Reiser as Dr. Abraham Erskine
Appearance: B+
Performance: B+
Thoughts: Reiser was a nice choice here. He brought fun but also some drama chops to the character.
Overall Casting Grade: B+

Holliday Grainger as Peggy Carter
Appearance: B+
Performance: B
Thoughts: Her role is somewhat small, but I believed her chemistry with Powell.
Overall Casting Grade: B

Melissa George as Sinthea Shmidt / Madame Hydra
Appearance: B-
Performance: C+
Thoughts: George was decent, but seemed a bit off in the role to me.
Overall Casting Grade: C+

Noah Taylor as Arnim Zola
Appearance: B
Performance: A-
Thoughts: Taylor was a great choice for Zola. I hope to see more from him.
Overall Casting Grade: B+

Alexander Fehling as Heinz Kruger
Appearance: D+
Performance: C+
Thoughts: He doesn't look much like the comics version, but he worked decently as it was written in the film.
Overall Casting Grade: C

Jurgen Prochnow as Baron Wolfgang Von Strucker
Appearance: C+
Performance: B+
Thoughts: Prochnow brings gravitas to the role even if he looks much older than the character in the comics generally does.
Overall Casting Grade: B

Alain Moussi as Batroc
Appearance: B
Performance: B
Thoughts: Moussi is obviously cast to do the action, and he nails all that.
Overall Casting Grade: B

Jay Baruchel as Dr. Samuel Sterns
Appearance: B-
Performance: C+
Thoughts: Just a brief cameo here leading to The Hulk 2.
Overall Casting Grade: C+

Keanu Reeves as Norrin Radd / Silver Surfer
Appearance: B+
Performance: A
Thoughts: One of the better pieces of Marvel Universe casting is Reeves as the Surfer.
Overall Casting Grade: A-

John Krasinski as Reed Richards / Mister Fantastic
Appearance: A
Performance: B-
Thoughts: Krasinski is solid as the role as most would suspect. He has less to do in this film than the previous ones though.
Overall Casting Grade: B+

Sarah Gadon as Sue Storm / Invisible Woman
Appearance: A
Performance: B-
Thoughts: Same as Krasinski as Richards. Good in the role, but on the sidelines a bit performance-wise here.
Overall Casting Grade: B+

Jason Segel as Ben Grimm / The Thing
Appearance: B+
Performance: B+
Thoughts: Segel has fun as Grimm and the comedy and physical frame to pull off the role well.
Overall Casting Grade: B+

Jack Reynor as Johnny Storm / Human Torch
Appearance: B+
Performance: C+
Thoughts: Johnny was clearly the one who lost the most screentime when the two franchises combined for this film. He is good as the character, but he doesn't get much to work with this time.
Overall Casting Grade: B-

Orlando Bloom as Victor Von Doom
Appearance: A-
Performance: B+
Thoughts: Bloom is once again a great choice for the character and continues to develop him over the course of the films.
Overall Casting Grade: B+

Aksel Hennie as Annihilus
Appearance: B-
Performance: B-
Thoughts: Aksel Hennie didn't need to do much this time around other than be the voice of a physical threat for the characters.
Overall Casting Grade: B-

Arnold Vosloo as Galactus
Appearance: B-
Performance: B-
Thoughts: Vosloo will obviously get more to do in the next film, but he's still decent in his small capactiy.

Performance: B-
Thoughts: Mazzello brings his own style to the character with hit and miss results at times.
Overall Casting Grade: B-

Performance: C
Thoughts: Berlin didn't need to do much of anything, but she looks the part well.

Thoughts: Gorman has been a nice premise as Uatu. His voice is great as the role.
Overall Casting Grade: B+

Comic to Film Post: https://hmsfilms.blogspot.com/2023/05/comic-to-film-green-lantern-corps.html

Tom Cruise as Hal Jordan
Appearance: A

Overall Casting Grade: A

John Boyega as John Stewart
Appearance: A-
Performance: B
Thoughts: Boyega has a little less to do until closer to the end in this one, but he's once again solid as John Stewart.
Overall Casting Grade: B+

Luke Evans as Thaal Sinestro
Appearance: B+
Performance: B+
Thoughts: Luke Evans finally got to play Sinestro as the main villain and he did a very good job in the role.
Overall Casting Grade: B+

Carrie Coon as Carol Ferris
Appearance: B-
Performance: B-
Thoughts: I don't love Carrie Coon in this role. While I appreciate that she is closer to Cruise in age than most of his love interests, she plays things a bit too serious and straight for my taste in a film like this.
Overall Casting Grade: B-

Bryan Brown as Tomar-Re
Appearance: B
Performance: B
Thoughts: Bryan Brown has good chemistry with Cruise from their Cocktail days and does a nice job as Tomar-Re.
Overall Casting Grade: B

Terence Stamp as Ganthet
Appearance: B+
Performance: B+
Thoughts: Stamp's voice alone makes his Ganthet really pop.
Overall Casting Grade: B+

Cleopatra Coleman as Katma Tui
Appearance: B
Performance: B
Thoughts: Coleman is nice in the role, but she's there more for plot reasons than anything else it seems.
Overall Casting Grade: B

Miranda Otto as Arin Sur
Appearance: C
Performance: B-
Thoughts: I like Otto, but I don't think she's the best fit as Arin Sur. Good but not great.
Overall Casting Grade: C+

Kevin Durand as Kilowog
Appearance: B+
Performance: B+
Thoughts: Durand is finally back as Kilowog after being the highlight of Rocket Red many seasons ago. He's still a great fit as the character.
Overall Casting Grade: B+

Vinnie Karetak as Thomas Kalmaku
Appearance: B
Performance: C+
Thoughts: Karetak fits the part as one of the few Inuit actors around, but he has less to do in this sequel so I can't give him too high of a performance grade.
Overall Casting Grade: B-

Nick Chinlund as Arkillo
Appearance: B
Performance: B+
Thoughts: Chinlund brings his sinister voice and demeanor to the intergalactic menace that is Arkillo.
Overall Casting Grade: B+

Billy Dee Williams as Krona
Appearance: B
Performance: A-
Thoughts: Billy Dee Williams was an inspired choice for Krona. He brings his usual smooth Lando swagger to the role, but his age now brings a lifetime of experience to his performance.
Overall Casting Grade: B+

James Frain as Larfleeze
Appearance: B
Performance: B+
Thoughts: Frain has a great voice and attitude for the greedy Larfleeze. I hope to see more of him in the DC Universe's future.
Overall Casting Grade: B

Cliff Curtis as Abin Sur
Appearance: B+
Performance: B+
Thoughts: It's a small flashback role, but Curtis absolutely nails it.
Overall Casting Grade: B+

Veronica Ngo as Iroque
Appearance: C+
Performance: C+
Thoughts: Iroque is a tough character to pull off. I'm not sure if Ngo was the best fit even if she wasn't terrible.

Fact to Film Post: https://hmsfilms.blogspot.com/2023/06/fact-to-film-terminal-spy.html

Performance: B
Thoughts: Way too young. Despite his talent, that still stood out to me in the end.

Kaya Scodelario as Marina Litvinenko
Appearance: C-
Performance: C
Thoughts: Too young and too good looking. Her youthfulness hurt the performance pretty big in my opinion.

Appearance: D-
Performance: D
Thoughts: DeVito was all wrong for the role. Looks, performance, all didn't work.

Appearance: B-
Performance: C
Thoughts: Tovey is passable in appearance, but his performance left a little to be desired in my opinion.

Performance: B-
Thoughts: One of the very few decent casting choices in this film if you ask me.

Performance: B
Thoughts: Seyfried gave a decent performance, although she's much better looking that her real life counterpart.
Overall Casting Grade: B-

Appearance: B+
Performance: B+
Thoughts: Riseborough suits the role of Garbo nicely in terms of looks and performances.
Overall Casting Grade: B+

Orlando Bloom as Errol Flynn
Appearance: B-

Performance: C+
Thoughts: I didn't love Brosnahan in this role. She felt like a safe, generic choice for the role.
Overall Casting Grade: B-

Richard E. Grant as Boris Karloff
Appearance: B
Performance: B+
Thoughts: A smaller, fun role for Grant who is his usual solid self.

Performance: B+
Thoughts: The Astaire role plays nicely to Harris' strengths as a performer.
Overall Casting Grade: B+

Overall Casting Grade: B+

Timothy Olyphant as Major Glenn Talbot
Appearance: B
Performance: B
Thoughts: Olyphant does a decent job here. I think his antagonistic role was better written in the first film, but he's still good.
Overall Casting Grade: B

Jenny Slate as Jennifer Walters / She-Hulk
Appearance: B-
Performance: B+
Thoughts: She doesn't look exactly like the character, but Slate brings a good sense of humor to the character.
