SEASON 27 GOLDEN REEL AWARDS

Welcome to the Season 27 Golden Reel Awards ceremony! Tonight, a whopping 17 films from this season are vying for the 14 awards on the line tonight. The nominees are led by Territory and Time Out! with eight nominations each, followed by fairly evenly distributed nominations from the other 15 films represented here tonight.

AND NOW FOR THE AWARDS....

AND THE WINNER IS....

Time Out! wins the first award of the night, with still seven more nominations with a chance to win in.  Writers Chad Taylor and Mo Buck are no strangers in this category - Taylor has five Best Production Design trophies and Buck has one as well. Time Out! is also obviously looking to take home the ultimate award of the night - Best Picture - a feat which only three Best Production Design award winners have accomplished in the history of LRF - The Prisoner, Cape Torment and Risico. Norse: Valhalla's night is over with this being its only nominated category, but the other films all still have chances to take home some gold tonight.

AND THE AWARD GOES TO....

Sam wins in its first nominated category of the night. It becomes the 5th film written by Chad Taylor to win the award and the 3rd music biopic to win it, joining Sinatra and Kurt & Courtney: All Apologies. Sam doesn't have another chance to win until the Best Actor comes up later tonight.

AND THE AWARD GOES TO....

This marks the fourth Most Wanted Sequel trophy for writer John Malone. The first Namor the Sub-Mariner film also won this award, marking only the third time in LRF history that both the first and second films in a series won the award - it joins Batman: Gotham Knight and Batman: Caped Crusader and Risico and Carte Blanche (also written by John Malone). Wonder Woman: Labyrinth struck out in its only chance tonight, while Wolfenstein is now 0-for-2. Batman: Knightfall, meanwhile, still has four chances to take home gold tonight.

AND THE AWARD GOES TO....

Time Out! wins its second award of the night early on the ceremony. The film is off to a strong start as it still has six more chances to add to its award total. This is the second time a film co-written by Chad Taylor and Mo Buck has won the Best Ensemble Cast award, joining Doctor Love.

AND THE AWARD GOES TO....

Territory entered the evening tied with Time Out! for the most nominations (8) and now has won its first award of the night. This is the fourth Best Starring Couple trophy for writer Dwight Gallo as well as the fourth for his co-writer Jimmy Ellis. Vaughn and Dove can still also win for Best Actor and Best Actress, respectively. The night is done for Particle, failing to win in either of its nominated categories. Pompeii and Territory still have multiple categories left that they can win in, but Flick will be down to its final nomination for Best Actress (Taylor Russell).

AND THE AWARD GOES TO....

With its first victory of the night, Batman: Knightfall is the 5th DC Comics Universe film to win the Best Villain trophy (four of which have been from writer APJ). The film still has a few more shots at awards tonight, including in the Best Picture category where it will try to become the first comic book film to ever win the award. The night comes to an uneventful end for Wolfenstein and Anastasia, with both films failing to win any hardware. This is the first GRA victory for Dave Bautista, winning with his first career GRA nomination.

AND THE AWARD GOES TO....

Batman: Knightfall wins its second award of the night, immediately following its win for Best Villain. It becomes the 4th DC Comics Universe film to win the award - and the 5th superhero film overall. This is also the 4th Best Adaptation win for writer APJ. It is also worth noting that a Best Adaptation winner has not won the Best Picture GRA trophy since Season 20's Risico. Only time will tell if Batman: Knightfall can break that cold streak. The night comes to an end for The Passenger (0-for-2) and Namor the Sub-Mariner: Imperius Rex (1-for-3).

AND THE AWARD GOES TO....

Territory wins its second award of the night, bringing it into a three-way tie for the most awards with Time Out! and Batman: Knightfall. This will be the third Best Original Story award for writer Dwight Gallo and the fourth for co-writer Jimmy Ellis (it is the first they have shared as co-writers). This award bodes well for the film's chances at Best Picture as four of the past five winners of Best Original Story have also gone on to win Best Picture.

AND THE AWARD GOES TO....

This is the first GRA victory for Jessica Biel. She has previous nominations for Best Supporting Actress (all the way back in Season 1 for Invisible Monsters) and two nominations for Best Ensemble Cast for her two Justice League film appearances. All of her opponents were first time nominees. Desert Dreams has finally won its first award of the evening after striking out in Best Ensemble Cast and Best Original Story.

AND THE AWARD GOES TO....

Ruthersville, Brazil has finally managed to take home an award in its final chance after missing out on Best Ensemble Cast, Best Original Story and Best Supporting Actress. This is Dustin Hoffman's second GRA trophy, after winning Best Ensemble Cast for A Reputation, but is his first individual acting award. The Hippie Preacher is now winless in its first two categories, with only Wyatt Russell's Best Actor nomination left for a chance to win. The is the second Wyatt Allen film to win Best Supporting Actor following Colin Farrell's win for Whaling in Season 21.

AND THE AWARD GOES TO....

Desert Dreams wins its second award here bringing the film into a late four-way tie for the most awards of the evening alongside Batman: Knightfall, Territory and Time Out! After four Best Ensemble Cast nominations, Daisy Edgar-Jones finally has her first GRA trophy. The night is over without any fanfare for Tomato Can and Flick, both going home empty-handed. The night is over for Desert Dreams now, but Territory and Time Out! both have nominations in each of the final three categories left tonight, while Batman: Knightfall has two more nominations left as well.

AND THE AWARD GOES TO....

Vince Vaughn wins his first individual GRA trophy in what many consider this season's toughest category following his win for Best Starring Couple. Prior to tonight he had failed to win in any of his previous four GRA nominations. The Hippie Preacher goes home empty-handed tonight, while Sam goes home with only its Best Soundtrack trophy to display. Territory has now taken the lead on awards for the night with three trophies.

AND THE AWARD GOES TO....

The Safdie Brothers win their first Best Director award in their first nomination, beating out the three previous nominees. S. Craig Zahler once again is unable to bring home the award in his fourth nomination. Pompeii is still without a win tonight. Territory and Time Out! are now back in a tie for the most awards tonight with three heading trophies each heading into the final category of the night.

AND THE AWARD GOES TO....

With Territory's victory, not only does it end the night with the most trophies, but this win also ends the stranglehold John Malone and Chad Taylor have had on the Best Picture category over the last several seasons. Films written by Taylor and/or Malone have won five Best Picture awards in a row and nine of the last ten. This is the second Best Picture trophy for writer Dwight Gallo and the fourth for Jimmy Ellis (his second not co-written by John Malone).

Congratulations to all the winners! That's a wrap on the 27th season in the world of Last Resort Films. Stay tuned for the special GRA Edition of The Numbers on October 6th. That will be followed by three Writer Profile posts and the Season 28 LRF Comic-Con on October 19th.
