Casting Grades with Jeff Stockton (SEASON 28)

Jeff Stockton here with this season's edition of Casting Grades. In this segment I will dissect the casting of several films from the season - namely adaptations featuring characters that exist in other formats (or reality). Here we go....

TASK FORCE X: JUNGLELAND

John David Washington as Eric Needham / Black Spider
Appearance: B-
Performance: C+
Thoughts: John David Washington is not the most charismatic actor in the world, so he's an interesting choice to be elevated to the lead of the TFX franchise to me.
Overall Casting Grade: C+

Gugu Mbatha-Raw as Mari McCabe / Vixen
Appearance: B+
Performance: B+
Thoughts: A story like this isn't the best place to show off acting chops, but I like Mbatha-Raw as this character.
Overall Casting Grade: B+

Halle Berry as Amanda Waller
Appearance: B+
Performance: B
Thoughts: Her role was less complicated in this one, but I continue to think Berry is doing as good job as LRF's version of the character.
Overall Casting Grade: B+

Karl Glusman as Gar Lynns / Firefly
Appearance: B+
Performance: B
Thoughts: The character development of this character over the last few films has grown a bit repetitive, but he closed things out with a bang in this one.
Overall Casting Grade: B+

Jason Mantzoukas as Dr. Moyes / Titano (voice)
Appearance: B-
Performance: B+
Thoughts: The character was a bit straight-forward given Mantzoukas comedic acting style. At the very least he was able to bring a little extra oomph that wasn't on the page to his characters.
Overall Casting Grade: B

Rose Leslie as Poison Ivy
Appearance: B+
Performance: B+
Thoughts: Leslie's Poison Ivy is a little less interesting than she was in Birds of Prey, but she once again shows that she is a very good choice for the character.
Overall Casting Grade: B+

Okieriete Onaodowan as Waylon Jones / Killer Croc
Appearance: B+
Performance: C+
Thoughts: I was not impressed with Onaodowan's performance. He lacked menace to me. Part of that goes to the writing for the character though.
Overall Casting Grade: B-

Cristin Miloti as Lisa Rory / Golden Glider
Appearance: B
Performance: B+
Thoughts: Unlike some of the other characters, Miloti's Golden Glider actually feels like more of a character here than she really did in The Flash #2.
Overall Casting Grade: B+

Gustaf Skarsgard as Victor Szasz
Appearance: A-
Performance: B+
Thoughts: After a brief appearance in Batman: Knightfall, it was nice to see a slightly bigger role for Skarsgard in this one.
Overall Casting Grade: B+

Scott Adkins as Constantine Drakon
Appearance: B+
Performance: B+
Thoughts: I really liked seeing Adkins kick ass in the DC Comics Universe again. As with his first appearance, there isn't a ton of character work, but he excels in the action.
Overall Casting Grade: B+

Óscar Jaenada as Eduardo Flamingo / Flamingo
Appearance: B+
Performance: B-
Thoughts: Jaenada is entertaining with the little he is given to do.
Overall Casting Grade: B

Josh Holloway as Eddie Fyers
Appearance: B
Performance: B
Thoughts: More of a plot device than an actual character in this one. Like with Adkins, it was nice to see this long on the shelf Green Arrow character brought back for another film.
Overall Casting Grade: B

Overall Film Casting Grade: B

THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME

Taron Egerton as Quasimodo
Appearance: B-
Performance: A-
Thoughts: Obviously this role required a lot of makeup effects, but Egerton was able to pull off the character nicely with his skill-set able to manage the drama and singing alike.
Overall Casting Grade: B+

Hailee Steinfeld as Esmerelda
Appearance: B+
Performance: B
Thoughts: Maybe a bit young and less sultry than I envisioned the character, but Steinfeld did a pretty solid job.
Overall Casting Grade: B

Aaron Taylor-Johnson as Phoebus
Appearance: B+
Performance: B-
Thoughts: Aaron looks the part, but that's about it for me. It just didn't seem like his genre - he felt a bit too modern.
Overall Casting Grade: B

Christopher Walken as Judge Claude Frollo
Appearance: B+
Performance: A
Thoughts: Few can chew the scenery like Walken, and that's exactly what this role required.
Overall Casting Grade: A-

Robert Sheehan  as Clopin
Appearance: B+
Performance: A
Thoughts: A small role, but Sheehan made a big impact.
Overall Casting Grade: A-

Bernard Hill as The Archdeacon
Appearance: B
Performance: B-
Thoughts: Hill didn't make much an impact in his small amount of screen time. Hill is a good actor and does what he can, but it's an under-written part.
Overall Casting Grade: B-

Charlie Murphy as Florica
Appearance: B
Performance: B+
Thoughts: A small but pivotal role. She gets the one big scene, and does well.
Overall Casting Grade: B+

Santiago Cabrera as Jehan
Appearance: B+
Performance: C+
Thoughts: A smaller part than Murphy had, Cabrera looks the part but doesn't have to act much.
Overall Casting Grade: B-

Overall Film Casting Grade: B+

RED WOLF: WANDERER

Tatanka Means as William Talltrees
Appearance: A
Performance: A-
Thoughts: Means has made a no-name Marvel hero his own over the course of the two films.
Overall Casting Grade: A

Jessica Matten as Moonstar
Appearance: A
Performance: B+
Thoughts: She looks the part pretty much perfectly. It is a bit difficult to judge the performance since she is only in one sequence, but that one sequence is a highlight of the film.
Overall Casting Grade: A-

Keith Jardine as Bulldozer
Appearance: A-
Performance: C+
Thoughts: No acting required here, just the requirement of looking like a tough dude - which Jardine does well enough.
Overall Casting Grade: B

Michael Horse as Thomas Talltrees / Owayadata
Appearance: A-
Performance: B
Thoughts: A smaller role than the first film, but I still liked Horse here as his cameo added a little dramatic weight.
Overall Casting Grade: B+

Overall Film Casting Grade: A-

WATCH DOGS

Gerard Butler as Aiden Pearce
Appearance: B-
Performance: C-
Thoughts: I like Gerard Butler, but I didn't buy him as a hacker at all. He was good at the revenge stuff, but he was a bad choice for this IP.
Overall Casting Grade: C

Willem Dafoe as Damien Brenks
Appearance: B
Performance: B
Thoughts: Dafoe felt a tad old for the part, but he did feel like a better fit than Butler.
Overall Casting Grade: B

Al Pacino as Dermot "Lucky" Quinn
Appearance: B
Performance: C-
Thoughts: Pacino as a gangster felt like typecasting, and as an Irish gangster felt like bad typecasting
Overall Casting Grade: C

Daisy Ridley as Clara Lille
Appearance: B-
Performance: C-
Thoughts: The character feels like an under-developed Girl with the Dragon Tattoo ripoff and Ridley is not talented enough of an actress to overcome weak character writing.
Overall Casting Grade: C

John Cho as Jordy Chin
Appearance: B
Performance: B
Thoughts: Chin is a weakly written character, but Cho is a good actor and sells the role enough to work for the most part.
Overall Casting Grade: B

Lea Seydoux as Nicole Pearce
Appearance: B-
Performance: C-
Thoughts: In what world is the French-accented Seydoux the sister of Gerard Butler?
Overall Casting Grade: C

Julian Hilliard as Jackson
Appearance: B-
Performance: C
Thoughts: Not much of a character really.
Overall Casting Grade: C

Halston Owen as Lena
Appearance: B
Performance: C
Thoughts: Like Hilliard as Jackson, there really isn't much acting required.
Overall Casting Grade: C

Tom Ellis as Maurice Vega
Appearance: B
Performance: C+
Thoughts: Ellis doesn't feel like much of a street tough, even if he looks a fair amount like the video game character.
Overall Casting Grade: B-

Robert Wisdom as Mayor Donovan Rushmore
Appearance: A
Performance: B-
Thoughts: A weakly written role, but Wisdom does as much as anyone else could do with the script he was given.
Overall Casting Grade: B+

Overall Film Casting Grade: C

THE SPECTRE

Nicolas Cage as Jim Corrigan / The Spectre
Appearance: B+
Performance: A-
Thoughts: Cage hams things up when appropriate as the Spectre, but also feels at home as the detective Corrigan.
Overall Casting Grade: A-

Marlon Wayans as Waylon Grant
Appearance: C
Performance: B+
Thoughts: I was surprised that I liked Wayans in this role as much as I did. The character is fairly standard, but I liked his chemistry with Cage.
Overall Casting Grade: B

Marton Csokas as Gaspar Bence
Appearance: B
Performance: B+
Thoughts: Csokas' Bence is incredibly unlikable, making for a good villain you love to hate.
Overall Casting Grade: B+

Heather Graham as Clarice Corrigan
Appearance: B-
Performance: B+
Thoughts: She doesn't have a ton of screen time, but it was nice to see a glimpse of the classic charming Heather Graham we used to see more of.
Overall Casting Grade: B

Michael Berryman as The Phantom Stranger
Appearance: B+
Performance: B+
Thoughts: He continued to bring the other-worldly quality that he debuted in Swamp Thing 2.
Overall Casting Grade: B+

Overall Film Casting Grade: B+

DUKE NUKEM

John Cena as Duke Nukem
Appearance: A
Performance: A
Thoughts: Cena is simply the perfect choice for Duke Nukem, and probably the only actor working today who could reasonably play the part.
Overall Casting Grade: A

Carl Weathers as General Graves
Appearance: C
Performance: B
Thoughts: Clearly not wholly based on the game character, but it was nice to see Weathers in a big film again.
Overall Casting Grade: B-

Katrina Bowden as Shelly/Kitty
Appearance: B+
Performance: B
Thoughts: Not a lot required here other than looking good on a stripper stage, but Bowden made the role work well enough.
Overall Casting Grade: B

Overall Film Casting Grade: A-

AMITYVILLE

Nick Robinson as Ronald "Butch" DeFeo Jr.
Appearance: B+
Performance: A
Thoughts: He looks the part, but also acted the hell out of the role.

Chris Bauer as Ronald “Big Ronnie” DeFeo Sr.
Appearance: B
Performance: B+

Appearance: B
Performance: B+
Thoughts: Ringwald gave her best performance in decades here.

Thoughts: Nelisse impressed me a lot here having not been familiar before this one. Her role was a bit tricky, but she was really good.
Overall Casting Grade: A-

Violet McGraw as Allison DeFeo
Appearance: B+
Performance: B
Thoughts: A slightly smaller role, but she sold it.
Overall Casting Grade: B+

Julian Hilliard as Marc DeFeo
Appearance: C+
Performance: B
Thoughts: Maybe not a perfect fit physically, but Hilliard is definitely growing as a young talent.
Overall Casting Grade: B-

Luke Dodge as John DeFeo
Appearance: B
Performance: B
Thoughts: It's one of the smaller roles in the film, but Dodge gets a few good moments to show his young talent.
Overall Casting Grade: B

Stephen McHattie as Peter DeFeo
Appearance: B-
Performance: B+
Thoughts: McHattie doesn't look a ton like his real life counterpart, but he has one of those faces that your just believe on screen.
Overall Casting Grade: B

Dean Norris as William Weber
Appearance: B+
Performance: B+
Thoughts: A small role in the final part of the film, but Norris completely sells the type of lawyer who would represent someone like DeFeo.
Overall Casting Grade: B+

Overall Film Casting Grade: A-

THE IMMORTAL IRON FIST

Luke Bracey as Danny Rand / Iron Fist
Appearance: A
Performance: B
Thoughts: Not the most charismatic or talented actor around, but Bracey actually did a decent job and is a great physical match for the role.
Overall Casting Grade: B+

Henry Golding as Jimmy Woo
Appearance: B+
Performance: B+
Thoughts: Golding impressed here after his disasterous turn as Snake Eyes. He pulled off a good mix of action, comedy and drama.
Overall Casting Grade: B+

Jackie Chan as Lei Kung
Appearance: C+
Performance: B
Thoughts: Chan lends some star power to the film in a supporting role.
Overall Casting Grade: B

Lee Byung-hun as Master Khan
Appearance: B
Performance: B+
Thoughts: While he wasn't asked to do as much as he is capable of, Lee Byung-hun does a good job as the villain here.

Thoughts: Boneta brought a lot of charm to his role, making White Tiger instantly likable.

Overall Casting Grade: B-

Overall Film Casting Grade: B+

Overall Casting Grade: B

Overall Film Casting Grade: B+

Performance: B
Thoughts: Glen Powell manages to make an underwritten part memorable with his natural charm.
