The Roundup with Jeff Stockton (Season 29 Round 10)

The clock has finally run out on the poor box office of Season 29. Here's The Roundup....

3. Female Directors
I have no hard figures to back up my case here, but this season has to be considered a bit of a milestone for female filmmakers. Six female directors had films released this season, half of which were LRF debuts. On top of that, I believe there were seven films released this season with female writers as well.

2. GRA Races
I think the GRA races will be interesting and could have some unpredictable moments. I imagine the major categories will be a four film race between Murder Mysteries, The Champ, The Dogs of Winter and Starkweather based on the Metascores. But that leaves some categories in interesting positions, like with Murder Mysteries - the best reviewed film of the season - not having a leading actress at all. Should be a fun awards season.

1. Spider-Man: Requiem
Killing Gwen Stacy was inevitable, but killing her halfway through a movie was a pretty shocking move. I liked how Requiem wrapped up the Norman Osborn storyline while presenting a couple characters who could become villains in the future.

3. Best Actress GRA
This category is bound to weak as usual, but it should be interesting to see who gets nominated since some of the best reviewed films of the season did not have lead actresses. Don't be surprised if a film or two that aren't typical awards fare sneak in a nomination in the Best Actress category.

2. Novel Adaptations
While this season was 50/50 at the box office for novel adaptations, the critic scores are telling to the quality. The average Metascore between the eight novel adaptations this season was just 47. That isn't horrible, but The Dogs of Winter is clearly bringing up that average. Take that film out of the picture and that average drops down to 41.

1. Profits
Spider-Man: Requiem saved this season from being the least profitable in LRF history. It's still the second worst in terms of profits though. The studio will obviously be looking to bounce back next season with its historic 30th season.
