Reaction: Another novel adaptation bites the dust. This season hasn't been quite as bad as some other seasons on that front, but this is still the third novel adaptation of Season 29 to bomb at the box office (more on that in this round's Box Office Breakdown).
"While the production design and Sally Potter's direction are the saving grace, the rest of the movie of In Five Years is a frustrating use of what could be prime source material for a more impressive film." - David Knight, Toronto Star
"In Five Years felt artificial to me as an audience member. The characters are very one-note and the story doesn't do much with any of them despite a decent set-up. The novel itself feels confused about which plot thread is the most important, and this adaptation has the same problem." - Leslie Vandergort, Minneapolis Star Tribune
"This film (and probably the novel it is based on) has no clue what to do with its characters and their relationships with each other. The characters make baffling decisions and all come across as selfish throughout the entire running time. The film presumably wants us to like Dannie, but you could have fooled me. And don't even get me started on Dannie and Bella's doctor in the ending! A better planned adaptation would have cut that out. And worse than all that, the story does nothing interesting or entertaining with its time jump concept. It is a good concept, but nothing happens with it." - Cal Crowe, Washington Globe
Rated R for sexual content and thematic material
