Plot: Edie Sedgwick (Suki Waterhouse) is at the funeral of her brother Francis. She and her father Fuzzy (David Strathairn) get into an argument. Edie blames Fuzzy for Francis comitting suicide, while Fuzzy inquires as to whether Edie has been taking her medications. Edie leaves the funeral and moves to New York City to pursue a career in modeling.
Edie's friend Chuck Wein (Sebastian Stan) moves to New York with her and begins operating as her modeling promoter. They go to a party one night where they meet artist and avant-garde filmmaker Andy Warhol (Jared Leto). Warhol is intrigued by Sedgwick's high society background and beauty and invites her and Chuck to visit his art studio, The Factory, the next day.
When Chuck and Edie visit The Factory, they find Warhol in the middle of making a movie. Warhol decides to put Edie in the movie. Edie goes on to appear in several of Warhol's projects alongside Rene Ricard (Jeremy Irvine) and he begins to view her as a muse. Edie and Chuck become a part of the tightly-knit social scene at the Factory. At a party Paul Morrissey (Michael Pitt) introduces Edie to folk singer Bob Dylan (Shia LaBeouf). Edie and Dylan begin a relationship, which slowly causes Warhol to become jealous. Edie also becomes more and more dependent on drugs.
Edie's career as model begins to take off as she and the others around Warhol's Factory routinely make the news. Vogue Magazine even names Edie as an "It" girl. Following a fight with Warhol where he feels that she has chosen Dylan over him, Edie begins staying with Dylan at the Chelsea Hotel. Edie becomes pregnant with Dylan's child. Dylan convinces her to get an abortion by offering to put together a mainstream film project for the two of them, but she wouldn't be able to be in it if she is pregnant.
Following the abortion, Dylan becomes distant with Edie. While Edie continues to stay at the Chelsea Hotel, Dylan's appearances become more sporadic. One day, Warhol shows up at her door. Warhol tells her that he just found out that Dylan has just married another woman and moved out to California. Edie slams the door in Warhol's face. She begins to abuse barbituates more than ever and begins sleeping with Dylan's friend Bob Neuwirth (Toby Kebbell).
Edie tries to forge a legitimate acting career, but she keeps getting turned down for roles. She finally finds work on an underground film. One night she accidentally sets fire to her room at the Chelsea Hotel when she passes out while high on drugs. She visits her father in California, and he sends her to a psychiatric hospital for her drug and mental health issues. While in the hospital, she meets and falls in love with another patient, Michael Post (Jim Sturgess).
After leaving the hospital, Edie begins abusing barbituates and alcohol again. One day she goes to a fashion show. After the show, she goes to a party where she gets drunk and makes a scene. She gets thrown out of the party. She then calls Michael to pick her up. One the way home, Edie tells Michael that their marriage may have been a mistake. In the morning, Michael wakes up and finds Edie dead.
