Plot: The fearless general Spartan Kratos (Tom Hardy) is now a warrior tormented by his nightmares and reduced to servant of the gods. In more glorious times his conquests were innumerable, and his fame grew dramatically, but when Kratos found himself facing an army of barbarians so numerous as to decimate his army, he finally experienced defeat. A step away from death, Kratos saw no other hope but to implore Ares's help. Ares (Sean Bean), The God of War, in return for the Spartan promise of total loyalty, gave him the lethal Blades of Chaos and the ability to triumph over every enemy.

With the intent to create the perfect warrior, Ares tried in every way to blind Kratos with an uncontrollable thirst for blood, to the point of taking him by deception to kill his own wife and his only daughter. Because no one could ever forget his terrible actions, a curse meant that Kratos' skin was forever covered by the ashes of the two women, condemning him to have a ghostly and even more sinister appearance.

Worn out of guilt, the "Ghost of Sparta" fell even more under the yoke of the Olympian Gods, who, with the promise of freeing him from his painful memories, asked him for loyalty to make him a slave to their whims.

After the bloody battle of Attica against the Persian invaders and against the Basilisk, a horrible and gigantic monster, the Spartan sees the sun, or the god Helium, fall. Informed by Eos (Sarah Gadon), he learns that, in the absence of sunlight, that is of Helios (Pedro Pascal), the deities began to weaken, and Morpheus, the god of dreams, could take the upper hand.

Kratos then goes to the temple of Elio to awaken the Steeds of Fire and to be led into Hades, where the Sun god should be. Reached Charon (Doug Jones), the ferryman of souls, he attacks Kratos, unworthy to be in that place, he defeats it and throws it into Tartarus. Here, Kratos notes the lack of Atlas, one of the Titans, the ancient masters of the world.

Rising through the Ade with many difficulties, Kratos again hires a duel with Charon and, thanks to the skills gained from the last fight, finally manages to kill him to continue the journey. Thus he reached the temple of Persephone, where he saw the ghost of his daughter, Calliope (Samara Lee), playing the flute.

Chasing the child, Kratos goes inside the temple and reaches Persephone (Olga Kurylenko), who orders him to purify himself before entering the Elysian Fields (the place where souls live in peace) and to be able to embrace his daughter. The Spartan is free, therefore, of all his wickedness and his weapons in order to finally find himself with his beloved daughter.

In the Elysian Fields, Persephone announces to Kratos his evil plan of revenge against Hades, who held her captive, and of all the Gods, who had not moved a finger to help her. Unfortunately, Persephone's plan foresees the destruction of the whole Earth, thanks to the destruction, through the light of Elio, of the pillar that supports the planet. Without his wickedness, Kratos could remain in the Elysian Fields with his daughter, but he will not be able to stop Persephone. Kratos must choose between the love of his daughter or the salvation of humanity. Performing a great sacrifice, he abandons his daughter and regains his weapons, his abilities and his cruelty.

Thus he engages in a battle against Persephone, using the divine power of Helius to weaken it and finally hit it with the Zeus Glove; the clash ends with the death of Persephone and the victory of the Spartan, who, with the help of the Glove of Zeus, binds Atlas to the world and forces him to support him for all eternity.

Finally, freeing Elio and the Destrieri del Fuoco, flees from Hades, but, tried by the continuous battles and the permanence of his nightmares, he throws himself to commit suicide from Elio's cart on the ground, but before crashing to the ground, Athena (Claire Foy) and Elio save him the life.
