Reaction: Certainly not the kind of numbers we were looking for in the opening round of the season. The Young Pretender has become our fourth lowest grossing film in the historical genre, out of 23 films. The film has also become the third consecutive box office bomb to feature young star Nicholas Hoult, joining Alternative and AGOS: A Game of Survival.

"The Young Pretender is a competent film about an incompetent historical figure. Nicholas Hoult ably handles the lead role of a man whose ambitions far outweighed his abilities. Hoult is joined by a solid, and lively, supporting cast in this one." - Dave Cone, New York Post

"Tom Hooper is not a director who brings any kind of visual flair to a film. That, coupled with a fairly by the books historical story, results in a fairly traditional film that doesn't really add anything to the genre." - Sean Williamson, Toronto Star

"Chad Taylor's script paints an interesting portrait of a man with failed ambitions. The film isn't without its shortcomings, but I believe it works more than it doesn't." - Chris Mears, Slashfilm

Rated PG-13 for historical wartime violence and some thematic material.
