Welcome to the Season 22 Golden Reel Awards ceremony. Tonight we will be celebrating the best Last Resort Films releases of the studio's 22nd season. Tonight there are 14 films vying for the 13 prestigious awards on the ling this evening. The nominees are led by a quartet of films taking up most of the nominations. Black Hole, from Death Dream duo David Robert Mitchel and John Malone, and Open Hearts lead the nominations with 10 a piece, but not far behind them are the period gangster film Broadway and Caesar Part II, the sequel to Season 18's Best Picture winner.
AND NOW FOR THE AWARDS....
AND THE AWARD GOES TO....
Black Hole earns its first award of the night in the first category, giving it 9 more chances to take home gold. A John Malone-penned film has now won the Best Production Design award in 3 of the last 6 seasons.
AND THE AWARD GOES TO....
Make it 2-for-2 for Black Hole as it takes home the first two awards of the night. This is the first time that a film has won both Best Production Design and Best Soundtrack to open a ceremony since Season 9 when American Dream accomplished the feat. The only other film to do so was Cat People in Season 4.
AND THE AWARD GOES TO....
Elektra takes home the award for Most Wanted Sequel. Elektra is still nominated for a couple for more awards tonight, so it still can take home more gold. This is the third Marvel Universe film from writer to win this award, joining X-Men in Season 15 and The Punisher in Season 18. Overall it is the 7th film in the Marvel Universe to win the award, only one less than the DC Comics Universe has won over the seasons.
AND THE AWARD GOES TO....
In just the third time in LRF history, the Best Ensemble Cast nominees were the exact same as the Best Picture nominees. Broadway previously missed out on Best Production Design and Best Soundtrack tonight, making it 1-for-3 on the ceremony. With 8 total nominations on the night, it still has plenty of chances to take home more trophies. This is the fourth film written by Chad Taylor to win this particular award, but just the first since Season 12.
AND THE AWARD GOES TO....
Alexander Skarsgard has finally won his first Golden Reel Award in his 13th film for the studio. He was previously nominated for Best Starring Couple once and Best Ensemble Cast three times (including tonight). This marks Elizabeth Olsen's 5th GRA trophy, and her second for Best Starring Couple. This is the first win on the night for Open Hearts after striking out in the Best Soundtrack and Best Ensemble Cast categories. The film still have 7 more chances though, including Best Actress and Actor for Olsen and Skarsgard, respectively.
AND THE AWARD GOES TO....
Season 16 Best Villain nominee Viggo Mortensen (for The Little Girl Who Was Too Fond of Matches) finally wins the award, his first GRA trophy. Surprisingly this is just the second time a film written by DC Comics Universe stalwart APJ has won this award. The previous win was all the way back in Season 4 for Caleb Landry Jones' first performance as the Joker in Batman: Gotham Knight. APJ's fourth Batman entry can still win one more award tonight, in the next category: Best Adaptation.
AND THE AWARD GOES TO....
Black Hole takes home its 3rd trophy of the night, with four more nominations still left for the film - including Best Picture. This makes the whopping 8th Best Adaptation for writer John Malone, having previously won the award in Seasons 2, 3, 5, 6, 12, 17 and 20. In second place in the category is Mo Buck with just 3 trophies (nobody else has more than two). The night is now done for Batman: In The Shadows, winning one award out of three nominations.
AND THE AWARD GOES TO....
Caesar Part II gets its first win of the night winning Best Original Story after previous nominations in Best Production Design, Most Wanted Sequel and Best Ensemble Cast, making it just 1-for-4. The first Caesar film also won this award, which was also its first award of the Season 18 Golden Reel Awards ceremony. Caesar still has a chance to win more GRA trophies than the first Caesar film, with nominations in four more categories on the night. The ceremony is done for Northrock, failing to win in either of the two categories it was nominated in.
AND THE AWARD GOES TO....
The clear front runner for the award in the eyes of most critics, Rebecca Hall wins her first GRA. She was previously nominated as part of the ensemble cast of Mass Effect 3 - Part 2. Open Hearts now has two trophies on the night, with nominations remaining in every category left in the ceremony.
AND THE AWARD GOES TO....
Cillian Murphy wins in his first individual acting GRA nomination. He was previously nominated for Best Ensemble Cast three times (including earlier in this ceremony), winning it alongside the rest of the ensemble cast of And Then There Were None at the 2nd Golden Reel Award ceremony. This is the second trophy for Caesar Part II after winning Best Original Story.
AND THE AWARD GOES TO....
Elizabeth Olsen has won the Best Actress GRA for the second time in her career with her win for Open Hearts. She previously won in Season 16 for her performance in Coma. This is also the second award for Olsen on the night after winning Best Starring Couple alongside co-star Alexander Skarsgard. Olsen's 5th GRA trophy in her career is the 3rd on the night for Open Hearts - tying Black Hole for the ceremony lead.
AND THE AWARD GOES TO....
Leonard DiCaprio has just won his 4th Best Actor GRA in his 5th nomination (out of just 6 films). Caesar Part II has now tied Black Hole and Open Hearts for the most trophies on the evening with just two categories remaining (which all three films are nominated in).
AND THE AWARD GOES TO....
Quentin Tarantino has put a wrench in the evening for Black Hole, Caesar Part II and Open Hearts by snagging the Best Director GRA for his work on Broadway. It is just the second trophy for Broadway, after winning Best Ensemble Cast and losing in 4 other categories. This was Tarantino's first win and his first nomination. Everything will now come down to the final category, Best Picture, to see which film will come away with the most trophies (unless Broadway takes Best Picture as well, which would results in a 4-way tie for first place between each of the four Best Picture nominees).
AND THE AWARD GOES TO....
Caesar Part II has finished the night with the most trophies after taking home the biggest of them all, Best Picture. The film's four trophies match the number that the first Caesar film won back in Season 18. In fact, Caesar Part II won 3 of the same 4 awards as its predecessor (Caesar won Best Director, while Caesar Part II won Best Supporting Actor). The writers of Caesar Part II, John Malone and Chad Taylor, have now combined to win Best Picture in 12 of LRF's 22 seasons (technically 7 trophies for Malone, 7 trophies for Taylor, including the two they now share for Caesar and Caesar Part II.
Congratulations to all of the winners! That's a wrap on the 22nd season in the world of Last Resort Films. The Season 23 LRF Comic-Con will be on May 22nd. In the meantime, stay tuned for a special GRA-edition of The Numbers on Monday.
