For the upcoming 22nd Golden Reel Awards, it is the four Best Picture nominees (Black Hole, Broadway, Caesar Part II, Open Hearts) dominating the nominations, snagging 36 of the possible 56 nominations. For this
awards-centric edition of The Roundup,
I will go through each category and tell you who I think should win the
award, who I think actually will win the award, and who I think has no
chance to win - followed by a brief thought on the category this
season.
BEST PRODUCTION DESIGN
Who Should Win: Northrock
Who Will Win: Broadway
No Chance: Black Hole
Thought(s): Northrock has a gorgeous poster that captures the imagination and welcomes the audience to the world of the film. Broadway will probably win though with its period gangster look. I actually like the production design of Black Hole a lot, it just feels like an outlier compared to the other films.
BEST SOUNDTRACK
Who Should Win: Black Hole
Who Will Win: Black Hole
No Chance: Elektra
Thought(s): This one's got to go to Black Hole in my opinion. It was just great for the material. I'm putting Elektra at the bottom of the list, if for no reason other than that it doesn't work as well without being paired with the film itself as the other soundtracks nominated.
MOST WANTED SEQUEL
Who Should Win: Batman: In The Shadows OR Elektra
Who Will Win: Caesar Part II
No Chance: Fantastic Four: Doom
Thought(s): At the end of the day, FF: Doom just isn't as good of a film as the other nominees. I think Caesar Part II will win because of its love from critics, but I still view this as a category for more blockbuster type films, and Batman 4 and Elektra were the two best in that format this season, so one of them should win.
BEST ENSEMBLE CAST
Who Should Win: Black Hole
Who Will Win: Broadway
No Chance: N/A
Thought(s): This category is comprised of the four Best Picture nominees, so they all have a shot. Broadway has the most star power across the board, so it will probably win, but my favorite ensemble was Black Hole. Sure, it lacked star power (although with two nominations, Sydney Sweeney is blowing up big time) but every character was interesting.
BEST STARRING COUPLE
Who Should Win: Elizabeth Olsen & Alexander Skarsgard - Open Hearts
Who Will Win: Elizabeth Olsen & Alexander Skarsgard - Open Hearts
No Chance: Timothee Chalamet & Katherine Langford - The Betrothed
Thought(s): Films in the Romance genre tend to garner a lot of nominations in this category, but I can't picture The Betrothed taking home this award. Skarsgard and Olsen lit up the screen with their chemistry in Open Hearts
BEST VILLAIN
Who Should Win: Skyler Gisondo - Black Hole
Who Will Win: Viggo Mortensen - Batman: In The Shadows
No Chance: Skyler Gisondo - Black Hole
Thought(s): I loved Gisondo's performance in Black Hole as the tragic Dave. I think he should win, but I don't think he has a shot. Mortensen has all the right pieces to win this one.
BEST ADAPTATION
Who Should Win: Black Hole
Who Will Win: Black Hole
No Chance: The Betrothed & Batman: In The Shadows
Thought(s): I really had a hard time deciding who I thought should and will win in this category. It was clearly between Black Hole and Open Hearts. Ultimately I ended up going with Black Hole because I liked the film slightly more and John Malone has a good track record in the category.
BEST ORIGINAL STORY
Who Should Win: Caesar Part II
Who Will Win: Caesar Part II
No Chance: Northrock & Audible
Thought(s): Caesar Part II is the clear frontrunner here. Broadway might pull off an upset, but I doubt it and Audible and Northrock don't have the same chance of doing that.
BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS
Who Should Win: Rebecca Hall - Open Hearts
Who Will Win: Rebecca Hall - Open Hearts
No Chance: Riley Keough - Odysseus - Part Two
Thought(s): Rebecca Hall deserves this one after giving one of the season's best performances in Open Hearts.
BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR
Who Should Win: Miles Teller - Open Hearts
Who Will Win: Cillian Murphy - Caesar Part II
No Chance: Toby Wallace - Black Hole
Thought(s): I'd be shocked if Wallace won this one in his first LRF role. Murphy was obviously great, so I think he will probably end up winning, but Teller gave what I consider the best performance of the season, so he deserves it more.
BEST ACTRESS
Who Should Win: Elizabeth Olsen - Open Hearts
Who Will Win: Margot Robbie - Broadway
No Chance: Katherine Langford - The Betrothed
Thought(s): I'm honestly shocked that Katherine Langford managed to secure a nomination over Thomasin McKenzie and Sofia Boutella, so she's not winning this one. Robbie's star power might give her a leg up to win, but I think Olsen earned it.
BEST ACTOR
Who Should Win: Alexander Skarsgard - Open Hearts
Who Will Win: Leonardo DiCaprio - Caesar Part II
No Chance: Mahershala Ali - Audible
Thought(s): DiCaprio won last time he played Caesar, so he's a safe choice to win again. Skarsgard though really showed another side of his talent in Open Hearts to the point that I think he should be the one to take the statue home.
BEST DIRECTOR
Who Should Win: Christopher Nolan - Caesar Part II
Who Will Win: Christopher Nolan - Caesar Part II
No Chance: N/A
Thought(s):Whatever film takes home Best Picture will probably the same film that wins this award. My money is on Nolan, but it really could go to any of the four.
BEST PICTURE
Who Should Win: Black Hole
Who Will Win: Caesar Part II
No Chance: Open Hearts
Thought(s): Upon further review, Black Hole is officially my favorite film of the season, but Caesar is second place in my eyes. I would like Black Hole to win, but I would not bet against Caesar Part II.
BEST PRODUCTION DESIGN
