Reaction: Like its predecessor, The Smoke in the Red Country, did set the world on fire but did manage a nice profit for the studio. The genre change thankfully didn't ruin this film's chances like it historically has with genre-switched sequels.

"Imagine Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy getting blackout drunk with Primer and Tenet, and you’re halfway to understanding The Ghost Connection — and I mean that in the best way possible. Tomas Alfredson serves up cold, stylish paranoia with a quantum twist, and Gerard Butler gives a haunted, all-in performance that feels like his career’s reset button. Sure, it’s a lot to chew on (and yeah, you might need a Reddit thread after), but this is bold, brainy sci-fi that refuses to dumb itself down. A real trip — literally and figuratively." - Richard Harrow, The Boston Chronicle

"While being heavy handed and front loaded AF, Butler helps guides a (maybe) confused audience through a gripping time travel/time loop action movie that actually embraces Teiko's signature style. Though at the end, it leaves room to become more solid if it feels the need to continue further." - Alonso Webb-Shooster, Sci-Fi Gen

"The Ghost Connection is an ambitious but often overreaching sequel that trades the taut, boots-on-the-ground realism of The Smoke in the Red Country for a dense, labyrinthine narrative of time travel and metaphysical espionage. That said, the film is often frustrating and exhausting - especially its length - even though Gerard Butler gives one of his better performances." - Sasha Greene, NeonVice.com

Rated R for strong violence
