From the Desk of Alfie Ellison, VP of International Development: Monstrillio

Last Resorts Film is honored to announce that Academy Award-winning filmmaker Guillermo del Toro has acquired the rights to adapt Gerardo Sámano Córdova’s 2023 breakout novel Monstrilio into a feature film. Del Toro, known for blending myth, grief, and the grotesque into unforgettable cinematic experiences (Pan's Labyrinth, Frankenstein, Mexican Gothic), will write and direct the adaptation for LRF.

Part psychological tragedy, part horror fable, Monstrilio tells the story of a mother shattered by the death of her young son — and the unspeakable act she commits in her grief. In a desperate attempt to hold on to what remains of him, she removes the lone lung from his body and begins to feed it. What follows is a genre-defying exploration of loss, transformation, and the monstrous things love can become.

Preliminary talks are underway with Adria Arjona and Oscar Isaac to star, marking what could be a powerful reunion between Isaac and del Toro following their long admiration for each other’s work. Neither actor is confirmed, but industry sources say both are enthusiastic about the project's emotional and surreal landscape.

“This is a story about love twisted beyond recognition — a tale that is intimate, brutal, and strangely beautiful,” said a Last Resorts Film spokesperson. “Guillermo del Toro is the only director who could balance that darkness with such profound empathy.”

With Monstrilio, LRF continues its commitment to bold, auteur-driven storytelling that pushes the boundaries of genre and form. This marks a return to a more intimate, character-focused horror for del Toro — a film that promises to be as emotionally devastating as it is visually unforgettable.
