During their celebrations, some members of the group conspire to prank Hannah, who is romantically interested in Mike. While Josh and Chris are passed out drunk in the kitchen, Mike invites Hannah to his room. Unbeknownst to him, Jessica, Emily, Matthew and Ashley hide under the bed and in the closet filming what's going on. While Mike convinces her to start taking off her clothes, Jessica accidentally reveals the group's presence and in doing so, humiliates Hannah just as Samantha bursts in to warn her, discovering it was too late.
Hannah runs out of the lodge and into the snowy woods as everyone runs after her, trying to apologize and persuade her to return. Beth suddenly appears after hearing the commotion and asks them what happened. Upon learning that Hannah has been humiliated, he angrily scolds them and chases Hannah. As Beth finds her way through the woods, she finally finds Hannah crying in the middle of a small clearing and comforts her. Suddenly, they hear a violent noise and run away from a seemingly invisible pursuer.

As they are cornered on the edge of a cliff, Hannah slips and falls holding Beth's hand, taking her down with her. Beth manages to cling to a large branch on the edge of the cliff, holding Hannah with her other hand. An unknown man crouches on the edge of the cliff and holds out his hand to help, but Hannah and Beth both fall to apparent death, never to be seen again.

On the one-year anniversary of Hannah and Beth Washington's disappearance, the remaining friends accept Josh's invitation to return to the mountain and head there and meet at a cabin before heading to the house. Samantha is watching a video on her cell phone in which Josh announces that he is inwardly destroyed by the disappearance of his sisters, but that he prefers not to think about it. Samantha has arrived outside the residence and finds a note from Chris, instructing her to climb the front gate while it appears that someone is spying on her. The girl reaches the chalet, where she meets Chris. The two go to the hut by cable car. Meanwhile, Emily and Matthew are on their way to the cabin from the front gate, but when they are about to arrive, they run into Mike, who scares them by making a stupid joke. After the meeting, Emily remembers she has to tell Samantha something and Matthew takes care of the bags to carry. Matt, after bringing everything to the cabin, goes to Ashley, who is watching Mike and Emily (ex-boyfriends) flirt in the distance. Mike goes instead to Jessica: his new girlfriend. After playing snowballs, the two join their mates at the cabin, where the friends witness an argument between Emily and Jessica for futile reasons.

After the fight with Emily, she and Matthew go to get the bag that Emily had forgotten on arrival at the cabin while Samntha greets everyone and goes to take a bath upstairs; instead, Jessica and Mike go to the shed with the keys given to them by Josh. On the way, however, they are forced to go through a disturbing-looking mine, not realizing that they are always being spied on by a mysterious figure. After returning to the cabin, Josh helps Samantha find the boiler in the basement to heat the bathroom water. After operating the boiler, a masked figure chases Samantha and Josh, but it turns out to be Chris, who wanted to play a joke on them. The three join Ashley, deciding they want to conduct a séance to communicate with Josh's deceased sisters.

Meanwhile, as Mike and Jessica flirt as they arrive at the shed, where they are abruptly interrupted by a broken window: it is Jessica's previously lost phone. Jessica interprets what happened as a joke in bad taste and leaves the shed to curse the alleged "culprits". When she reenters, the glass behind her explodes and she is dragged away by a mysterious creature as she tries to cling to it but fails.

At the cabin, Ashley, Chris and Josh leave the séance after a few questions to Hannah's spirit. Josh in fact is convinced that one of the two is making fun of him. Going down to the library, they discover a message written in blood by the Washington twins.

Josh is grabbed by a mysterious individual, who also drags Ashley away. Chris breaks down the door, but as soon as he gets up, he is stunned by a punch in the forehead of the same guy who kidnapped Ashley and Josh a few minutes earlier. While Chris is looking for his friends he comes to an old warehouse and there he witnesses a creepy "Saw the Riddler" scene as Chris points out cursing. Ashley and Josh are in fact tied with a rope to a platform, threatened by a large circular saw. Chris will have to choose who to save and who to let die. While crying, the boy decides to free Ashley and let Josh die. This action leads Josh to be violently torn in two by the trap, and Chris and Ashley later flee in traumatism. When Matt and Emily are told what has happened, Chris and Ashley return to the cabin, while the engaged couple plans to leave Blackwood Pines. Noticing that the cable car is blocked, they are forced to go up a cliff to get to a control tower, from which they can call the police since there is no telephone line. Meanwhile, Mike chases the mysterious creature that has kidnapped Jessica to the mines. At one point he finds Jessica who has a wound in her leg and arm. The two plan to escape until they get on an old elevator. Suddenly there is a breakdown and she disappears as the elevator falls into the void. Mike tried to save the girl but he couldn't. The boy starts walking and comes to an old abandoned sanatorium (which appears to be someone's base of operations). Venturing out, Mike also finds a wolf he manages to tame, along with some clues that reconstruct a gruesome story dating back to the 1952 Blackwood mine collapse. In 1952 there was a mining accident that resulted in miners trapped as a result a collapse. Experiments and studies were conducted on survivors by sanatorium doctors, and a reporter had trouble trying to find out more about the cover-up.

Meanwhile Matthew and Emily manage to get to the control tower and call the police; however, the latter states that it will not intervene before dawn due to bad weather conditions. Subsequently, a deer disconnects a power cable and the line is interrupted. Also, the control tower begins to collapse. Here, Matthew decides to rescue Emily who is falling after holding on to a dangling piece of wood. However, Matthew is attacked by the mysterious figure who attacked Jessica earlier, but only manages to defend himself with a gun-flare. Unfortunately, however, he will be hanged from a hook by his neck while Emily will also fall into the mines below her.

Samantha is taking a hot bath with earphones on and knows nothing of everything that is going on. She doesn't realize she's being spied on by the maniac who assaulted Josh, Ashley and Chris earlier - and who was spying on the latter. After the maniac leaves, the candles go out. Taking off the earphones, Samantha decides to get out of the tub and walk downstairs. Arriving in the projector room, Samantha learns (via video) of Josh's alleged death. A few seconds later, he makes an escape from the maniac and manages to hide. After the incident, Chris and Ashley go in search of Samantha, arriving in the basement of the cabin. Ashley manages to see the psychopath in her lab, but the pair are captured by the latter, which forces Chris to make another difficult choice: to shoot Ashley or himself - both threatened by two mini-saws over their heads. Mike, after leaving the sanatorium, joins Samantha The two reach the psychopath's laboratory together, where they discover that the latter is none other than Josh, eager for revenge for the death of his sisters a year ago. Josh had staged it all with the blood of some animals and had been able to afford the horror movie equipment thanks to the parental money and thanks to the cinema experience of his father (a successful director, as you can understand from the numerous awards displayed in the house. ). Angry at the staging, Chris and Mike (convinced of Josh's guilt for Jessica's death), take Josh to the old shed, where they tie him up.

Meanwhile, Emily is in the mines upside down and survived without severe physical damage. Making her way through the heights to climb and some debris, Emily meets an individual - known generically as: "the Stranger" (Callum Keith Rennie) - who helps her escape, saving her from a terrifying creature that soon appears trying to attack her.

Gathered at the hut, the friends are joined by the Stranger, who informs them of the presence of sinister creatures, called: "Wendigo" (in which the Native Americans Algochini and Cree believed), warning them not to go out at night unless armed and / or together. "The Stranger" decides to go hunting for the Wendigo who was chasing Emily; Chris decides to go with him despite his friends trying to dissuade him. Arriving at the shed, the two do not find Josh and are surprised by the Wendigo, who beheads the Stranger. Chris escapes managing to get to the door of the cabin but is taken by the creature just as he is entering the house. Mike tries to hold him back but has failed and is desperate at not being able to save him. Meanwhile, the Wendigo had taken Josh and carried him to the mines. In the dungeons, Mike decides to go to the sanatorium (so he can access the mines) in order to find Josh and get the key to the cable car, leading his group away from Blackwood. During the journey, Mike encounters all the Wendigos who had been locked up in the sanatorium cages by the Stranger. However, a fire occurs in the sanatorium: gunpowder from a shotgun found by Mike comes into contact with flammable liquid, burning an area of the sanatorium. The fire brings with it the life of a Wendigo, allowing Mike to escape.

Mike returns to Samantha, after he has managed to get the key to the cable car from the delusional Josh, then carried away by a Wendigo who appears to be his sister Hannah, with a butterfly tattoo on his arm. In turn, Mike and Samantha join the group - in the meantime they managed to reach the cabin through the mines.

All gathered in the living room, the group is attacked by three Wendigos. The first is beheaded by the Wendigo who with Hannah's tattoo: while the three beasts fight, Mike gets an idea: reach the light bulb and break it, then turn on the switch, starting a fire in the cabin, so as to kill the three monsters . After Ashley and Emily escape, Mike himself is forced to flee after breaking the light bulb and Samantha manages to turn on the switch and burn the cabin, killing all the monsters. Soon after, police helicopters arrive and the film ends with the closing credits, during which there is an interview with the survivors in which they tell what happened. Later, Josh, still alive, is seen feeding on human flesh: he is in the midst of his transformation into Wendigo. Josh will look at some police officers who have ventured into the mine, approaching hungry.

"While the film certainly has a convoluted story line, no doubt a side effect of the source material, it has a talented young cast and a creepy atmosphere that would have worked on the big screen."
