"American Dirt is a tense film. While not exactly thrilling or exciting, it is hard not to get swept up in the emotional and harrowing journey Diane Guerrero's Lydia undertakes over the course of the film." - Lisa Winger, Newsday
"Despite a strong lead performance from Diane Guerrero, American Dirt is a monotonous and repetitive story that leans too heavily toward disheartening and downbeat drama to be an enjoyable viewing experience." - Paul Roads, Medium
"A movie about one of the most controversial books in recent memory is almost destined to get people talking. I’ll admit, I haven’t read the book but if this movie is anything to go by, I must’ve missed something. Is it emotionally manipulative? At times. Does the cast do their best to make it work? Yes, they do. That alone is just enough for it to break even. Is it the best representation of Latinx culture? That’s up to you to decide." - Mitchell Walker, New York Times
