Reaction: Period dramas can often be box office poison, but this one ended up quite successful. After a rocky start with his first film (An Eye For An Eye), writer Wyatt Allen now has two profitable films in a row.
"Colin Farrell and Paul Giamatti knock the lead roles out of the ballpark with their performances in Whaling. Their chemistry helps make direction and writing that is good and make the whole thing great." - Samuel O'Brien, Sight and Sound Magazine
"On paper, Whaling had me intrigued going in. The performances were mostly solid across the board, although Cruz and Iacono seem out of their depths working with the immense talents around them. Noah Baumbach does not feel like a very natural choice for this period drama as director. All that said, I was mostly still into the story until the end, which left me highly disappointed and dissatisfied." - Brenton Smalls, Playboy
"Paul Giamatti is an actor best known for his supporting work but giving him a lead role often yields good results and Whaling is no different. Baumbach and Allen play to their star’s strengths as a ticking-time-bomb on the verge of a breakdown - and it doesn’t hurt that he has a perfect foil in the form of a charming Colin Farrell." - Kate Yarbrough, The Guardian
