Reaction: This one, with its star-studded cast, is definitely one of the more expensive mystery films made in some time. That expense could have cut into the possible profits, although at the same time it definitely would not have grossed so much without those stars.
"There’s a lot to like here: the soundtrack, the DiCaprio-Carrey interactions, the return of Rian Johnson to the noir genre. And it’s hard not to appreciate the originality in an off-kilter genre film like this. But...it does feel a little too cute in the end. I liked DiCaprio and Kendrick in their individual roles but something felt off about putting them together (perhaps the age gap, given where the story goes)." - Kate Yarbrough, The Guardian
"While not exactly a thrill-ride of a mystery, the premise was a unique one and holds up for the most part. The tone got far too jokey at times, which is not a strong-suit of its cast for the most part. Josh Gad feels like he belongs in a completely different movie than everyone else, and not all of the musical moments work, but in the end it's a mostly entertaining film with more bright spots and weak points." - Dave Manning, Ridgefield Press
"Despite strong performances in the primary roles from DiCaprio, Kendrick, Carrey and Crowe, the tone of Golden Girl never quite works or feels right. It's often too light and cutesy, with the stakes never feeling particularly high for a mystery film. And don't get me started on Josh Gad - the film comes to a grinding halt every time he hits the screen." - Brenton Smalls, Playboy
Rated R for violence, language and some sexual content
