Reaction: Talk about a close call! This film helps turn around the box office track record for both star Timothee Chalamet and writer Andrew Doster, both of whom have had some struggles in that department in recent seasons.

“I really loved the setting of this film, with 1920’s Hollywood. Sam Mendes does a wonderful job directing a large cast here. I was curious about Chalamet’s performance and initially I wasn’t sold, however it grew on me and I quite liked it. Tinseltown is one of Doster’s best works yet. No real stand outs cast wise but as an ensemble they work. - Jonah Wells, IndieWire

"Tinseltown is a bit too unfocused to fully work. The setting and the supporting ensemble are the strengths of the film, but Timothee Chalamet makes for an unlikable lead in this project that is unable to carry the story along when things slow down. If the film had focused more tightly on the central mystery of William Desmond Taylor's murder things would have worked better, but clearly writer Andrew Doster was too enraptured with the period Hollywood setting and it ended up getting in the way of the overall story." - Sam Morris, Oregonian

"Tinseltown is a GRA Ensemble award waiting to be delivered. Mendes creates a unique experience for the oldies. Chalament redeems himself with this role as he pulls a good performance against top talents like Chandler, Oldman, Newton, Iseman, Scodelario, Shipka, and mostly Fraser. While the story's been-there-been-that, the cast elevates the script to award contention." - Diana Powers, The Independent
