Welcome back for another edition of A Second Look with Jeff Stockton! In this segment I will take a "second look" at a past LRF release with a fresh set of eyes.
Andrew Garfield is back in theaters this round with The Long Way Home. He first debuted in LRF as Hugh Hefner in the biopic American Playboy. Released way back in Season 3, the film was well-received and quite successful at the box office. I remember liking the film, but not having a real strong opinion. Obviously Garfield was great, but the story seemed a bit too much of standard biopic fare.
Taking a second look at it now, my opinion is pretty similar to my initial reaction. However, I was even more impressed by Garfield's take as Hefner this time around. He gives the role a strong likability factor. The story covers some good highlights of Hefner's Playboy career. My biggest problem with the film now is that I wanted it to be bigger and delve deeper. The rest of the cast fares well and Chazelle fits the material perfectly.
