Plot: The film begins one evening with a tired farmer with a tired face named Butch Anderson (John Lithgow) who is undergoing a robbery and shoots the criminals with the rifle of warning shots to make the thieves flee. Finally we see the lord being joined by his sons Rick (John Gallagher Jr.) and Josie (Lauren German) and the three hug each other for the narrow escape. Dutch says thieves failed to steal anything. The next day Butch is working in his cornfield and is trying to scare the crows that are ruining the crop. While he is chasing the crows he has a heart attack and he falls, spearing himself in the rake that was on the ground. At the same time his son Rick was hoisting a scarecrow in the field while Josie in the distance witnessing the scene because at that moment she was going out after having prepared a lemonade for the two men. A few months go by and Rick and his sister Josie are still trying to overcome their grief as their father had always been a key figure for them, and money was running out. In the stories of Rick and Josie, it is clear, however, that since this scarecrow was created, they have no longer been visited by crows, foxes on their farm and above all no thief has ever tried to enter their property. Moreover it is seen that the two as time went by continued to make the scarecrow more and more disturbing and even frightening and adorned it with macabre objects. Every so often the two also have horrible nightmares in which the protagonists are the father and the scarecrow but despite this their bond with it is becoming strangely stronger. The puppet was made up of a gray woolen pitch with branches that formed a body and clothes made of animal skin colored black while the head was formed by a sack of lute containing something. In addition, animal teeth were inserted into the mouth and a necklace composed of large skewered insects was placed around the neck. The disturbing aspect was also given by a single eye made with a red button on the left side of the head with a reflection that seemed to always look at people. Although the Andersons' house was rather isolated, the other citizens looked at the two brothers with a wary look at their behavior after Butch's death. One evening while they were watching TV, they were overwhelmed by a gang of attackers and after torturing them to find out where the money was, they killed them. The strange thing is that a few days later the sheriff was called to the place because six bodies had been found in the house, Rick and Josie and of the four delinquents. The criminals had been found in a pool of blood and horribly mutilated. Clayford thought that the only explanation was that a possible fifth member of the gang had gone mad for some reason and had killed everyone else. Clayford began to work on the case and meanwhile time passed and we see the Anderson house is abandoned and we see the scarecrow guarding a land without a master even though the wheat continued to grow tall and luxuriant.
One evening we see a group of friends from a baseball team returning home in a furgoncinoc after winning a tournament. The driver, Jackson Finn (Justin Prentice) stops because he has to pee right near the Anderson house. The group, composed also of girls, girlfriends or girlfriends of the players meanwhile goes down to smoke or take selfies in sexy poses. Among these we find Vanessa (Samara Weav) avowedly bisexual, and Jenny (Bella Thorne) Jackson's girlfriend. On the sidelines were Grace (Naomi Scott) and her cousin, the introverted Lisa (Florence Pugh) who had been persuaded to attend the tournament by Grace herself as her parents had recently died in an accident. Then there were Simon (Logan Lerman) who seems to have a crush on Lisa and Mark (Lewis Pullman) who is considered a bit of a funny guy. After making a bit of revelry, Mark sees something in the field, he was the scarecrow. The whole group gets closer ... some like Vanessa and Grace find it disgusting while others like Jackson and Mark find it funny and start mocking him and playing with it. For example, Mark takes the hat and begins to be an idiot. Suddenly Jenny sees that red button that shines from one eye and since it was disturbing, she asks her boyfriend to do something. Jackson at this point uproots the scarecrow from the support and throws it on the ground and the button comes off rolling into the ground and the boy kicks the scarecrow. At the same time a gust of wind blows off the hat from Mark's head and Lisa feels a strange sensation. The girl, with kindness, says to leave the puppet alone and to leave but is treated badly by Jenny and Jackson. At this point Simon also intervenes defending Lisa while being mocked by Vanessa while she amuses the scene while smoking a cigarette. Suddenly Grace intervenes telling everyone to stop being idiots and point to the scarecrow saying to have seen him move. Jackson says it is impossible and at most it may have been the wind and he gives him another kick and with the cigarette and the lighter sets fire to him saying that it is disturbing with Mark's help. Meanwhile, Vanessa picks up the shiny button from the ground to watch it and Grace, Lisa and Simon set off for the van. Soon the others also arrive. Jackson sets the van in motion but a few seconds later it turns off without starting again. It was night and not knowing what to do they went back and settled in the uninhabited house while the next day they would go for help in some way. Jackson and Jenny started frolicking outside in the middle of a bunch of weeds, Mark went out into the garden to smoke a cane while the others started playing cards taking advantage of the light of some candles that were lit, at that quiet moment even Vanessa seemed nice in the eyes of Lisa who usually had an annoying attitude, especially when she was in the company of Jackson and Jenny. At this moment, Mark feels something behind him and quickly escape near the corn. Mark, intrigued and a little stoned, approaches and goes into the field a little, shining light on his cell phone, but realizes that it was a red cat. At that moment he realizes he is near where the scarecrow had previously been burned. Mark, however, realizes that there was nothing left at that point, only a trail of ash coming out of the right side of the cornfield. As he thoughtfully started toward the house another rustling sound caught his eye and he found the red cat he had seen previously dead and picked it up. At that moment he hears Jackson calling out his girlfriend's name aloud and shortly after he comes to him while the others arrive a few seconds later. Jackson says that after sex she had gone for a walk and now she can't find him anymore. Mark tries to calm his friend and Grace and Vanessa ask him what he is doing with a dead cat in his hand while Lisa approaches him and gets notices that the cat has a torn left eye. At that moment, Jenny's body fell from the roof of the house leaving all the boys stunned and terrified. Jackson approaches her and trembles as he embraces her. Jenny's face is mutilated and without a left eye. Meanwhile another gust reached the boys and a disturbing whisper could be heard in the air and everyone ran away inside the house and locked themselves inside. At this point we see the bloody hands that beat on a window, not even the time to react that a black figure takes the girl by the head and throws her away. The four survivors frantically try to bar the windows and every entrance with wooden planks and objects found here and there while the dark figure tries to enter until everything becomes silent. After having breathed a sigh of relief they try to understand what to do. Mark is very scared and is panicking and receiving a slap from Jackson. Grace doesn't know what to do while Lisa tries to reassure her fellow adventurers. Grace begins to smell an acrid smell coming from upstairs and then they see smoke. The group goes upstairs and they realize that there is a fire and try to stop with blankets without much success. Suddenly the black figure appears before them through the flames. The four are terrified to see that their attacker is the scarecrow that was in the field. Mark,Simon and Jackson, in the smoke, try to fight the attacker and order the two girls to escape. Jackson is immediately thrown down the stairs landing right in front of Grace and Lisa. Mark instead is taken with force by the head and shaken with power until killing him. The two girls help Jackson and Mark to get up, break the door and leave while the house begins to be devoured by flames. In front of the entrance they find Vanessa's impaled body and it too has no left eye. Lisa realizes that the red button that was used as an eye in the scarecrow could be useful for something. Lisa remembers that the last time she saw him, she was holding Vanessa in her hands while they were playing cards and fiddling with it. Grace looks into Vanessa's battered body but is not there and therefore Lisa enters the burning house to take the button.Lisa breaks a piece of shirt and uses it to cover her mouth and enters the house, finds the button and runs out. Grace asks if she saw a creature and Lisa says she didn't see anything. Lisa begins to rant and then call the scarecrow showing the bright red sky button to the sky. At that moment the puppet breaks through the window and hits Jackson in the back and then looking at the two girls he takes his left eye out and the boy falls to the ground dead. At that moment, Simon pounced on the scarecrow, taking advantage of the moment in which he is killing Jackson but is seized by the neck and turned up. Grace takes a chair and hits him while her is thrown far into the cornfield. Simon manages to stop the scarecrow from behind for a moment and tells Lisa to take the gallows and stick even if he does it too. Lisa, with a moment of hesitation, takes the run-up angrily and impales the two in the tool house and then hits the scarecrow's head with a shovel that breaks away from the body and rolls it on the ground and then throws it in the fire with the hope of killing the creature. He approaches Simon who is injured and sees Grace coming up limping while hearing the police siren coming to the farm because she was attracted by the fire. The film ends with the red button that starts to shine more and more and that a new head is slowly growing back in the scarecrow.
