Reaction: Even despite its lower budget, Last Days of the American Cowboy still couldn't manage to hit its break even point. Holbrook and Keough aren't exactly headliner names, but we were still expecting this one to be closer to profitable than it wound up.

"Despite previous admiration for the director's work, I found their approach in this instance less enticing. The actors' performances, characterized by a form of stoicism rooted in their dialogue and actions, unfortunately failed to captivate my interest. It's regrettable to report that the story lacked the necessary elements." - Brianna Stratton, Wyoming Tribune Eagle

"While Sammy-Jo Ellis's intentions behind this film are admirable, I must confess that I struggled to connect with any of the characters or the narrative, which teetered on the edge of self-indulgence. As the film progressed towards its climax, it became increasingly overbearing. Despite this, there were some elements that managed to hold my interest, although they were not enough to fully redeem the film."- David Knight, Toronto Star

"Clearly the hearts of writer Sammy-Jo Ellis and director Pablo Larrain are in the right place here. Last Days of the American Cowboy features a strong lead performance from the talented Boyd Holbrook, but manages to mostly waste it on repetitive sequences that seem to reiterate the same information over and over again instead of furthering the story (what little there is). Riley Keough, who I usually like, comes across as mildly annoying in this one. I like the themes and the message of Last Days of the American Cowboy, but I feel like the point was complete a half hour into the story and just kept beating the same drum over and over again." - Cal Crowe, Washington Globe

Rated PG-13 for some thematic material and brief sensuality
