Welcome the 32nd Golden Reel Awards ceremony! Tonight we will be celebrating the best Last Resort Films released in Season 32. Eighteen of the season's 30 films are vying for the 14 prestigious awards on the line this evening. The nominees this season are led by the duo of The Vintner and Escape, with nine and eight nominations, respectively - nearly doubling the nominations of the next batch of films.
AND NOW FOR THE AWARDS....
Scarlet won this same award back in Season 25, so it is only fitting that its sequel won the same award seven seasons later. It is also the fifth Roy Horne-penned film to win this particular trophy. Every film nominated in this category have further nominations set for later in the ceremony, so we may be calling their names eventually.
Make it two consecutive Best Soundtrack GRA victories for writer Diane Esposito, out of only three films on her resume. Esposito even managed to beat out frequent Best Soundtrack winner Roy Horne, who already has won the award four times. Songbird is now the fourth musician biopic to win Best Soundtrack in the award's 28 season history. Like with the last category, every film nominated here has at least one more chance for GRA gold.
For the last two seasons, the studio's Marvel Universe and DC Comics Universe were tied nine Most Wanted Sequel trophies. Now, with this win the Marvel Universe has pulled ahead with its 10th GRA trophy in the category. This is just the second Most Wanted Sequel trophy with Mark Newton's name on it, while D.R. Cobb is now the winner of five trophies in the category. The night is over for Red Lantern Corps, with his category being its only nomination. The other three films can still fight for gold.
The Avengers becomes the first film to win multiple awards tonight - doing so before the leading nominated films - The Vintner and Escape - manage a single victory. The Avengers also becomes the third superhero film in a row to win the Best Ensemble Cast trophy - following Justice League Invasion and Justice League War.
The Vintner is finally on the board, winning in its third chance tonight. The film still has a whopping six nominations remaining in the ceremony, so we could be calling its name plenty more. This is the first GRA victory for star Walton Goggins outside of the Best Ensemble Cast category, and the second for Viggo Mortensen, who previously won Best Villain for Batman: In the Shadows. Additionally, this marks the fourth Best Starring Couple trophy for writer Dwight Gallo - his first win since Season 18. The night is over for The Brothers Kendrick, striking out in its two chances. On Life and Living and Joker vs. Deadshot each have one more chance to win tonight.
Phantasm: Awakening manages to win the gold in its final category of the night with the Best Villain GA victory for Christopher Heyerdahl - his first GRA win coming with his first nomination. Three of the last five Best Villain winner have come from Horror films - a trend worth keeping an eye on in the future. Bigfoot will go home empty-handed tonight, failing to win in its only nominated category. Scarlet Witch, meanwhile, managed to go 1-for-3 on the ceremony, winning in the opening category.
Monopoly is now on the board after missing out in its first two chances of the night. This was the final nomination for the film, but at least it won't be passing go empty-handed. Through seven categories there have now been six different films to come out victorious. Joker vs. Deadshot will go home empty-handed tonight despite its high critical marks.
The Vintner wins its second trophy of the night, joining The Avengers as a multi-GRA winner. This marks the fourth Best Original Story victory for writer Dwight Gallo - including the very first trophy in the category all the way back in Season 2. While winless in its two chances so far, Escape still has six nominations across the final six categories - The Vintner has five more nominations itself over the rest of the ceremony.
And just like that, Escape is on the board, finally managing to best The Vintner in a category. This is Jade Pettyjohn's first GRA win - she has no previous GRA nominations before this season. Sins of the Father and Love Death Revolution make quick exits tonight, going home winless in their only nominated category. Both Escape and The Vintner both still have several more nominations tonight, so the award totals may come down to the wire.
What a night for Walton Goggins! He just won his second GRA trophy of the ceremony following his Best Starring Couple trophy - also for The Vintner. The Vintner has now taken the lead for trophies tonight, winning its third GRA. All three nominated films here still have shots at more gold, although while The Vintner and Escape have multiple chances, Amityville Horror is down to its last hope to avoid going home empty-handed.
This Best Actress victory is the first individual acting GRA trophy for Reese Witherspoon. Her only previous GRA win comes in the Best Ensemble Cast category for Season 7's Revolution. Escape has started to close the gap, winning its second award of the evening. Both Amityville Horror and Orange Blossom are going to head home winless tonight.
Viggo Mortensen matches his The Vintner co-star Walton Goggins, also winning a second award for the same role. This will be his third GRA victory overall. On Life and Living and Mr. Happy will be going home empty-handed for the ceremony, both striking out in their two chances. This the fourth GRA victory tonight for The Vintner. Now the best any challenging film can do is tie it for the most wins of the ceremony.
The Vintner has now won its fifth trophy tonight - ensuring that will end the ceremony with the most wins. David Fincher is still winless in the Best Director category despite this being his fourth nomination. Gareth Edwards was a first-time nominee here, while Sam Mendes won the award back in Season 17 (this was his fifth Best Director nomination). The night is over for The Ballad of Dwight Frye, failing to win in any of its four nominated categories.
The Vintner is the big winner of Season 32! The film was closed out the ceremony with six wins including the big one, Best Picture. The Vintner is the only film this season with more than two trophies. This is the fourth Best Picture victory for writer Dwight Gallo - his third in the last six seasons.
Congratulations to all the winners! That's a wrap on the 32nd season in the world of Last Resort Films. Stay tuned to the special GRA Edition of The Numbers on May 5th. That will be followed by Most Streamed on May 8th, Top 10 Surprises of Season 32 on May 11th, and this season's History Lesson on May 14th.
