Reaction: Certainly not the numbers we were hoping for or expecting. The foreign box office gross definitely well below our internal estimates, which hurt the film’s prospects. These numbers also call into question Armie Hammer’s ability to open a film outside of his Green Arrow character in the DC Comics Universe films, as his two non-DC films (this and The Squared Circle) have failed to break even at the box office (although Hammer was only a supporting character in The Squared Circle).
“The most shocking aspect of this story is that it is inspired by a true story. Hammer gives a strong, conflicted performance in the film that makes good use of his natural charisma and physicality. Iseman does her best in the other lead role, but with sharing all her scenes with Edie Falco and Hammer, she can’t help but seem a bit out of her league.” - Dave Cone, New York Post
“These social media and phone heavy films come off cold to me. The bulk of the interaction between the two leads in done through technology. With that so much of a focus in the film, I feel like we didn’t get to learn as much about the characters as I would have liked.” - Allen Poole, AV Club
“A Following is a tightly woven film with a story that unravels at a brisk pace. The quality of the writing is strong, but much of the plot of the film is hard to believe, even if it is based on actual events. I liked Hammer, Iseman and Falco in their roles, but Kirsten Dunst’s character came off as distracting.” - Jeremy Raren, RottenTomatoes.com
Rated R for language, sexuality and nudity
