The Roundup with Jeff Stockton (Season 13 Golden Reel Awards Edition)

Alrighty, folks. The nominees have been announced for the 13th Golden Reel Awards. For this awards-centric edition of The Roundup, I will go through each category and tell you who I think should win the award, who I think actually will win the award, and who I think has no chance to win - followed by a brief thought on the category this season.

BEST PRODUCTION DESIGN
Who Should Win: Blind Faith
Who Will Win: Elysian
No Chance: Accordion De Chanson

Thought(s): Blind Faith and Elysian were both beautifully designed films from an art perspective. Despite their genre differences, they have a lot in common, but I personally liked Blind Faith's look a little more.

BEST SOUNDTRACK

Who Should Win: Elysian
Who Will Win: Elysian
No Chance: Zoe Maye

Thought(s): I really enjoyed the soundtrack to Elysian. It added to the film and helped set up the tricky tone of the film. Meanwhile, I highly doubt any soundtrack featuring novelty group the Bloodhound Gang is ever going to take home a Best Soundtrack GRA.

MOST WANTED SEQUEL
Who Should Win: Hex
Who Will Win: Batman: Arkham
No Chance: Dragon Ball: The Wrath of the Demon King

Thought(s): All of the films in this category certainly deserve a sequel, and I imagine all of them will get one at some point. I have a hard time imagining a Batman film not winning in this category, even if Hex was my favorite film nominated in the category.

BEST ENSEMBLE CAST

Who Should Win: Teslin, Yukon
Who Will Win: Bright Neon Lights
No Chance: Batman: Arkham

Thought(s): Teslin, Yukon and Bright Neon Lights are all about the ensemble casts. I like that Teslin, Yukon didn't have any huge names to fall back on like BNL did. Meanwhile, as good as the cast was, this just doesn't feel like a Batman category to me.

BEST STARRING COUPLE
Who Should Win: Adrien Brody & Michael Stuhlbarg - Someone Else
Who Will Win: Alden Ehrenreich & Shailene Woodley - Elysian
No Chance: Armie Hammer & Madison Iseman - A Following

Thought(s): It's a pretty strong category this year. I think Brody and Stuhlbarg deserve it for Someone Else, but Elysian seems to have a lot of momentum heading into the ceremony, so I would put my money on Ehrenreich and Woodley taking home the trophy.

BEST VILLAIN
Who Should Win: Russell Crowe - Blind Faith
Who Will Win: Dan Stevens - Elysian
No Chance: Eric Bana - The Dark Tower: The Gunslinger

Thought(s): I don't think Bana had enough screen time in The Dark Tower to earn the trophy. Crowe is so great at playing a villain, and he gets to play a different kind in Blind Faith. I hope Crowe wins, but like I said before it seems like Elysian has the momentum right now.

BEST ADAPTATION
Who Should Win: The Crucible
Who Will Win: The Crucible
No Chance: Mass Effect 3 - Part 2

Thought(s): I really enjoyed Lon Charles' adaptation of The Crucible. He wasn't overly faithful to the source material, but kept all the important pieces intact while tweaking some important elements for dramatic effect. I liked Mass Effect 3 - Part 2 and can definitely respect the skill required to write the film, but I just can't picture it winning.

BEST ORIGINAL STORY
Who Should Win: Blind Faith
Who Will Win: Elysian
No Chance: But What Am I?

Thought(s): A lot of categories are going to come down to a coin toss for most voters between Blind Faith and Elysian it seems. I liked Blind Faith a tiny bit more (and I think it holds up over repeated viewings better than Elysian), but I won't be surprised if Elysian wins.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS
Who Should Win: Hailee Steinfeld - The Crucible
Who Will Win: Sarah Gadon - Blind Faith
No Chance: Rooney Mara - But What Am I?

Thought(s): Gadon has a really strong resume with LRF, so I think she may be rewarded for all her time on the Halo series with his award, but I think it should go to Hailee Steinfeld who played completely against type as a witchy villain.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR

Who Should Win: Lucas Hedges - Blind Faith
Who Will Win: Adrien Brody - Someone Else
No Chance: William Fichtner - Teslin, Yukon

Thought(s): I think Hedges deserves it since he really had the bulk of the heavy lifting in Blind Faith as what seemed like the lead role, but Brody was really good in Someone Else with the showier part of the lead duo, so I think he might take it.

BEST ACTRESS
Who Should Win: Rooney Mara - The Crucible
Who Will Win: Shailene Woodley - Elysian
No Chance: Charlize Theron - Genetic Descent

Thought(s): Woodley has momentum, but Mara was really good in The Crucible so I think she earned it. Despite a strong performance in Genetic Descent, Theron's chances for the award were definitely hurt by the film's lukewarm critical reception.

BEST ACTOR
Who Should Win: Casey Affleck - The Crucible
Who Will Win: Alden Ehrenreich - Elysian
No Chance: David Harbour - Teslin, Yukon

Thought(s): Essentially the same thing as the Best Actress category. I think Affleck earned it more, but think Ehrenreich will win it. Harbour didn't really stand out much to me in Teslin, Yukon, so I don't like his chances of winning this one.

BEST DIRECTOR
Who Should Win: Ari Aster - Blind Faith
Who Will Win: David Lowery - The Crucible
No Chance: Michel Gondry - But What Am I?

Thought(s): I think Aster's style suited Blind Faith better than just about any director on any film this season, so I think he should win. As far as who I think will win, I'm flipping a coin between Aster and Lowery on this one. Heads: Aster, Tails: Lowery. Tails, it is, so I'm picking Lowery for The Crucible here.

BEST PICTURE
Who Should Win: The Crucible
Who Will Win: Blind Faith OR Elysian
No Chance: Teslin, Yukon

Thought(s): The Crucible was my favorite film of the season, so I obviously think that's what should win, but I'm not delusional. Clearly this is a two film race between Blind Faith and Elysian, and I honestly don't know which way the voting will swing.
