Reaction: This sequel was obviously a lot bigger and more effects heavy than the first film. That means it cost a lot more, but it also means that it was easier to market resulting in bigger box office and bigger profits despite the higher budget.
"Scarlet Witch is a fun blend of supernatural horror and superhero spectacle, fusing Marvel mythology with a nightmarish aesthetic that feels closer to The Witch than Iron Man. Sadie Sink continues a potentially career-defining role as Wanda Maximoff, torn between destiny and self-destruction. With hypnotic visuals, a pulsating synth-infused score, and a rich narrative, Scarlet Witch aims to redefine what a comic book film can be." – Richard Lawson, Vanity Fair
"Dark and brooding, Scarlet Witch has Marvel leaning heavily into horror. Leigh Janiak as director uses the film to explore Wanda's trauma and powers with an electric Sadie Sink in the lead role. The Dream Dimension sequences are stunning. While the pacing isn't always on-point, Scarlet Witch manages to be an enthralling and visually daring chapter in the Marvel Universe evolution." - Justin Chang, Los Angeles Times
"Scarlet Witch is an ambitious (sometimes overly so) sequel to the more stripped-down first film. It does still maintain a deep reverence for Wanda's psychological turmoil, which Sadie Sink milks for another phenomenal performance. Andrew Lincoln and Jet Li provide some steady mentorship in the story, although the film is definitely still Wanda's story. There are some great Lovecraftian visuals filled with dread. The story does occasionally feel overstuffed with ideas, but its moody visuals, eerie synth-heavy soundtrack, and unpredictable twists more than compensate." - Dave Manning, Ridgefield Press
Rated R for intense sequences of supernatural horror, strong violence, and thematic elements
