More than ten years later, Julian (Garrett Hedlund) and his girlfriend Marylin (Daniella Pineda) are doing a bank robbery with Julian's brother, Max (Brenton Thwaites) and their accomplice Kurt (Jonathan Tucker), stealing about $ 500,000. Max, during the escape, was hit in the chest by a security guard in the fight and dies in the car due to the serious injury, while Julian and Marylin desperately try to save him; Kurt instead starts in a separate car with money, but stops along the way to their meeting point: an abandoned house in the woods. Kurt who looks violent and prone to madness and paranoia sees a couple of women who are putting gas in a gas station. Samantha Harrison (Samantha Morton) and her daughter Courtney (Florence Pugh) are talking about Courtney's poor results at school until they are approached by the man and blocked and abducted as hostages. The man's fury was triggered because Samantha, a former policewoman behavior of the strange behavior of the man had tried to call the police.

When they arrive at the pre-established house the two women are tied up and Kurt leaves much of the money in the van. Courtney, frightened but clever, manages to pass a piece of wood to her mother and is freed by her and manages to escape, stumbling into a large abandoned farm nearby. Kurt was in the van that counted the money and when Kurt makes the escape, it hits more Samantha times and runs to look for the girl. In an attempt to find her, Kurt searches for a free garage on the property before entering a house, which is in ruins and full of degraded furnishings. Inside, it is launched with a metal pulley and stabbed to death by an invisible assailant.

Meanwhile, after burying Max's body in a field, Julian and Marylin drive to the abandoned house to meet Kurt and share the money. Arriving at dusk, they find Samantha gagged, tied and sleeping on the floor while Kurt is nowhere to be seen. Julian takes his car to find Kurt, leaving Marylin alone in the house with the woman tied up. Shortly after Samantha wakes up and sees a man wearing the mask that Kurt wore during the robbery from the entrance, but can not warn Marylin with the mouth closed. Marylin who is in the bathroom washing her face is hit on the head by the masked man and dragged into the dining room where she is stabbed so many times to death. Meanwhile, while driving on back roads, Julian catches the attention of a police officer (Mike Colter) parked on a square that is eating a sandwich, and quickly withdraws to the house. Once inside, he finds the floor wet with blood and finds Samantha who has managed to free herself and hides in a closet. Julian questions the woman forcefully and Samantha tells him how she was kidnapped by Kurt and then that it felt like Kurt was coming home and kill Marylin.

Julian and Samantha leave on foot to find Courtney and stumble into the adjacent agricultural estate. While investigating the house, they find Courtney locked in a closet upstairs with Kurt's body. While Samantha separates Courtney's arms, the man in the sack mask attacks Julian and makes Samantha and Courtney unable. Samantha wakes up in the basement hanging from the ceiling. While the killer approaches her with a knife, he manages to pull down the metal pipes from the ceiling, freeing himself, and flees with Courtney. The murderer pursues them and Julian is left alone on the farm, where he discovers numerous bodies in various states of decomposition, and finds Marylin's body placed against a disposition of human and animal bones.

Samantha and Courtney return to the adjoining house to retrieve the van's keys. As they are about to leave, Samantha sees the killer coming towards the house, and the two retire to a bedroom upstairs to hide, but the killer finds them and attacks them. Julian arrives and shoots him, but does not die immediately. Samantha crashes a chair on the assassin's head, causing him to lose consciousness. Julian takes off his mask, revealing a young man with an ugly scar on his face; the killer is Martin Bristol (Justin Prentice), now grown. The three flee and the police officer arrives home just as Samantha and Courtney leave. Julian comes out of the house after holding a gun and the police officer after instructing the boy to throw the gun to the ground shoots him and kills him. When the policeman goes upstairs to check the house he finds nothing, it is clear that Martin Bristol's body has vanished.

The next morning, forensic investigators remove numerous bodies from the farm's properties and discover the diaries of the old serial killer that tell of the kidnapping of little Martin and the stories of how he turned himself into a killer. The magazines suggest that Martin, who gained strength when he became an adult, killed his kidnapper in the ways he was taught. That evening, Samantha prepares to go to bed; on the floor is the bag full of money that Kurt left in his van. While she and Courtney lie down to sleep, the closet door behind them opens.
