Reaction: Pretty strong numbers based on the medieval setting. Of course, the strong numbers may have something to do with the current star power of lead actor Tom Hardy. It adds to Hardy's very strong track record for the studio. Of the 11 films he's been in for the studio, only The Squared Circle failed to make a profit.

"While I did have some issues with the pacing and the lack of plot developments during certain stretches, when the film is working it really works. It features a colorful assortment of characters in a setting we really don't see much of these days." - Chris Mears, Slashfilm

"There's a ton of potential in this film, but the problem is that the potential apparently won't pay off until the eventual sequel. The whole film is building up to a tournament to crown a new king, but then ends before we ever get there. It's an incomplete film, something that is becoming more and more common in this franchise driven era." - Willa Pulaski, Salon.com

"Tom Hardy, as usual, oozes charisma in the lead role, that of a disinterested king. While he seems a bit young to already have grown weary of kingship, we buy it because of how much Hardy throws himself into the role." - Paul Landon, Film School Rejects

Rated PG-13 for violence
