Reaction: If the numbers for Beartown and Tenth Circle have taught us anything at the studio offices, it's that movies about sexual assault do no set the box office on fire. The two films, which deal in similar subject matter, have lost the studio a combined $37 million.

"Beartown is a decent small town drama with a wonderfully talented cast. Actors like Sam Rockwell and Malin Akerman were their usual reliable selves, but it was young actors like Carpenter, MacDougall and Pilon who really stepped up to the challenge and delivered strong turns." - Samuel O'Brien, Sight and Sound Magazine

"The film is strong on paper, but it end up being a pretty bland affair. The best actors in the film like Sam Rockwell and Domhnall Gleeson are kept away from the action for large chunks of the film, while we get to watch the younger forgettable characters and their soap opera-esque drama." - Sean Sullivan, Financial Times

"Beartown is by no means a terrible film. There is a good deal of conflict and tension in the story, but in the end it is really not a very memorable film, with no characters that particularly stand out." - Sean Williamson, Toronto Star

Rated R for language, violence and a scene depicting rape.
