Alrighty, folks. The nominees have been announced for the 14th Golden Reel Awards. For this awards-centric edition of The Roundup, I will go through each category and tell you who I think should win the award, who I think actually will win the award, and who I think has no chance to win - followed by a brief thought on the category this season.
BEST PRODUCTION DESIGN
Who Should Win: Silver Surfer: The Power Cosmic
Who Will Win: Silver Surfer: The Power Cosmic
No Chance: Superman: The Man of Tomorrow
Thought(s): The Silver Surfer sequel had an absolutely gorgeous production design, fully taking advantage of the film's cosmic setting. I would be shocked if it doesn't take home the trophy.
BEST SOUNDTRACK
Who Should Win: Y: The Last Man
Who Will Win: The Temptations
No Chance: The Devil's Passage
Thought(s): Y: The Last Man has a great soundtrack that perfectly compliments the tone and energy of the film, but The Temptations features a legendary music group's greatest hits, so I expect it to come out on top.
MOST WANTED SEQUEL
Who Should Win: Superman: The Man of Tomorrow
Who Will Win: Superman: The Man of Tomorrow
No Chance: Every other film
Thought(s): Superman: The Man of Tomorrow completely recreated the character for the LRF world. I doubt there is anyone who doesn't want to see where John Malone and Jeff Nichols take the characters in the future.
BEST ENSEMBLE CAST
Who Should Win: Born in Brooklyn
Who Will Win: Control
No Chance: Superman: The Man of Tomorrow
Thought(s): Control has a flashy cast of recognizable faces and big names, but I feel like the cast of Born in Brooklyn disappear into their roles with more ease and conviction.
BEST STARRING COUPLE
Who Should Win: Ben Affleck & Christina Hendricks - Born in Brooklyn
Who Will Win: Ben Affleck & Christina Hendricks - Born in Brooklyn
No Chance: Karen Gillan & Zach McGowan - Red Sonja
Thought(s): Affleck and Hendricks make for a completely believable Brooklyn couple, anchoring the film with their performance together. Gillan and McGowan were both really good in Red Sonja and had great chemistry together, but the genre of their film certainly hurts their chances here.
BEST VILLAIN
Who Should Win: Daniel Craig - Superman: The Man of Tomorrow
Who Will Win: Daniel Craig - Superman: The Man of Tomorrow
No Chance: Tim Roth - Walker
Thought(s): Daniel Craig is the perfect Lex Luthor. Finally one of DC Comics' greatest villains has a performance worthy of the character. I don't see anyone else having too much of a chance in this category.
BEST ADAPTATION
Who Should Win: Germinal
Who Will Win: The Stranger
No Chance: Y: The Last Man
Thought(s): This is an interesting category this season. We have two more classic literature adaptations up against two comic book blockbusters. Given that it is a "Part 1" film, I don't see Y: The Last Man standing much of a chance. I feel it will come down to the classical Germinal versus the dark comedy The Stranger. I think Germinal is the stronger film, but The Stranger will be fresher in the minds of the voters.
BEST ORIGINAL STORY
Who Should Win: Born in Brooklyn
Who Will Win: A Lost Sense of Heaven
No Chance: Walker
Thought(s): This was a real tough category this season. Born in Brooklyn was probably my favorite film of the season, so I definitely think it should win, but A Lost Sense of Heaven was probably my second favorite film of the season. It's going to be a close one, I imagine.
BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS
Who Should Win: Molly Parker - A Lost Sense of Heaven
Who Will Win: Molly Parker - A Lost Sense of Heaven
No Chance: Pretty sure every one else
Thought(s): Molly Parker was perfectly cast in A Lost Sense of Heaven. I'd really be surprised if she doesn't win. If she doesn't win, however, I wouldn't be very surprised if Frances McDormand steals the win.
BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR
Who Should Win: Thomas Haden Church - A Lost Sense of Heaven
Who Will Win: Thomas Haden Church - A Lost Sense of Heaven
No Chance: Billy Crudup & Wyatt Oleff - Born in Brooklyn
Thought(s): Like Parker, Church was pretty much perfectly cast in his role in A Lost Sense of Heaven. Helping his chances will be the two nominated supporting actors from Born in Brooklyn, Crudup and Oleff. I imagine they are going to split the votes of Born in Brooklyn fans, essentially knocking each other out of the race.
BEST ACTRESS
Who Should Win: Florence Pugh - A Lost Sense of Heaven
Who Will Win: Christina Hendricks - Born in Brooklyn
No Chance: Karen Gillan - Red Sonja
Thought(s): Christina Hendricks has a strong track record with the studio, so I'd bet my money on her winning the award. However, Florence Pugh gave the season's best leading performance by an actress, in my opinion, so I think she should win.
BEST ACTOR
Who Should Win: Stephen Dorff - Harrelson
Who Will Win: Jake Gyllenhaal - Control
No Chance: Robert Pattinson - Germinal
Thought(s): I'm still surprised that Ben Affleck and Kyle Chandler didn't secure nominations, but this season was an especially strong season performance wise. Of the nominees, I think Stephen Dorff's performance as Charles Harrelson was the strongest, but the voters like star power and Jake Gyllenhaal certainly has that. I feel that Germinal's lack of other acting nominations hurts Pattinson's (and Dorff's) chances. Only Bryan Cranston (7 Days), Christian Bale (Delaware) and Leonardo DiCaprio (Blackwater) have managed to win the Best Actor trophy for films that didn't receive any other acting nominations.
BEST DIRECTOR
Who Should Win: Denis Villeneuve - Control
Who Will Win: Lynne Ramsay - A Lost Sense of Heaven
No Chance: David Cronenberg - Walker
Thought(s): Of the nominees, Control was the most dependent on its director's signature style. The other films probably could've been directed by other filmmakers, but Control feels like it only could have been directed by Villeneuve. That said, I think Ramsay may end up pulling an upset and taking home the trophy instead.
BEST PICTURE
Who Should Win: Born in Brooklyn OR A Lost Sense of Heaven
Who Will Win: Control
No Chance: The Temptations
Thought(s): Control has a lot of momentum, so I would not be surprised it wins the big award, but Born in Brooklyn and A Lost Sense of Heaven were my two favorite films of the season, so I obviously think one of them should take home the trophy. Like Reuben Schwartz said, the nomination of The Temptations was a complete surprise which I can only chalk up to it ending up being the 5th film on a lot of voters' ballots.
