Reaction: The Dark Comedy genre has a pretty poor track record for the studio, and this film did little to change that trend. The Stranger is the 6th Dark Comedy film released by the studio, and only one of them has managed to turn a profit (Nevada, Iowa in Season 8). On the bright side, The Stranger staved off even greater losses thanks to strong home video sales figures.

“The Stranger is a film full of very dry, very absurdist humor. You’ll know if the film is for you pretty quickly. If you can get on board with that brand of humor, you enjoy this darkly comedic film.” - Bruce Vickers, Baltimore Sun

“Colin Farrel’s role in The Stranger definitely stretches his likability as a star - perhaps a bit too far. He gives a shockingly dry and dour performance in the lead role, giving an unlikable performance (although he gets his comeuppance in the end).”  - Stan Kyle, Omaha World-Herald

“The star/director/writer trio of Colin Farrell, Yorgos Lanthimos and Dominic Wilkins finally have reteamed after the critical success of their Season 7 film, The Death of the Honest Man. This project is not quite as mainstream as that previous film, but the three clearly understand how to work together at this point, creating a seamless black comedy.”  - Dave Cone, New York Post

Rated R for language, some graphic violent content, and sexuality/nudity.
