We are in a small ship where a female pilot of an advanced android form called SAM-104 (Tracy Spiradakos) approaches her captain, Mike Colby (O'Shea Jackson Jr.) who is inside a glass case in a form of hibernation stasis. The man slowly wakes up and SAM after handing a liquid to his captain who wakes him faster informs him that their ship is being chased and is about to be. Mike and SAM-104 manage to escape without too much trouble by firing missiles at the space pirates who attack them. The space pirate ship explodes and the two cheer. SAM and Mike are fighting five and the robot says it has received new orders from their company and will have to move to a planet called Xander to repair a security lab. Mike says he had heard of this planet before and thought it was uninhabited. After many hours of travel they land on planet Xander, a barren and deserted planet with two suns orbiting it.

The only sign of life on the planet appeared to be some kind of research center. They are greeted by Dr. Gordon Hauser (Justin Hartley) who shows up with a bandana on his forehead and Dr. Barbara Glaser (Maggie Grace) and Dr. Vivian Harden (Floriana Lima). The android SAM is temporarily disabled because the battery needs to be recharged. The three start talking until they eat a hot dish. Doctors explain that they conduct bacteriological genetic engineering experiments and have successfully created a new food source. On the one hand, Mike, who was a humble worker at the company, looked with admiration at the scientists, but he also knew that the company also had shady deals and hoped he wasn't the captain in one of them. Then Mike meets Tracy Baxter (Crystal Reed), another member of the team and starts flirting with her until they are interrupted by Dr. Hauser who sends them to find Jimmy Swift (Hunter Parrish) because he is expected in the lab. Meanwhile, Mike begins maintenance work on the equipment inside the building. Mike notices a series of horribly mutilated rabbit carcasses scattered across a lab floor and is about to vomit and is teased by Dr. Cal Timburgen (Garret Dillahunt), who is responsible for bacteriology inside the facility. Cal is seen with a handkerchief in his hand and often has coughing fits. Timburgen tells Mike that the damage was caused by an octopus-like creature called Subject-5. Timburgen goes on to say that this creature continually alters its genetic makeup by changing its shape at will. Mike, confused and scared, hopes to finish his job and leave those labs soon. At this point the camera shows Subject-5 inside one of the glass cages, at this moment the creature resembles a kind of pale pink cocoon.

It's dinner time and we see the various scientists talking to each other, especially Mike and Tracy. We also see two other scientists, Earl Richards (Daniel Sharman) and Brianna Beale (Tala Ashe), an extravagant couple who are also celebrating their wedding anniversary. Meanwhile, Jimmy is cleaning the lab and notices that the creature's breath in the cocoon increases and starts to get almost wet and informs his superiors. Gordon tells Jimmy on the intercom to inform him that the behavior is normal, but sends Tracy to safety. Suddenly a slimy black stain emerges from the cocoon, leaves the glass cage and pounces on Jimmy who was turned with his back to the cocoon. Meanwhile, in the dining room, scientists explain that their experiments involve a substance called Proto-B, whose genes are attached to a fast-growing alga. When Mike asks what was joined with Proto-B to create Subject-5, Barbara mentions a deceased crew member named Annie, but no one goes further with the speech. Suddenly they get Tracy's terrified call. Mike and the others run into the lab and find Jimmy's body with the brain missing as the heart seems to be beating again. As Cal carries the body to the infirmary, Barbara tries to reassure Tracy that she is almost in shock. At that moment we see Subject-5 returning to the cocoon inside the cage. Night comes and we see Mike walk into Dr. Glaser's room and have sex while Earl is looking through one of the security cameras. At one point he sees an alarm appear. The man takes the gun and decides to go check it out. Arrived in the corridor the lights go off and as soon as the torch turns on the creature jumps on him. Meanwhile, Cal begins to check out Jimmy's body by taking tissue and blood samples. At one point he injects a substance and shortly after, Jimmy's skin and muscles quickly turn into a jelly-like mass. The next morning we see Tracy inside some kind of Turkish bath while Mike looks a bit embarrassed. Suddenly the creature attacks them but they manage to escape. The two survivors catch up with the scientists and warn them that a creature wanders into the labs, though Subject-5 still appears to be locked in its cage. Tracy suggests she may have undergone cell division. At the same time in the laboratory, Cal and Barbara witness the splitting of the gelatinous mass in two. Mike announces that he, Gordon, Brianna, Vivian and SAM-104 will follow him out as soon as it is back in operation. The characters wear protective spacesuits and Gordon explains that they only have an hour before the atmosphere circulates nitrogen in the blood. Shortly thereafter, Brianna finds Earl's decaying corpse just outside the base, near the cocoon of the last mutant. The characters start shooting angrily at the cocoon but realize it is empty. Brianna sees the monster that has now transformed into a black creature with tentacles and a mouth with sharp teeth. The creature attacks people and eventually Vivian is caught with a tentacle and violently knocked to the ground, dying and poor Gordon is swallowed whole and the monster quickly disappears by turning around for a moment and entering the facility again. Meanwhile, Cal realizes that the creature is creating a permanent food supply by injecting the bodies of humans with Proto-B, causing them to divide and reproduce indefinitely. Gordon, deformed and nearly dead, stumbles across the room and falls to the floor. Cal explains that Gordon merged his cells with Proto-B, which was then used to fertilize an egg that was implanted in Annie's uterus. Subject 5 grew so quickly, however, that he killed her two weeks later. Meanwhile, Barbara tells Tracy that they need to communicate with the creature instead of attacking it. While the men discuss how to kill the mutant, the two women enter the control room. Realizing that the creature can understand this and is connected to the computer system, Barbara uses the keyboard to ask if she can live with humans. The creature looks condescending for a moment but suddenly Subject 5 will stab it with its tentacle. Tracy runs to tell the men that Barbara has been killed, and Mike and Brian follow her into the control room. SAM-104 reveals to all survivors that Cal has cancer; Cal injects his cancer cells into a sample of Gordon's mutant tissue. Then use the lasers to blow up the rest of the monster's food before joining Brian and Mike in the control room. The creature's cocoon emits a liquid on the control cards, which elect Brian. Cal tries to kill the creature, but a tentacle hits him in the head. Accompanied by SAM-104, Mike takes the injured doctor to another lab room, where Cal orders him to cut his liver tumor and feed it to the mutant. Tracy runs to Cal's room to get his stash of morphine. On the way back, the monster chases her through the corridors. Unable to wait for morphine, Mike performed the rudimentary surgery to remove the cancer. Just then, Tracy returns to the lab after being chased by the monster and gives the morphine to Cal. Just as Mike removes the large tumor on Cal's liver, Cal dies. Just then, the monster, Subject 5, bursts into the lab and attacks. Mike attempts to feed the monster the tumor without getting eaten, while SAM-104 shoots the monster with his ray gun without success. SAM-104 then takes a scalpel blade from a table and stabs the monster in the right eye, but the monster uses one of its tentacles to hit SAM-104 with such force that the robot is thrown into a wall and breaks in. more pieces. Just then, Mike manages to get the creature to eat the malignant tumor. The monster reacts quickly by vomiting violently and collapses to the ground. As the monster finally dies in a slow and clearly agonizing death, Mike and Tracy find themselves in the carnage, remembering their fellow crew members who died in the fight.

"While there are a few decent moments in Subject-5, it all feels too derivative of other, better sci-fi/horror films."
