Reaction: An animated film without characters (and voice actors) is a tricky thing in the modern marketplace, especially with domestic audiences. This clearly wasn't as big of an issue with overseas audiences where the film made the bulk of its revenue.
"Acapella is a noteworthy storytelling experiment in animated film history. But I cannot say it is a necessarily successful one. By solely relying on animated actions and background music to tell its story, the film struggles to develop its characters and plot beyond the surface. And boy, if you are not fan of acapella music, this film may be a tough one to sit through." - Dave Manning, Ridgefield Press
"The movie presents an intriguing premise that almost achieves classic status but falls short due to its limited soundtrack and reliance on gimmicks. While Pete Doctor's animation expertise is masterfully evident, something I couldn't put my finger on makes me feel it's held back from reaching its full potential." - Rebecca Barazotto, Wired.com
"Acapella presents an ambitious concept of storytelling without dialogue and you have to applaud Jacob Jones and Pete Docter for their braveness. While the animation is visually appealing, the lack of dialogue makes it difficult to fully engage with the characters and their emotions. The film's reliance on a soundtrack to convey the narrative feels forced at times. I still think the concept of the movie makes it an interesting viewing experience and I can only support the originality of the movie." - Clark Chase, Chicago Sun-Times
Rated PG for some thematic elements
