Reaction: So close to making a profit. The salaries of some of the supporting cast of Runaway may have added to much to the budget, but at the same time, actors like Swank, Hawke and Sarandon, very well may have brought fans into the theaters. Dramas are generally just pretty hit-or-miss, and this one just missed.
"This film really hinges on how much you enjoy Haley Lu Richardson's performance. She may not quite be at the necessary level to pull off all of the scenes in this film, but she does her best, and is successful for the most part. It also doesn't hurt that the film has someone like Caleb Landry Jones help anchor the film with another great performance." - Sean Williamson, Toronto Star
"Will we ever be done with movies about whiny teenage girls and their failed attempts at rebellion? There is some strong work here, especially with the supporting actors and the script, but with a main character as unlikable as Haley Lu Richardson's character here, it makes it hard to settle into the film." - Michael Van Patten, Slant Magazine
"Runaway fits right in with the trio of films from writer Mo Buck and director Jean-Marc Vallee. Like those films, Runaway can be relentlessly depressing at times, but the character work is so strong that it still makes for an enjoyable viewing." - Stephen Anderson, Entertainment Weekly
