Thanks to Uncharted 2 we finally have the first big hit of the season, but that's not all that's going on. Here's The Roundup....
3. Franchises
As has often been the case for Last Resort Films, they are once again reliant on the box office security of their major franchises - with Uncharted bailing this round out
2. The Queen of the Night
Joe Wright has always been known for his high attention to details as a director, and The Queen of the Night is no different. While I didn't always find the story entertaining, the film's details at least kept me involved.
1. Uncharted 2
The first blockbuster of the season. This film is on-par with the first Uncharted, and by that I mean it's a solid popcorn film that acts as a pleasant way to spend a couple hours. It is a film that does what it sets out to do in an expert fashion thanks to confident direction from Brad Peyton and enjoyable performances from Ryan Reynolds, Brie Larson and company.
3. Emma Watson
She's pretty and likable enough, but I honestly just don't buy Emma Watson as a leading actress - a movie star if you will. She lacks that "It" factor and always seems to be putting forth a lot of (too much) effort and appears to be acting in most scenes.
2. Life of a Champion Part 2
It was hard to find someone to root for in this one. I guess the Lucas Hedges character is the only somewhat likable one, but he is not the protagonist and his goals have little impact on the plot itself. Instead we are forced to endure another 100 minutes with Dane DeHaan's insufferable character from the first film. I can safely say that nobody left the theater after watching the first film wondering that character's backstory.
1. Alex Conn
Alex, do you really think the problem with Hippies in New York is simply that the critics didn't like it? Way to try to belittle an entire profession. Anything to make yourself feel better, eh? Blame everyone else all you want, but that won't make it a better movie. The characters were whiny and one-note, the climax was stolen from other movies, and the flash-forward ending came out of the blue. You talk about the politics of the film, but they are really only prevalent in that final scene.
