Welcome to the Season 18 Golden Reel Awards, celebrating the best Last Resort Films releases of the studio's 18th season. Tonight there are 16 different films vying for the 14 prestigious awards on the line this evening. The nominees are led by Caesar with a record-tying 10 nominations. Hot on its heels though are the two dueling Dwight Gallo-penned films, Cocaine Cowboys and The Punisher, with 9 nominations a piece.
AND NOW FOR THE AWARDS....
AND THE AWARD GOES TO....
Sleeping Beauties takes home the first award of the evening. The Journey and Recursion are now done for the evening as Best Production Design were their only nominations. Sleeping Beauties can go 2-for-2 if it wins the always coveted Best Adaptation trophy. The Youngest Hart still has a chance to take home some hardware with its nomination for Reese Witherspoon in the Best Villain category.
AND THE AWARD GOES TO....
In its first of 9 nominations on the night, The Punisher takes home the GRA for Best Soundtrack. The soul and R&B-centric soundtrack becomes the first victory in the category for a Dwight Gallo-written film.
AND THE AWARD GOES TO....
Make that 2-for-2 for The Punisher, winning Most Wanted Sequel hot on the tails of winning Best Soundtrack. It becomes the first R-Rated film to ever win the award, and the 4th consecutive victory for an LRF Marvel Universe production.
AND THE AWARD GOES....
Lowell wins its first award of the night in its first nominated category. It is nominated for 6 more categories, including Best Picture. It is the third consecutive season that the Best Ensemble GRA has been awarded to a film co-written by John Malone and Jimmy Ellis (following Bunker 17 and Pulp). This category broke The Punisher's award streak, and puts the nights top nominee, Caesar, at 0-for-2 in its categories.
AND THE AWARD GOES TO....
Cocaine Cowboys finally makes it on to the board with its first victory of the night. The win for Caleb Landry Jones and Mark Wahlberg becomes one of the rare instances of the award going to actors not nominated for an individual acting award. The last time that happened was at the Season 9 GRA ceremony where Donald Glover and Sofia Boutella won for their work on Alex & Ada. Meanwhile, Caesar is now 0-for-3 on the night.
AND THE AWARD GOES TO....
Make it two in a row for Cocaine Cowboys. Salma Hayek takes home the GRA for Best Villain for her performance as drug lord Griselda Blanco, marking the first time the award has ever been won by a woman. Hayek's performance in the film is also nominated in the Best Supporting Actress category.
AND THE AWARD GOES TO....
This marks the third win on the evening for Cocaine Cowboys, with nominations remaining in 3 more categories, including Best Picture. This is the first Best Adaptation win for writer Dwight Gallo. He has 7 previous nominations in the category, along with 3 wins in the Best Original Story category.
AND THE AWARD GOES TO....
Caesar finally wins one after missing out in the first three categories it was nominated in. The film has six more chances to win tonight. Writers John Malone and Chad Taylor previously teamed up to win the award back in Season 8 for Scion. Combined, they have 8 total wins for Best Original Story.
AND THE AWARD GOES TO....
Jodie Foster takes home the Best Supporting Actress GRA after missing out on the Best Villain award earlier in the ceremony. It is Jodie Foster's first GRA win, with this season being the first time she's been nominated. This is the 3rd trophy for The Punisher after previously winning for Best Soundtrack and Most Wanted Sequel. It still has 3 nominations left: Mel Gibson for Best Actor, S. Craig Zahler for Best Director, and Best Picture.
AND THE AWARD GOES TO....
Manuel Garcia-Rulfo wins the award for his first LRF appearance. The trophy also gives Cocaine Cowboys a ceremony-leading 4 GRA victories. It can bring that total up to 6 with wins in the Best Director and Best Picture categories. The nominations leader, Caesar, now has just 1 win in 6 categories so far.
AND THE AWARD GOES TO....
Dakota Johnson wins her first Best Actress GRA in her first solo acting nomination. She has prior nominations for Best Starring Couple (with Aidan Turner for Superman: The Man of Tomorrow) and Best Ensemble Cast (Outlaw Country and Superman: The Man of Tomorrow). It will also be the lone win for Lock Every Door as it has no more nominations on the night.
AND THE AWARD GOES TO....
Leonardo DiCaprio wins his 3rd Best Actor GRA, winning for each LRF performance he has made (previously winning in Season 2 for Blackwater and Season 9 for Calamity). It is just the second GRA on the night for Caesar, which came into the ceremony with a record-tying 10 nominations.
AND THE AWARD GOES TO....
That makes two in a row for Caesar, bringing its total trophies up to 3 for the ceremony. Christopher Nolan wins his 2nd Best Director GRA after previously winning for The Prisoner in Season 3. Caesar still has a chance to tie Cocaine Cowboys for the most wins on the night if it can take home the Best Picture trophy.
AND THE AWARD GOES TO....
Caesar takes home Best Picture, its 4th GRA on the ceremony (out of 10 nominations). The film's writers, John Malone and Chad Taylor, have now combined to win 8 Best Picture trophies.
Congratulations to all of the winners! That's a wrap on the 18th season in the world of Last Resort Films and Hollywood Movie Studio. LRF will return for its 19th season on April 10th with the 3nd LRF Comic-Con! In the meantime, stay tuned for a special GRA-edition of The Numbers on Monday.
