The Roundup with Jeff Stockton (Season 18 Golden Reel Awards Edition)

Boy, did I call that one. The nominees have been announced for the 18th Golden Reel Awards, and they're dominated by a few films - just as I suspected. For this awards-centric edition of The Roundup, I will go through each category and tell you who I think should win the award, who I think actually will win the award, and who I think has no chance to win - followed by a brief thought on the category this season.

BEST PRODUCTION DESIGN
Who Should Win: The Youngest Hart
Who Will Win: Sleeping Beauties
No Chance: Recursion

Thought(s): All of the posters in the category are strong, but Recursion feels a little less original than the others which will hurt its chances. The poster for The Youngest Hart really captures the story, while also being visually interesting, so I think it should win. Sleeping Beauties has a few nominations, but I am not sure it will win any, so it could get a booby prize here.

BEST SOUNDTRACK

Who Should Win: The Punisher
Who Will Win: The Punisher or Worried Mind
No Chance: Lock Every Door

Thought(s): This season we have three outstanding nominees here: Cocaine Cowboys, The Punisher and Worried Mind. The Punisher was my favorite soundtrack of the season though. It felt so unique to the comic-book genre/world. It was a huge departure from the hard rock that usually accompanies the character on-screen, so Dwight Gallo showed some gumption filling the film with old soul and R&B songs - but I loved it! Worried Mind has a chance here though based on the musical pedigree of its subject matter.

MOST WANTED SEQUEL
Who Should Win: Caesar or The Punisher
Who Will Win: The Black Cat or Teen Titans
No Chance: N/A

Thought(s): Every film here has a shot. I'd like it to go to one of the more serious films, Caesar or The Punisher, but people love their big budget franchises in this category so it will probably end up going to The Black Cat or Teen Titans.

BEST ENSEMBLE CAST

Who Should Win: Cocaine Cowboys
Who Will Win: Caesar
No Chance: The Punisher

Thought(s): I would love to see Cocaine Cowboys win this one. Of the nominees, it and Lowell are the closest to true ensemble films with multiple story lines going on. The Punisher is going to be remembered mostly for Gibson and Foster, so I think the rest of the ensemble may be forgotten by the voters.

BEST STARRING COUPLE
Who Should Win: Caleb Landry Jones & Mark Wahlberg - Cocaine Cowboys
Who Will Win: Russell Crowe & Leonardo DiCaprio - Caesar
No Chance: Lily James & Robert Pattinson - Worried Mind

Thought(s): I loved the 1-2 punch of Landry Jones and Wahlberg in Cocaine Cowboys. They gave the film some levity with their interactions, plus they both gave some of the better performances of their careers in the film. I would never bet against a Crowe/DiCaprio combo here though.

BEST VILLAIN
Who Should Win: Jodie Foster - The Punisher OR Salma Hayek - The Punisher
Who Will Win: Jodie Foster - The Punisher OR Salma Hayek - The Punisher
No Chance: Reese Witherspoon - The Youngest Hart

Thought(s): This is definitely a two lady race between Foster and Hayek as their respective crime bosses. It's going to be a close one and they both deserve it. Witherspoon is a surprise nomination here.

BEST ADAPTATION
Who Should Win: The Punisher
Who Will Win: Cocaine Cowboys
No Chance: Any film not written by Dwight Gallo

Thought(s): Best Adaptation this season really boils down to Dwight Gallo vs. Dwight Gallo. Which of his Season 18 master works will take home the trophy? I THINK Cocaine Cowboys will win since The Punisher has its comic book origins working against it a bit here, while at the same time Cocaine Cowboys can pull out the true story card.

BEST ORIGINAL STORY
Who Should Win: Caesar
Who Will Win: Caesar
No Chance: Every film not set during Ancient Rome

Thought(s): It's gotta be Caesar, right? I don't see the other nominees toppling that giant here.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS
Who Should Win: Salma Hayek - Cocaine Cowboys OR Jodie Foster - The Punisher
Who Will Win: Salma Hayek - Cocaine Cowboys OR Jodie Foster - The Punisher
No Chance: Olivia DeJonge - Caesar

Thought(s): No offense to Olivia DeJonge, but she doesn't stand a chance against the legends she's up against here. Like the Best Villain category, this one will come down to Foster and Hayek. I don't know though if one will take both awards or if the voters will split them.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR

Who Should Win: Manuel Garcia-Rulfo - Cocaine Cowboys
Who Will Win: Russell Crowe - Caesar
No Chance: Jeremy Irons - Caesar

Thought(s): Crowe has the star power and GRA pedigree, so I'd bet he'll win. However, I truly believe the award should go to Manuel Garcia-Rulfo for his performance as the charismatic and ruthless (to a point) hitman in Cocaine Cowboys. It is such a unique character and Garcia-Rulfo absolutely nails it.

BEST ACTRESS
Who Should Win: Dakota Johnson - Lock Every Door
Who Will Win: Dakota Johnson - Lock Every Door
No Chance: Sadie Sink - Tumor

Thought(s): I think this is Dakota Johnson's award to lose here. I could be surprised here though. The only one I can't picture winning is Sadie Sink, the rest all have a shot.

BEST ACTOR
Who Should Win: Mel Gibson - The Punisher
Who Will Win: Leonardo DiCaprio - Caesar
No Chance: Lakeith Stanfield - Drawing Dion

Thought(s): Talk about a tough one to predict. I would love to see Gibson win it, but I wouldn't bet against DiCaprio going 3-for-3 with another Best Actor win. Stanfield probably has next to no shot.

BEST DIRECTOR
Who Should Win: Michael Bay - Cocaine Cowboys
Who Will Win: Christopher Nolan - Caesar
No Chance: Ben Affleck - Lowell

Thought(s): I really want Bay to win to stick it to the critics and audience members (like Alex Conn and H.G. Hansen) who doubted his skills behind the camera and questioned why he was given the job.

BEST PICTURE
Who Should Win: The Punisher or Cocaine Cowboys
Who Will Win: Caesar
No Chance: Lowell

Thought(s): I've made no secret of Gallo's films being my two favorites this season, but at the end of the day, Caesar has so much going in its favor for this award that it would be hard to vote against.
