Welcome back for another edition of A Second Look with Jeff Stockton! In this segment I will take a "second look" at a past LRF release with a fresh set of eyes.
Animus was one of the early releases in the studio's third season and just the fourth film from writer Jack Ryder. The film did receive some pretty decent reviews at the time, but it was also a sizable bomb at the box office. My thoughts on it at the time was that it was a decent movie that missed out on being a truly good or great film due to some logic/plot holes.
Looking at Animus now, I am feeling I might have been a bit too friendly toward the film when it was first released. The cast struggles with their characters and they're all just so unlikable (and not particularly relatable either), making it a much more difficult film to sit through than I had remembered. That said, it still does have a strong premise and the writing itself is certainly not bad (logic/plot holes notwithstanding), but the characters and the casting really don't work at times.
Original Grade: B
New Grade: C+
