The Roundup with Jeff Stockton (Season 20 Round 6)

The streak of profitable films came to an end this round and Plastic Man finally got a sequel after 13 seasons. That and more in The Roundup....

3. Rest of the Season
Looking at the schedule for the rest of the season, I have to say I'm pretty excited about some of the upcoming projects. This season is clearly one that is a bit back-loaded as there are a few sure-fire hits and some interesting sounding potential awards contenders coming up pretty soon.

2. Glenn Howerton
I like seeing Howerton get another leading role as Plastic Man - even if it has been a long time since the first film. I was also excited to hear that he has a non-DC leading role for the studio next season. Could he follow Billy Magnussen and become the next DC Comics Universe star to break into the LRF A-List?

1. Plastic Man 2
While the actual plot of the film was not as strong or focused as the first Plastic Man film, I actually enjoyed the humor of this one a bit more. APJ clearly understands the characters and the film works best when they are interacting with each other. When it is time for action though, this one struggled a bit.
3. Box Office
So much for that string of profitable films. That came to a crashing halt due to the bombing of Strawberry High and Excellent Women. The next two films due out from the studio could be pretty risky propositions as well (although I bet Gears of War will make at least some money - not sure if it will be a mega-hit though). That said, the overall season box office is still looking decently thanks to hits like X-Men 2 and Risico.

2. Strawberry High
I couldn't figure out for the life of me who this film was designed for. My initial guess was 12-16 year old girls, but then the strange casting of the adults really threw me for a loop. The story itself wasn't terrible - although I'm definitely not in the target audience - as it was coherent and had character arcs. One piece of advice for the future, Jacob Jones - casting can affect the audience that the movie attracts which could be one of the issues with the box office here. The most famous actors were either wrestlers or known for horror projects and unlikely to attract the target audience of the project. The studio could probably explain it better, but I feel like that not only hurt the film itself, but most likely hurt its box office potential.

1. Excellent Women
This one was a big disappointment. The casting was flat-out bizarre given the story and setting - although I thought Amanda Seyfried did a good deal better in the lead role than some of the other critics thought. But outside of her and Hugh Dancy, it felt like random choices that didn't work. I also felt like the story itself was supposed to funny (in a low-key Coen Brothers way - like A Serious Man), but the filmmakers didn't seem to make those elements work.
