Plot: The planet Sera is the home world of humanity. After the decades longs Pendulum Wars, the Coalition of Ordered Governments (COG) officially took control of the majority of the planet's countries. Not long after, every major city on the planet was attacked by the Locust Horde - a subterranean race of reptilian humanoids - who emerged from tunnels under the planet's surface. This day is known as Emergence Day...

One year after the Locusts emerged and began slaughtering the people of Sera, COG Chairman Richard Prescott (Burn Gorman) summons scientist Dr. Adam Fenix (Bryan Brown) and Colonel Victor Hoffman (Ted Levine) to his office. Prescott wants to talk about the possibility of using a weapon designed by Adam - the Hammer of Dawn - to defeat the Locust Horde. Hoffman is in favor of the idea, but Adam tries to explain that it would absolutely destroy the majority of the planet's surface and all those living in those areas. Prescott informs them that the government has been developing a safe zone on the Jacinto Plateau that would be safe from such a blast. Adam says he refuses to allow them to use the Hammer of Dawn to level every major city on the planet, but Prescott says that it isn't up to him and he simply invited Adam to the meeting as a courtesy. Adam storms out of the meeting and returns to his laboratory in the city of Ephyra, which has not yet been overrun by the Locusts.

Prescott makes an announcement to all the people of Sera that they have three days to make their way to the Jacinto Safe Zone or else they risk certain death. COG soldier Dominic Santiago (Edgar Ramirez) tells his wife Maria (Martha Higareda) to leave with her parents to get to Jacinto as soon as possible. She asks what he's going to do, and he says he's going to go and kill some more Locusts. He gives her a kiss and urges her to pack her things quicker.

Marcus Fenix (Joel Edgerton) and Santiago are leading a group of COG soldiers - also known as Gears, trying to defend the city of Ephyra from an assault of Locusts. While they fire upon the Locust horde, one of the soldiers, Augustus Cole (Terry Crews), refers to their current battle as the "big one". The small unit makes their way into a COG military facility where they find a communications officer, Anya Stroud (Lili Simmons), still in the facility trying to soldiers out in the field. Fenix tells her that she needs to leave the area immediately and get on one of the next helicopters out of the area as the Locust have begun emerging from the underground subway tunnels. She doesn't want to leave as Gears out in the field still need communications support. Marcus picks up Anya and carries her out of the building. As soon as they make it outside, the building collapses from a Locust mortar.

The Gears are stationed at an old school in the city when Marcus Fenix receives a distress call from his father, Adam Fenix. Marcus chooses to abandon his post in an attempt to save his father. Dom follows him, but by the time they reach Adam's laboratory, they watch as a burning helicopter hits the building's tower causing the entire building to collapse. When they return to the post, they are chastised by Col. Hoffman for abandoning their post and disobeying the orders of their superiors. Marcus tries to explain that he was trying to rescue his father. Hoffman yells at Marcus that his father was useless and not worth any Gear resources to rescue. Marcus then punches Hoffman in the face.

Marcus is placed under arrest and court-martialed for cowardice and failure to obey orders. Initially he is sentenced to be executed, but Prescott steps in and personally persuades the judge to reconsider. Marcus is then sentenced to 40 years of imprisonment in the planet's toughest prison, Jacinto Maximum Security Prison. As Marcus is being escorted out of the court room, he sees Anya. She tells him that she will do everything she can to help him get out of prison. He asks why she would do that. She says that since he saved her life, she's going to try to return the favor.

Four years into his incarceration, Marcus has gained the respect of both prisoners and his guards with his toughness. After several prisoners see a bunch of spiders come into the facility through the toilets, Marcus quickly recognizes that they are actually baby Corpsers - spider-like creatures that have been harnessed by the Locust. Marcus grabs a pipe and begins crushing them to death. He then tells everyone to get ready as it means that the Locust will be in the prison very soon. Marcus informs the guards of the impending Locust attack and urges them to call it into COG control. The guards receive word over the radio that Hoffman and Prescott have ordered the prisoners released and conscripted. Marcus is locked into a cell during a fight with a Locust Drone - a large Locust foot soldier.

The guards lead the prisoners to the roof of the prison, unaware that Marcus is still trapped inside, to be rescued by helicopter by the Delta-One - consisting of squad leader Minh Young Kim (Daniel Dae Kim), commando Dominic Santiago, and riflemen Augustus Cole (Terry Crews) and Pvt. Anthony Carmine (Ben Schnetzer). They contact Mission Control to find out if they have everyone. Hoffman responds that they need to leave with who they have now and forget anyone else. Anya privately contacts Dom, informing him that Marcus is trapped in a cell inside still. Dom convinces Kim to give him five minutes to head inside and rescue his best friend Marcus. Kim agrees.

Dom exits the helicopter and shoots his way through the prison until he finds Marcus fending off a ton of baby Corpsers. Dom shoots off the cell's lock and hands Marcus his pistol. Together they shoot their way back out of the prison and make it back to the helicopter just before it takes off. As the helicopter flies away, the squad watches as the prison is completely overrun by Drones and Corpsers. Dom convinces Kim to take Marcus on since Prescott pardoned all the prisoners, which should reinstate Marcus' rank as sergeant. Kim agrees since they can use all the Locust-killing help they can get.

Once the prisoners are dropped off, Kim informs the unit that they are being called on to track down a missing unit, Alpha Squad, which was in possession of the Resonator, a device that has been created to map the Locust underground tunnel network out for a series of bombs. When Delta Squad arrives at Alpha's last known location, they quickly come under fire from Locust Drones. While pinned down, Anthony begins to panic when his gun jams. He leaves cover for a split second and is killed by a Locust sniper. Marcus charges out and kills the sniper along with several other Drones with a chainsaw bayonet attached to his gun. Cole and Dom follow the signal from the Resonator and find it, along with the lone surviving member of Alpha Squad, demolitions expert Damon Baird (Glen Powell). The team sets up the Resonator in a mine and activate it. While leaving the mine, Kim is killed by Locust General RAAM (Clancy Brown).

Dom contacts command and is patched through to Anya, who informs him that they do not have enough mapped information on the Resonator to program the Lightmass Bomb they plan to use to take out the tunnels. Dom informs her that Kim has been killed. She asks if she can speak to Marcus. Dom calls Marcus over and hands him the radio. Anya tells him that she's glad that he is out of prison. Marcus thanks her for trying to convince COG to go easy on him. Anya then informs Marcus that since he was pardoned by Prescott, Marcus as a sergeant is now the highest ranking member of Delta-One, making him the new squad leader. Marcus asks what they are supposed to do about the Resonator. Anya tells him that the squad either needs to take the device much deeper into the mines, or find a way to boost the device's signal.

Marcus gives the squad an update and asks for their thoughts on the current dilemma. Damon, despite still being a bit shook from the death of his entire squad, says that he thinks he can boost the signal of the Resonator. While Damon works on the Resonator, Marcus receives a call from Hoffman. He tells Marcus that he isn't happy with him running the unit, but they have a job to get done. Marcus bites his tongue and listens as Hoffman informs him that the Tyro Pillar - an armored freight train - is carrying the Lightmas Bomb toward them. They need to collect the tunnel data from the Resonator and rendezvous with the train as moves through the area - the train cannot stop. Marcus says he and his men need to hurry then. Just as Damon finishes boosting the Resonator signal, a 40-foot-tall creature called a Brumak, which is basically living tank, emerges from the tunnels. Marcus announces that they need to get out of the area of the mines and catch the train as it passes through a nearby train station. Marcus, Dom, Damon and Cole all sprint away from the Brumak, which is hot on their heels.

The Delta Squad makes it to the train station as the train is preparing to pass through. A group of Locust Drones attack the group as the train speeds past. Dom and Marcus make it onto the train, but Damon and Cole are held up fighting off the Locusts on the ground. The Locusts begin overrunning the train. Dom and Marcus battle their way through Locust Drones on the train to get to the front of the train where the Lightmass Bomb - which they need to connect with the Resonator data - is located. When they reach the front of the train they find General RAAM guarding the bomb. RAAM holds his ground as the two Gears advance on him firing with their rifles. RAAM shrouds himself in Kryll - a small flying creature - as a shield. Marcus throws a flash bang grenade in between them and RAAM. The flash of light and concussive sound causes the Kryll to scatter away from RAAM, allowing Dom to fire a grenade at RAAM's head, blowing it clean off his torso and killing RAAM. Marcus uploads the data into the Lightmass Bomb. After activating the bomb, Marcus and Dom climb to the top of the train. They then see a King Raven helicopter fly overhead. The helicopter is manned of Hoffman, with Damon and Cole onboard. They pull Dom and Marcus up into the helicopter. From the Raven, they all watch as the train follows the tracks down into the mines. The bomb then goes off in a giant blue burst of light.

Chairman Prescott announces to the people in the Jacinto safe zone that the Gears have been successful in destroying an important Locust stronghold and have eradicated almost all of the Kryll breeding grounds. The Raven takes Delta Squad to the safe zone. When Marcus steps off the helicopter he is immediately greeted by Anya, seeing her for the first time in four years. She gives him a kiss, which catches him by surprise. Dom looks through the crowd that has come to congratulate them until he finds his wife Maria. They embrace as the people of the Jacinto safe zone celebrate the successful mission around them.
